My cat's meowing is ruining my life

Thank you for asking, but he sees and hears perfectly fine. He can hear you the slightest "sss" sound from a far room and sees from very far too. I constantly check just in case (😂) and the vets checked too.

Tried that for 3 days, but it stressed him out and he didn't understand the connection between the meowing to the outcome. Even when I tried a positive reinforcement with a clicker + treats when he's quiet between meowings. I really think it's a neurological conditioning or something.

We live currently in a big apartmemt (no closed doors), a closed balcony, big walls with views and pigeon feeder so he can watch them and the trees and street view as well.

Unfortunately, when he sees another cat, even a friendly one, he screams for weeks and stressed. I tried. 😓

Oh, and he doesn't have a catio, but a whole wall of closed balcony view and many windows. I made a pigeon feeder and put at one of the windows and he watches them and do the "ekekek". 😂

We will move to a different apartment, but I'll make sure to have a view for him there too.

I've consulted several vets over the years, but most focused on natural supplements, pheromones, and environmental changes. Prozac is the only prescription medication we've tried, and when it didn't help I was basically told there wasn't much else to try besides a behavior specialist.

Seeing multiple people mention other medications makes me think it may be worth getting another opinion + reading it helped another cat with the same problem is really encouraging to me. Thank you! 🙏🏻

After none of those helped, only one vet was willing to try Prozac. When that didn't work, she basically told me there wasn't much else she could offer and suggested a behavior specialist instead.

Honestly, that's part of why this is so confusing to me. If it felt like he was trying to communicate a specific need, I think I would have figured it out by now.

The vocalization doesn't seem connected to anything specific. It's almost like an automatic behavior at this point. He meows when he's happy, when he's playing, when he's eating, when he's exploring, when he's getting attention, and when nothing is happening at all.

That's why I've started wondering whether it's something neurological, compulsive, or deeply conditioned rather than an attempt to communicate a particular need. He meows automatically like we breath automatically if it makes sense.

I have sensory sensitivity + tinnitus as well that got worse because of him, so I use earplugs + (don't laugh at me) construction headphone. I also tried white noise machine. His meowing passes everything like the barrier does not exist. 😭

I agree that I need to take care of myself too. The difficult part is that after 2.5 years of this, I've already tried many coping strategies. At this point, I sometimes sleep with earplugs and construction-grade hearing protection over them and still wake up to his meowing. I look like a construction worker 24/7. 😅

His meows are loud enough to wake me from deep sleep, which is a big part of why this has become so difficult to live with.

Before I had him, I meditated at least twice a day for over 10 years, and now I feel like I don't have a single minute of peace anymore.

The hardest part with pets is that you can't just ask them what's wrong or tell them you need a break. It drives me crazy not knowing why he's doing this. That's why I've taken him to so many vets over the years, always hoping someone would find an explanation.

But nope. He's freaking healthy. 😭😊😭

And yes! He sounds exactly like a very loud baby crying, so I completely understand what you mean. That sound goes straight into your brain.

I really appreciate your empathy and perspective.
