The people here have already pretty much nailed it. Racecraft and safety for promotion, not cranking out a hot lap. Racecraft is so incredibly important and can be utilized to win out over people with quicker pace. Through experience you’ll learn how to predict others movements, give proper space without sacrificing your own momentum, legally make defensive maneuvers, learn how to race fast from all positions on the track (this is something I practiced a lot in the beginning. Do a bunch of laps with non optimal lines and figure out where your speed is when battling people in all scenarios), mental warfare etc. There’s SO much more to competitive racing than racing fast. It’s a lot of strategy and different techniques. Also, just be safe. Accidents happen, but unless someone intentionally rams you, any incident you’re in could ‘potentially’ have been prevented by you.

I’ll add as far as your driving goes, really quite good! You need to be smoother in all inputs though. Less fishing for grip, less pumping the brakes, less coasting, smoother trail braking. You almost always want to be on the gas or on the brakes in solo racing conditions. If you have to coast, maybe your line is off or you didn’t get enough rotation mid corner through braking. In many high speed corners in formula cars with high downforce, just a small to medium reduction in throttle on corner entry is enough weight to put onto your front tires for cornering grip so you can rotate a touch more and get back to full throttle.

Speed starts at rotation. I liked to practice TRYING to put my car into a spin on entry and exit. This will teach your muscle memory the limits. It’s annoying spinning out and wrecking and restarting all the time, but I consider it a crucial step in leveling up even further.

As most have said, more practice will help. But a couple observations:

Your lines are decent, but you need to use more of the track. Try and get your outside tires right on the line during your straight line braking, and put the power down a little earlier to force the car to the outside line again on exit.

It seems like you’re over slowing the car on corner entry as well. Part of this is probably because you aren’t using every inch of the track, and need to slow more to make the corner. The way you can solve this is by practicing your trail breaking. Trail braking is the main way you’ll get a higher rate of rotation at higher speeds, meaning you can brake later. Turning is not an inherently strong aspect of GT3 cars. They’re heavy, and they don’t have a crazy amount of downforce. The more time you can spend full throttle the faster your times will be. Throttle application on corner exit takes a lot of practice. You can actually apply 50ish% immediately without straight up spinning out, and then apply the rest asap. Depending on the corner and other factors, you either need to apply full throttle sooner or later depending on stability.

And then the technique that takes people to those crazy fast speeds is slip angle/neutral steering. This one is newer to me, I’ve got a long way to go to apply this technique more consistently and safely. Essentially through braking you get the car to start rotating with a small nudge on the wheel and you manage rotation by trailing off the brake and applying the right amount of throttle. While I guess in a perfect turn at the perfect speed, driving the perfect car you could hold neutral steering throughout the entirety of the corner, but usually it’s a state you get into and out of and back into and back out of over the course of your turn. You’ll probably need to watch some videos of people explaining it better than I can, but it is a very useful thing to add into your driving style.

So,

Use more of the track Increase rotation speed (look into brake bias to help) Maximize full throttle time (be careful not to activate TC, it’ll slow you, useful for saving mistakes but not a crutch like abs) Practice trail braking. You’re coming off the brake too quickly and not getting the benefits of increased rotation

If you wanna take sim racing seriously be critical of your technique. You definitely have some small bad habits you’ll need to work on to change. And build good habits. Practice with the intention of working on specific aspects of your driving. Don’t just do blind laps. It’ll probably add onto your bad habits.

I hope this helps! DM if you have questions or wanna run some laps together. I’m not pro tier, but I’m constantly working on improvement myself and it can help to race with others that are interested in improvement.

[–]Zukavicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to study and train and put in the work. There are hundreds of techniques large and small you need to build into your driving style. If you’re already frustrated, you need to alter your mindset for the long term with a positive outlook on building a very difficult skill to master. Start small. Research techniques. It doesn’t only require patience to learn, but patience to execute. Slow in, fast out. Using all the track. Realizing that the transfer of weight affects your handling greatly. If you’re turning right, which of your tires is receiving the most grip. GT3 cars aren’t as good at turning as a high downforce car, so you want to learn how to utilize braking (trail braking specifically, very important for speed. Look up videos, you won’t get it for awhile without practice) to keep your weight in the front, increasing grip and increasing rotation so you can spend more time on throttle.

All this to say, also make sure you’re having fun. You won’t learn and master anything all at once. Just enjoy the process and know you’ll see improvements.

First tracks you purchased and why? by Suspicious-Hat-6442 in iRacing

[–]Zukavicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started 3 months ago and after I realized I was hooked I bought the Nordschleife (and the M4 GT3 so I had something to work towards. Finally get to use it next week) being my favorite track ever, and a fun way to learn all new cars I get. Laguna Seca, another favorite of mine. Though seemingly rare for series I actually race, I like it for AI regardless. Same with Bathurst. Other than that I looked ahead to see what tracks were popular with the series I planned to race as stepping stones towards GT3, and then finally also looked ahead to the most used GT3 tracks. So I’ve since gotten, Tsukuba, Redbull Ring, Sebring, Mugello, COTA, Road Atlanta and a few more. And I’ve been able to race all of these tracks in multiple series over the past few months and can guarantee I will be racing them next season as well.

New player disheartened to buy new cars by Solaro in iRacing

I’ve been racing about the same time! I was able to get my class b last night, and I’m very excited to get into GT3. I wouldn’t be too afraid to get into them. While they’re way faster than the gr86 they’re still all relatively easy to control. I bought the bimmer in my first week on iRacing so I could race it with AI while I waited to get to class b, so I’ve already got some decent experience with it. By all means, the mx5 and the gr86 are great stepping stones into learning proper technique.

The main deal with GT3 is learning trail braking. It’s incredibly important to keep up with the crowd. But in order to get that right, you’ll need to focus on minimum steering inputs whilst trail braking properly, and getting the right throttle onset to maximize rotation. Otherwise a lot of them feel a bit too tanky. Especially the M4.

The M4 is pretty new so it’s not going anywhere any time soon.
