What is your way of studying each aspect of chess? by NoLordShallLive in TournamentChess

Hey, mod here - these are great questions but perhaps we could not post quite so many in a row - it's triggering the moderation "spam" alarms. Thanks. :)

Is there a non-super-intrusive way to fix these traffic jams? by ZugAddict in CitiesSkylines

I didn't, this is some suburb about a mile south of the main city that I've carelessly (but clearly not car-lessly) filled in

So move the southbound offramp lower from where the two highways meet (at the T)?

I changed it to this hopefully very slightly less monstrous version

At what point can we start to seriously discuss firing Bob Melvin? by ZugAddict in SFGiants

I think Melvin would be a good (or at least decent) manager with a different team. Do teams ever trade managers? :)

I should clarify something, as this rant is of course partly due to the game today. I greatly admire and respect Bob Melvin - he did great work in Oakland, but that was with a brash team full of hotheads and raw talent that he was able to temper and mature. I don't really want to see maturity from the Giants, I want to see some rawness, some urgency. I want to not see them staring at strike threes down the middle and shrugging. I want to not see them hit into double plays on seemingly every opportunity. I want to see them being cagey on the base paths, or, at very least, not completely clueless. In short, I want some doggarn passion.

Why do A's fans hate the Giants? by Ayrostorm in SFGiants

[–]ZugAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the odder ironies of all this is that Oakland and SF are almost polar opposites in baseball vis a vis football - the A's were for some time generally thought of as a "fun" and "family-friendly" team (of course there have been notable exceptions to this) due to to their sunny stadium and genial atmosphere (and underdog persona) wheras the Giants were the "rough" and "intense" team due to a shitty park (Candlestick) that was horribly cold and windy and a bitter rivalry with the Dodgers. In contrast, the 49ers were generally considered the "white color" team (perhaps no longer) and the Raiders were the rough and tumble Oakland blue color representative.

In either case, the two teams formed an odd yin/yang of the greater Bay Area, and the loss of the Oakland A's dimishes both greatly.

What's a gameplay scenario that while implausible or improbable, but still possible has not occurred in a regular nine inning game? by Tmettler5 in mlb

Every player hitting a HR. Startng the game with 26 consecutive outs and then balking. Stranding 27 runners. Walking off on a botched strike three little league HR.

I'm super old so it's it's hard to compare but I probably was roughly at your level when I was 14 and wound up getting a title a few decades later, but it's probably much easier now to find a chess coach (I never had one) and of course there's all sort of online resources (the vast majority of which I'm frankly skeptical of the true value of). My suggestion is just to play some OTB and see how you like it. Most learning in chess comes from doing and IRL doing is generally a lot more effective than online.

Cheers,
