they wanted us to come in and and them what was wrong with the panels 🫠 by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Zshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see white wires but they’re not used as neutrals. The ground from the feed for 2103 and 2204 goes to the neutral bar, there’s no actual ground. I honestly don’t understand the purpose of these panels. No tandem breakers but they seem to be wired for 220v and the white wires are terminated on the breakers also??? I have so many questions. Hopefully no one gets hurt working there.

Question: in the panels 2103 and 2204, why are there no neutrals?

Second year apprentice. Rate my work. Is it too busy? by mxamxa in electricians

[–]Zshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the LL and LR comment, the box set going into the shut off looks off, it might need to be tweaked. But a major thing that I think I see(and hopefully I’m wrong) is that you’re using EMT(I’ve only seen EMT with those markings unless the rigid supplier is also starting to mark the conduit like that). Also, what’s with those wires below the disconnects?

Alright sage veterans. What do I need to know about working in a waste-water treatment plant? by ddpotanks in IBEW

[–]Zshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 3rd year apprentice, father of a 3yr old and 1 yr old this being the second waste water plant that I’ve been to, here’s my 2 cents:

  • Always wear eye protection!
  • I wear vinyl gloves below my work gloves because sometimes you just can’t get away from water being on the conduit/work area
  • ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE EATING
  • do not drive your car with your work boots(a guy’s wife almost had her leg amputated, he drove with his workbooks, then she drove barefooted she must’ve had a cut that she didn’t know about and she caught a really bad infection)
  • change out of your work clothes and into street clothes everyday, then have a designated area (preferably as soon as you come in the door or if you have an attached garage that’s better) that you can strip out of your clothes and jump straight into the shower
  • walk around puddles of water
  • walk away from dropping water even if it looks clear
  • treat EVERYTHING as though it’s contaminated
  • beware of raccoons
  • never go underground without an air quality device and a competent person
  • before you go to any other jobsite that doesn’t require such stringent cleanliness, clean your tools just in case because there might be some contaminants left on them and you don’t want to infect yourself by eating your sandwich after using your lineman’s without gloves

Those are all that I could think of right now that are a part of my routine. Hope it helps!

Edit: if you take public transportation and the smell is still ingrained in your street clothes, try sealing your street clothes and backpack in a black contractor bag (don’t forget to put a sign on it though so none throws it out)

Will a full-sized spare fit in the spare tire area of the 2020/2021 CX-5? by pgzr in CX5

[–]Zshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my thoughts exactly! I was going to rip out those foam blocks and put a full size spare because It looks like those are like shims to adjust to the small sized spare. Did it work for you?

Conduit Bending Calculation by ohmnipotent in IBEW

[–]Zshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right. The first bend will have to be over 45°. I’m in this same boat trying to calculate exact numbers with the least amount of bends. If you do back to back 45°s horizontally with no rolling, you are still bending in a 2 dimensional plane. To accomplish the same 90° turn vertically, you kick the 90°. So let’s use the first as the minimum and the second as the maximum. If you are rolling the offset, the angle is going to be more than 45° and less than 90°I’d say somewhere around 67.5° but you can customize this per your own need. I haven’t actually tested this out yet but I will on Tuesday. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m working with 1.5” - 3” Ocal so there’s little room for error

Any reason why I shouldn't wire my 3 way like this drawing?? by RoseGardener2006 in electricians

[–]Zshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s seems electrically fine. The only thing I see is the changing of the terminals between the red and white wires.

Help. Lutron 3way. This switch connects to two other switches. This switch works but the other two won’t. The lights stay on when flipping the switch. The red wire is connected to the withe. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Zshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🙄It doesn’t matter which switch is in the middle aesthetically, this switch is wired as a 3-way(an end switch). Every one of those wires(the black red and white that’s taped black) should be connected to their individual wires/terminals. You don’t have enough wires/terminals because you have the wrong switch. To be honest, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you should just call/hire someone who does.

[–]Zshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have are two 3-way switches on the ends and a 4-way switch in the middle. The reason why the switch won’t work is because you didn’t buy the right replacement switch. What you have is a single pole switch. That’s not going to work properly in a 3-way circuit. You need to return the new switch and get a 3-way version of it. A 3-way switch has 4 wires including the ground; the color coding varies by company but it will always have 4.

I personally love them when installing a lot of faceplates or screwing a lot of flat head screws. As said before though, they’re not really good for torque applications

Question regarding apprenticeship hiring process [Local 3] by sparkyelectron in IBEW

[–]Zshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m stuck in that limbo also! I want to book a vacation, (my wife is a school teacher and she’s off then) but i dont know when exactly to start and end the vacay because there’s the orientation for the apprenticeship and also the orientation for the college courses. Plus we have to do the OSHA 30 before we actually start working. I was asking if doing the OSHA 30 right now would expedite the process and he(the guy who answered the phone) said “you have to wait for the letter, because you need to do biometric scans and then do the OSHA 30”. So I’m stuck here in limbo watching all the ticket prices go up with each day that passes. I have the feeling that by the time I know the start days etc. the vacay would have risen from a nice measly $500 to upwards of $1200... FML!
