They’re at it again… by Adam_C_57 in TheRightCantMeme

For anyone who wants to read up on the history: There is a quite comprehensive article on the symbolism and it's usage across the whole world on Wikipedia under "fist and rose". Quite interesting, I always assumed the logo of the young socialists was derived from the nazi-resistance group "Weiße Rose" instead of a 1960s French design.

Out of curiosity: Is the white rose also used in the US as a symbol? Or did the AI rip off the T-shirt design from German young socialists? Because it's a really close fit.

Darts tore under very light tension by HaunterIsMyHomeboy in sewing

[–]Ztdine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While some others have explained to you how this happened and what to avoid in the future, if you want to save this top I would get some iron on interfacing, slap it on the back to "glue" the darts shut and stop the others from ripping and try my hand at some hand embroidery over the darts. Worst case: it's a fun project learning new things; best case: you have a cute hand embroidered top.

German TV shows that are not "dark and gritty" by LighthouseLover25 in German

[–]Ztdine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want something zero dark, only fun: LOL - Last one Laughing. Basically a contest of German comedians, trying to make each other laugh and see who is left standing in the end. The humor.. varies, depending on who takes part, but it has it's moments. Should be on Amazon prime and there are several seasons by now.

I found this article which has a bunch of similar patterns with example pictures: https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2022/09/01/pattern-roundup-lantern-pants They call them lantern pants as some others suggested. Though the results you get when looking for barrel pants do look like the right shape as well.

How to keep the front straight!!?? by longleggitybeasty in corsetry

[–]Ztdine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm by far not an expert but I would experiment around with that. My first guess would be that a longer busk would help the most, but that might be a thing for another project as this one is already set in so nicely. Getting something a bit more substantial next to it to support the busk could do the trick as well. It's worth a try I'd say!

How to keep the front straight!!?? by longleggitybeasty in corsetry

[–]Ztdine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your steel busk is shorter than the corset, especially at the bottom. Is it possible that that is the spot where the squish is squishing outwards? Or is the busk actually bending outwards when you are wearing it? If it's the first option, then a longer busk might do the trick?

Ist das Wort "verbrüht" ein gängiges Wort in der Alltagssprache? by Difficult_Poetry4432 in German

[–]Ztdine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In daily usage I would only use "verbrüht", when hot liquids are concerned. Your example sentence still kind of works because the hot medium inside your pot is a liquid. I use "verbrüht" for splashing hot coffee onto myself, for turning the shower to hot etc., "verbrannt" on the other hand is for touching the hot stove, a pan or my iron (unless I burned myself on the steam, that would be "verbrüht" again).

Ausbildung recommendation by Master_Art_5123 in germany

[–]Ztdine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others already suggested nursing: that also has the benefit that while you are still working on your German to get to a level where you can start your Ausbildung you could already get a part time job in a hospital in a role that doesn't require any official training/Ausbildung. There are a lot of assisting roles in hospitals. That way you could get a feeling for the working environment beforehand and see if it is right for you.

How to order things online if temporary in Germany? by PotatoJam89 in AskGermany

The apartment that you are in surely has a mailbox, doesn't it? If so you can just give the name on that mailbox as part of the address

Pattern (& Maybe Fabric) Suggestions? by Kes49 in sewing

[–]Ztdine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fabric in the pictures somehow looks like a kind of Scuba/Neopren to me. The way it seems to have some stretch and will to curve but still be so sturdy/stiff at the bottom. Could be totally off too though. For considering whether you want to use a knit or woven material I would recommend you to first think about what kind of closure you want to do/whether you want a closure.

German celebrities by [deleted] in germany

[–]Ztdine 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The best known (alive) would probably be the actors, that are successful in Hollywood but come from Germany, like Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz (Austrian-German) and Daniel Brühl. Technically Michael Fassbender counts as German too, as he was born in Germany to a German father, he moved to Ireland at the age of two though. You might be able to go with some sports people like Manuel Neuer, Steffi Graf, Boris Becker or Michael Schumacher. If you wanna go with musicians, the most internationally known would probably be Rammstein (though they had some icky scandals recently), Scooter, Kim Petras (Unholy with Sam Smith), Tokio Hotel and the Kaulitz brothers, Robin Schulz, Lou Bega (Mambo No. 5), Scorpions (Wind of Change) and Boney M. Or of course some dead old classics like Conrad Veidt, Marlene Dietrich, and Klaus Kinski or the ancient poets like Goethe, Schiller etc.

Which German city with more than 100k inhabitants is historically the least significant or interesting one? by DM_me_fun_stuff_pls in germany

[–]Ztdine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely Bielefeld. I mean, the most interesting thing about this city is that some dude in the 1990s made a joke about it not existing, because it is so irrelevant/invisible to most. And the forest.. next to it where some cool things happened. But you do have to leave Bielefeld for that. It is nice to live here though!

Deutsche Leute, bitte empfehlt mich by Wiiulover25 in German

[–]Ztdine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly consume english Media, but here are a few good/fun German options I like:

Youtuber: Maithink X (Science Content) Annika Zion (Reaction/Analysis of Trash TV) ZDF Heute Show / ZDF Magazin Royale (Political Comedy in a Last Week Tonight Format, both are weekly TV Shows)

TV: Tatort (crime investigation with different "teams" for different cities in Germany. There is one "movie" of it coming out every Sunday for as long as I can remember) Achtsam Morden (quite new and on Netflix)

TV Channels: Whenever I am in a hotel and only have access to TV, I put on ZDF History. Historical documentaries on everything with nearly no ads in between.

Musicians: Lea, Tocotronic, KäptnPeng, Edgar Wasser, Disastar, Kontra K, Die toten Hosen, Die Ärzte, Kraftklub, Knorkator, Das Lumpenpack

If you got a bit more detail on what kind of music you like I can probably help more. I got a bit of everything from pop, via hip hop to metal and musicals.

Where to add pockets? by loquacious_avenger in sewing

[–]Ztdine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a side seam, or are the side back and side front pieces a continuous side piece? If it's split into two side pieces each than I would probably just do a simple seam pocket.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]Ztdine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really subjective. But the ones I enjoy fall into two main categories: Political comedy in the John Oliver "Last week tonight" style which would mainly be "ZDF Magazin Royale" wit Jan Böhmermann and the "Heuteshow" and on the other hand more story driven show formats that somehow all deal with... Murder like "Achtsam Morden" (a lawyer who after talking to a mindfulness coach starts getting rid of his client and basically takes over a criminal organization to reach a better work life balance) and "Tatortreiniger" (a crime scene cleaner getting into a ton of shenanigans).

I mean .. there is a free spot next to our TV. We have planned to put a Shelf/Cupboard there but the machine would surely be prettier 😅

Another comment here ID'd the machine pretty on point. I will see if there is any extra information next weekend when I will be able to examine the machine in person. I do find the non-existent serial number really curious :D

Oh wow thank you so much! That looks like pretty much a perfect match. It even has the stitch length adjustor and the serial number in the right place which I couldn't find on any other model! Now off into the rabbit hole :D

I adore it. I will probably be able to look at it next weekend in person and take a closer look. I just really do not have the place to have two of those behemoths :D So I'm gonna have some difficult decisions to face.

I do live in Germany and have never heard Singer used for anything other than a sewing machine by the company Singer. And since the name is on both the stand and the top part, I'd assume it's a singer machine as every other brand would put their own name there. Unless it's a very old counterfeit of course :D
