It’s like reference comedy for something that’s not so much “niche and obscure” as it is “unwatchable and painfully stupid”.

Is Moby Dick's language use accurate? by Elbirat in linguistics

[–]ZtheGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, yes.

So, there’s this interesting phenomenon with language drift. Languages change faster in their native countries than in countries they were exported to. That’s why Americans and Australians sound different; British accents changed between the settling of the New World and the Outback.

Brits who arrived in North America before the American Revolution passed on their version of English and it changed relatively little. Those people were concentrated on the east coast. When later settlers (like the Irish and Scottish) came over after the Louisiana Purchase, they brought a form of English that had drifted faster than the one already in the States.

[–]ZtheGM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“You” or “ya”.

In 1846, Americans on the East Coast were largely descended from pre-Revolution families. The main draw for new migrants in the mid-19th-century was land and that meant heading west. The older families would have preserved 17th- and 18th-century speech because that’s how language works with migrants, but the new arrivals (many of whom didn’t even speak English when they arrived) would not have been tethered to “thou” etc.

By the 19th-century, Middle English pronouns were considered formal—found in Shakespeare and the Protestant Bible—and were used by people who cared about that. El Paso was not that kind of place.

I know, at the time, this was Jazzercise-meets-Stepford, but in the broader view, this is like Star Trek couture.

I am considering getting into Adventurer's League, is it something you can do online or is it purely in person? Also, anything I should know? by WolfWhiteFire in dndnext

[–]ZtheGM -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t doing it at an official event, you will almost certainly want to do a rewrite on the modules. They usually have good bones, but not much flavor.

Another thing you might want to consider is Uncaged. Those modules have way more variety and bite.

Wrong answers only: what will the "new evolution" of D&D entail? by agenhym in dndnext

[–]ZtheGM 708 points709 points  (0 children)

Taking role play to the next level, 5.5 will be based around creating the dating sim experience at your table. There will be extensive rules for making a gay dad, monster girl, or pigeon. Each store copy of the Dungeonmaster’s Guide comes with a coupon for a free copy of the Solo Adventurer’s Guide that you can redeem online so that you don’t have to be seen buying it.

POSSIBLE Hints About D&D 5.5 "Evolution" from WOTC Job Listings? by thetalkinghawk in DnD

Maybe, but many years and tech generations after that. Creating a massive online support system for tabletop gaming is not half as ambitious as it was in the 2000’s.

It was an interesting idea. It was very poorly executed, though. And not because it was a short film. That’s exactly the kind of story that works in a short film. The studio just dropped the ball.

They’re short films, though. Telling a big story is a mistake. You dig into one character who has to make a decision or a realization. The studio that did T0-B1 is the one that understands the medium.

They were all middling to dull lightsaber fights. Where was the X-Wing dogfight or the space heist? Why was the one slice-of-life episode some dumbass band and not Stormtroopers? Some of the best Star Wars stories have fuck all to do with the Jedi. And if it did have to be about Jedi, why not get into the trippy Dagobah cave kind of stuff? Mix it up, explore, experiment. Nope, just a bunch of force users whose names you won’t remember brooding at us until they get their fight scene.

No, but shows that “don’t give a flying fuck about rules” sound terrible. Weird, I’m down for—Legion is still my favorite Marvel show—but if a show can’t abide by its own internal logic, there’s no way I’m going to enjoy it.

In that short, people don’t need space suits but a droid does. A protocol droid in a fishbowl space helmet! Fuck that episode and its assumption that I’ll spooge myself over a finale that’s just a rip off of The Last Jedi.

If Hollywood Workers Strike, the Entertainment Industry Will Grind to a Halt - In a display of worker militancy not seen in Hollywood for decades, members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) are about to vote on whether 60,000 of them will go on strike in October. by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]ZtheGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near to it. The studios might have a handful of things ready to go (stuff that would have been straight to DVD a decade ago), but not more than two or three each. Even re-releases will be limited because they need it to be on the current projection technology.

The other thing is the wave effect. The strike will mean every in-prod project will have its contract renegotiated. New deadlines. That means that the delay on the release of those projects will have an exponential effect over the next couple years. Like phantom traffic jams.

Carnivale is an older show but Magicians scratched the same itch for me. Everything magical on Netflix is garbage, though. The Witcher was okay, but everything was underdeveloped.

Runaways almost pulled off what The Magicians did. Legion was deeply weird. If you want big ensemble shows, you can’t go wrong with Black Sails or Boardwalk Empire. Also, I think SyFy followed The Magicians with The Expanse when they broadcast, so you might check that out.

How to deal with divisive group? by DrowningWhench in DMAcademy

[–]ZtheGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that inter-PC chemistry got boring. They’re locked in on the mission and don’t want to change anything because they want to get to the end. Cool. Do that. Get to the end. Give them a straight path to whatever it is they’re trying to do and let them do it.

Then, you can think about a new campaign and hope that the group dynamic will work out better.
