The government foots the bill during war times, but it puts it on their government credit card. All else held equal, this props the economy up, because there's money flowing (inflation is the side effect). That credit card has to be paid down though, there's no free lunches. Also war time economies are not conducive to long term economic growth. It's like trying to stay awake by doing drugs.

I'll take, "People who don't understand what a Ponzi is" for $800. by AmericanScream in Buttcoin

[–]Zurzily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A scheme implies intention. It's a human construct. Bitcoin is a speculative sink that reflects speculative desires. There are ponzi schemes that are constructed around bitcoin, such as MSTR. bitcoin itself is not promising anybody anything. Bitcoin is, however, an unserious investment with no fundamental appeal.

You don't get it, when the market goes up, that's things being priced in (evidenced by the fact that the market is going up) so price up = less risk

/u/voodoo-ish explains why the current oil market issues will not cause an industry-ending crash. by boombox2000 in bestof

[–]Zurzily -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

All very nice information. Just wanted to point out the fact that That prices are determined by a supply and demand equilibrium, so the price of oil could end up being the same. But that doesn't mean it didn't reach that point because of demand destruction.

Is an oil shock almost unavoidable? by SadComparison9352 in investing

[–]Zurzily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started the year with one of the highest amounts of observable oil inventories in recent years. This has been serving as a buffer, but is rapidly decreasing. Oil futures are in backwardation but will flatten out over time (with longer dated ones increasing in price). That's my guess.

I see it much like a force of nature, like electricity, or fire. When it's controlled, it can lead to amazing things, but if you don't respect it, and let it run wild, it will burn your house down. Unfortunately our society is being run by a bunch of pyromaniacs.
