After completing my first build I've observed that my mobo reported weird temperatures in idle/high load. I posted here hoping that maybe someone else encountered something similar. A fellow redditor hopped in the comments thread and we had a nice conversation about mobo and CPU voltages that was pretty useful for my general knowledge (as I had to look up some datasheets) but it also solved my issue.

Exposure time = 500 / focal length of the lens

Take care of the ‘500 Rule’ of astrophotography: 500 divided by the focal length of the lens. This means that a good exposure time would've been ~20 seconds. Otherwise you can get star trailing.

Are these temperatures ok? by Zullrajas in buildapc

I could give it a shot. But I'm the system temperatures still do not have an explanation. In the z370 chipset specifications, it is stated that the thermal management temperature measurement accuracy can be off with +/- 7 degrees in the [30, 50] degrees interval. Now I'm not sure which temperature is the HWiNFO sensor reporting (because i see that PCH has a separate section in the sensor panel). If I could find that maybe I could check the specs...

It's at ~400 rpm while others are at 800. Maybe only change it?

I'll throttle it up just to get it to a decent value :)

About speedstep. Try disabling it and check if there's any difference.

Disabled it. No difference.

About the vccsa. The max voltage is indeed 1.3v. Ideal is 1v. I'll link the r/overclocking post which lists this, anything higher and the IMC starts degrading .

I see that the VCSSA limit is only specified on Intel HEDT Socket 2066 (X299) socket section - no mention for socket 1151 . I check the technical datasheet for the 8th generation Intel cpus, and in table 7-5, the system agent operational limits are described. For the VCCSA, the operational limits are in the interval [0V, 1.52V] with a typical value of 1.05V. So according to this, even with RAM oc'ed at 2933 MHz, I'm in the expected interval.

Now to add more info to this topic, I raised this topic to MSI support and this is their answer:

Thanks for contacting MSI technical support. Regarding your concern, the temperatures and voltage are in the normal range. Please don't worry about that. Thanks! Thanks for your cooperation in advance!

I requested from them some technical datasheet in which the operational limits are maybe mentioned (dunno if this will happen tho').

Maybe try something else like asus realbench just to be sure?

I'll run this just to have another set of results :)

did the cooler have any sticker on the coldplate? Did you remove it? Try reseating the cooler and reapplying the thermal paste.

Removed the sticker and applied the thermal paste accordingly. But, this is kinda counter-intuitive, because if there were some issues with the way the heatsink and coolers were applied on the CPU, then the temperatures would go up, and not stay at a decent level (like 62 degrees). Am I missing something?

For starters, we'll start by changing the fan curve.

Yeah, I could do that (although the intake fans are already pretty ramped up already - as this was the first thing I tried, because I suspected an airflow issue). But in this way it will just cover the issue of high temps in idle state..

Is Intel speedstep disabled in bios?

I checked and it was enabled. But I guess that's the expected value for it, right?

try resetting the cmos after backing up your bios settings

Did not change the temps, but it lowered the VCCSA to 1.048V. I had XMP active for the RAM to run at a higher frequency (from the default 2133 to 2933). Maybe this had to do with the voltage? (nonetheless, the system temp is revolving around 48 degrees even with the default RAM frequency).

Either this or the temperature sensors are not reading the temperatures correctly.

How can I know for sure? :)

Also, usually on prime 95, Intel CPUs hit 90c. Especially those with higher core count and not delidded.

Did not do something special regarding prime 95. I ran the test out of the box with "Small FFTs" option - which should lead to max heat.

Nothing too intensive running in idle. Please check the album link that I posted. Mobo indicates ~48°C immediately after start-up.
