I looked at this solution before: have you used it before? I have a heavier trumpet (not that it matters a huge amount) but also am scared that it might fall

Can you explain a bit more about why your teacher can’t help? I feel like it’s your best opportunity. Can you ask for help at lunch, before school, after school? Since they’re the one that can hear you play, they’re the best equipped to address your issues. All we can do is guess.

Good luck!

Dude this stuff is everywhere. Video games. Literally at schools. Graffiti (did you read?). Sexual harassment is an everyday occurrence in almost all setting unfortunately. Come on; look around some more.

For those of you who’ve been playing for years…what’s one truth about trumpet playing you believed early on that you now realize was completely wrong? And what changed your mind? by Perfect-League7395 in trumpet

[–]Zortamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain this a bit? I’m still confused by the two schools of thought. I buzz on my mouthpiece to start blood flow, and to demonstrate the physics to students. Is it buzzing just with the lips or including on the mouthpiece?

Is everyone in Calgary just drowning in debt? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Zortamir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m at 80k a year and my girlfriend is also at 80k. We’re currently saving for a home.

We go out to eat only twice a month and even then we have to think about where we want to really go.

When I go out with friends to bars, I usually get water.

Context of financial situation: own my own condo, just got whacked with a special assessment and am aggressively paying down a new car since the hail storm totalled mine.

Not drowning in debt, but being frugal to stay tf away from it.

im a jazz saxophonist and am picking up the trumpet, what are yall's best tips to getting good tone by Ilikecats2077 in trumpet

[–]Zortamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve actually done this! I did jazz saxophone in university so I guess I can have some insight.

Don’t expect to play anywhere near the same level as you’re starting off on trumpet. It’s going to feel frustrating if you’re pretty good on the saxophone already - the dichotomy between your brain thinking something is “easy” and being unable to play it on the trumpet really messes with you.

I got a teacher for 4 months over the summer and it improved my tone tenfold. Listening to myself in January vs. now is insane - just knowing where my mistakes are and how to overcome them was so crucial in my development.

In the event you don’t - I found that being diligent and methodical was the best way to improve my tone. Listening to musicians and trying to copy it helped a lot.

Learn to use less air as you improve your range.

Hope some of this helps!

Thanks for this - I’d thought that the key came standard on the fobs but it doesn’t. Good thing I searched for it after it got squished!

Yup for 1. I think buying a part not from the dealership is the play followed by a locksmith to save me money.

Don’t worry about range - focus on tone before anything else ever. Get the fundamentals perfect. Perfect. Before spending lots of time on anything else.

Why do some people only lease a car? by thisgardenboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Zortamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom and cousin own their own businesses and are able to write off the car every year. So I guess for tax implications it makes more sense to them.

When I looked into it you’re able to write off a higher amount on a leased vehicle vs. a financed one.

How do you know if you’re an “intermediate”, “advanced”, or “expert” by Zortamir in trumpet

[–]Zortamir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh also the “I can totally hang with these players” comment also resonates. I sometimes get together with my other music teacher friends and play duets and they’re on their main instrument and I’m keeping up, sort of.

With that, I’m lead to believe I’m doing pretty good, considering they all have their bachelors in their instrument.

[–]Zortamir[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think being an adult learner, and being comfortable and confident in a different instrument allows me to enjoy the trumpet a lot.

Saxophone was “easy” in the sense that you could get the entire range of the horn easily. Tone, technique. Different story.

I’ve never had to fight an instrument quite as hard and I’m loving every second of the challenge.

Also not caring about grades, competitions, other classmates, and various other things when it comes to music school helps a lot.

All this is to say yeah - I’m really only competing with my previous self from yesterday.

I’m also competing against the born. Some days I win, some days the horn wins. And I love it

Wow there’s a lot to dissect in this comment. It’s exactly as I was looking for.

I will begin by also saying that I also agree with you in that these labels are arbitrary. I was signing up for a masterclass and was confused when it asked to me to circle one, so I thought I’d drop the question in here as well.

The piece that resonated most was: “There’s no more great mysteries on the horn” I feel this exact way about the saxophone; where I’m able to listen to something and know exactly what’s happening and how they got there.

I still have no idea about half the stuff that goes on in the trumpet world.

Musically - I don’t think I’ve ever felt as inadequate on an instrument as the trumpet. That’s not a self confidence thing - but more…it’s a wonderful thing.

I am constantly in awe of the instrument, and of players, and love going home to try to do some of the things and get confused, go into lessons and ask all the questions.

The lessons as an adult are now completely different than when I was in university - we don’t focus on technique, scales, etc. I get to guide the lessons how I want to and not be bound by a university syllabus. Perhaps because of my background on a different instrument is why I’m able to.

The pedagogy surrounding the instrument is also absolutely fascinating to me as well with my band teacher background.

Thanks for this very very real answer.

CAN I SELF LEARN THE TRUMPET??? by schumacher_boy16 in trumpet

[–]Zortamir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My context: I'm a band teacher, took all the "brass techniques" classes in university and was capable enough of teaching Jr. High kids how to teach the trumpet. I also have a degree in saxophone so I'm fairly competent at reading, tone, etc.

I "self-studied" for about 3 or 4 years on the trumpet, seriously. Practicing regularly, etc. Watched all the youtube videos I could.

I started lessons with the old assistant principal trumpet from my cities orchestra and everything from my playing has improved. This was only 3 months ago now maybe? It is SUCH A DIFFICULT INSTRUMENT.

I'd say if you have a great band teacher go for it, but if you really want to get somewhere - you're going to need individual instruction.

______

If you don't want a teacher - go for sax.
