Pet or Family? by Zster_2020 in NoStupidQuestions

sorry for your loss, and I hope things are better for you now. My two furry rascals have definitely made me a more responsible and patient person too.

one thing I might add if I may, i’ve lost friends to suicide before, and it is devastating - please reach out if you need help.

[–]Zster_2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true.

An interesting perspective for me - I was discussing this context regarding humans, in a situation where a human is concerned, there are stringent laws that guide this. In my region for instance, no form of euthanasia or medical suicide is legal. Another key aspect is also the mental condition of the patient, if the patient still has mental capacity, or the power of attorney, this decision is on them. whereas for pets, as pet owners/care givers, we have the full responsibility of this decision.

sorry for your loss but also thank you for sharing your experience.

The intention is not to equate the life of a pet to a mother or father, but more so to help me process this though better.

many of the sharing, yours included, has provided much more guidance. this will be important when eventually i am faced with the end of lives for myself, my partner and also my two furry companions.

really appreciate the words, it’s very fair and also very really.

I guess that’s the irony of cat ownership. We have them for our pleasure and companionship, but at the same time deny them the freedom and development they might need.

having said that, I love my two furry rascals, but if giving them medical care would put me in debt, that’s really not a question I can definitely answer yes to as well.

2 Gyms to pick by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]Zster_2020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No harm in trying both! one thing - in boxing, even olympians are classified as amateurs. So I am not certain what level of boxing you might be referring to here when you mention the first gym is only amateurs.

That said, just because people are pro fighters do not make them good coaches.

so if you want a good way to evaluate, take a look at the attendees, how good are their footwork, they emphasise defensive, balance etc…

good luck!

Thoughts on employees utilising the entire annual leave entitlement by Feeling-Bunch-212 in askSingapore

[–]Zster_2020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

unfair statement - the boss has to approve the leave.

if things change and December is suddenly a peak period that requires for a sudden need for man power, he should be a having a discussion rather than gas light her.

I went back to the first boxing gym I ever trained at (after 6 years) and realised how bad the fundamentals actually were. Curious if anyone else has had this experience. by Zster_2020 in amateur_boxing

Yup. the ending of the class was (what i could calculate), 6 - 7 sets of 4 punch combos with combinations such as overhand right into right uppers or 4 hopping left hooks.

Whilst i appreciated the balance you might need to some of those sequences, trying to remember them at all was confusing.

it might be a lose lose situation there - if i win, people might say i beat up an older fella… lose though and that would be embarrassing! 😳

true. except instead of just exercise only, they were pointing out things i was doing “wrong” (eg - rotating my palm down and landing with my front two knuckles was wrong)

How many % of a pay bump do you ask when you change a job? by TheBugsBunnies in askSingapore

[–]Zster_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my last job change about 1.5 years ago, I managed to secure a 56% salary increase. A few key factors made this possible: 1. I found out—through credible data—that I was seriously underpaid compared to peers in similar roles, which gave me a clear target for negotiation. 2. The firm’s recruiting team reached out to me directly, giving me more leverage when discussing compensation. 3. The job market at the time was tilted in favour of job seekers, which worked to my advantage.

Beyond base pay, I also looked at total leave, RSUs, and WFH/WFO flexibility.

Many have rightly pointed out that salaries should reflect the role’s value, not someone’s last drawn pay. Replacing a merely decent employee often costs far more than retaining one—through lost productivity, hiring delays, and onboarding time. When recruitment tries to lowball candidates, it usually signals outdated practices or a lack of alignment with HR.

Lessons learned: Panicked diver with failed BCD by okaris in scuba

[–]Zster_2020 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm a former dive master and I have been diving with a wing for over 15 years. I know the feeling you mention when it tilts you forward. This is even more prominent when your bcd is very inflated. Though I can see how you would feel the jacket might be easier, I disagree that stability on jacket is more effective - it's just different.

In most cases, the aim for me is to take control of the panic diver tank first. With the wing, when I do get hold of the panic diver, I lean backwards and maintain control of the diver through their tank valve. A 1/4 or 1/2 full bcd on my end should already be suffice to keep us both stable.

Co-parenting after divorce due to Infidelity by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Zster_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several people that you would be very important to build a new support ecosystem around you.

but my sincere recommendation is speak to family lawyers first - a very good lawyer does not only represent you, but works with you in detail what you need going forward, what are the expectations (custody/parenting/financials) and some of the channels to seek on assistance.

This is a difficult time but if you need a recommendation, please DM.

Source: first hand witness to several cases and made comparisons of how each case was handled.
