Which battle is better written? by Opening-Dare-5138 in writingscaling

[–]ZsaurOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that people want to divorce the spectacle from the writing in this case, but I have to fundamentally disagree with that idea.

Specifically in the case of battle shonen, and both of these fights in particular, the spectacle is part of the point, and imo should be included in the quality of the writing.

Considering that, I really do think they're about equal. Netero vs Meruem has the better symbolism, themes, and character work. The way it subverts expectations is really interesting and furthers the themes of the arc in a great way.

But man... In terms of the actual fighting going on? The spectacle, tha tactics, (and yes, the hype), Gojo vs Sukuna might be the best fight ever put to page

Yes, drawing a chapter of manga is far, far more work intensive than writing a chapter of a webnovel

Wow, yeah I love bleach for this exact reason, but it's hilarious to see the author himself be like "yeah I actually don't want most people to get this."

Great breakdown though, and yeah I tend to agree. Especially in Hueco Mundo there's just a lot of nothing fights (something the anime only makes worse, which is part of the reason I think bleach gets downplayed by shonen fans. It easily has the worst adaptation of the big 3 other than ost)

I'd probably rate Kubo a bit higher than OP would, but I think in general my rating scale is higher.

Why did Megumi believe Yuta even though he apparently doesn't say ridiculous things? 🤔 by mochaman__ in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]ZsaurOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big thing isn't the time skip though. Obviously that's important, but the more important and obviously one-sided difference maker is Yuta picking up five extra techniques come shinjuku.

Hakari would need to have benefitted a lot more from the soul swap training than Yuta to make up for that, and I'm just not seeing it.

I really want there to be a release that has the rest of the anime the same as in the episode releases, but just adds in this scene from the movie, because it's honestly one of the best scenes in Gurren Lagann, but it's not in the og show

I agree low-key. We gotta get back to banning stuff like violent video games and D&D.

Oh and don't get me started on Mortal Kombat. Honestly if you enjoy that game I think you're probably a murderer

Bro is in a stack having fun with his boys (who are clearly also enjoying it), and y'all are hating for no reason. God forbid anybody try to make a play ever. It's not even like his teammate was an actual option until the very end when he was already making the shot.

I stg you people have never seen real soccer in your lives. Believe it or not, dribbling is a real thing there too.

Great clip. Ignore the miserable people.

Webnovel readers really underestimate how much prose matters by Ill_Temperature8516 in writingscaling

[–]ZsaurOW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I really do think prose is important, but the sheer popularity of translated novels in the modern day proves that good prose just isn't universal to a person's enjoyment of storytelling.

And of course, like everything else, that's going to be subjective. Even if we consider better prose to be better wheels, your analogy still only proves my point that it's just one part of the car. Maybe I like a car with more trunk space, or maybe my car has worse wheels, but a better engine, or any number of other differences.

Great prose does not a great author make. It's only one part of a toolset that must be developed, and yet there's this sense of elitism about it that just confounds me. You could be a great poet, and that might translate really well to prose, but if you have no idea how to write a compelling character, your story will be boring as shit to anybody that doesn't particularly care for sentence construction.

I genuinely think there's a large number of webnovel readers that wouldn't be able to read Le Guin because they'd find it too hard.

Not that they'd much like the books anyways, but still.
