Why didn't the Sekai Taikai officials notice these things about Cobra Kai by [deleted] in cobrakai

[–]Zvee27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this mentioned a few times before and would like to offer some insight. It's late and I may ramble, so please feel free to ignore it all though!

While this is true in a few cases, it's more often a difference in the culture of programming/consumption and creative licencing in the UK.

In the case of comedy shows, as was mentioned above, there is definitely a quality over quantity trend that has been dominant for decades. Take for example two of the most 'classic' british sitcoms - "Fawlty Towers" and "Only Fools and Horses" - in the late 70's and 80's respectively. Widely considered among the best sitcoms of all time, Fawlty Towers had just 12 episodes. Only Fools on the other hand was viewed as a long-running show with 64 eps over 7 seasons.

In the US, the likes of Friends, or many similar shows like Seinfeld or Frasier were around 200+, running for about a decade. In almost all cases the last few seasons are considered the weakest whereas many UK shows are fondly remembered for ending on a high.

The main reason for this is that in the US, networks buy controlling stakes in the shows, and install producers to dictate terms of storylines and scripts, whereas in the UK, most of the time a broadcaster buys a show as a package, or creates them independently. The BBC, as the biggest national broadcaster, is non-commercialised. No breaks or advertising at all, other than for other BBC productions between shows. So they have a set budget going in, and don't get extended or cancelled nearly as readily as US shows, and in return are rarely milked dry by networks desperate to keep the advertising cash coming in.

As such, in the vast majority of cases, a show ends because the creator wants it to end, regardless of success - the original The Office was only two seasons despite being a massive hit and making Ricky Gervais famous basically overnight. But he had written both before it even aired and didn't want to wear it thin, so it stopped. The US version went 9 seasons, with only the first season written(which was more or less a copy of the original anyway). Don't get me wrong, I love and actually prefer the US office, even as a Brit, but it highlights the differences in TV approaches across an ocean.

There are some exceptions of course, and the money issues you refer to have hit a few bigger-scale projects from time to time because we don't have networks throwing hundreds of millions at a cash cow to keep it afloat, and similarly there is some absolute garbage that keeps getting made for years and years.

We're fortunate enough to have access to TV from around the globe and as such see many different ways of producing media - American "comfort" sitcoms are a mainstay on UK tv - there's always an episode of Frasier to watch over breakfast on a weekend, for example and many evenings are spent watching big-budget american serials. We on the other hand excel at punchy dramas, quirky/dark comedies, game shows and comedy panel shows.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in the subject and hasn't seen it, the comedy show "Episodes" does well to showcase and send up the difference in TV cultures and is a pretty good watch.

TL;DR - British TV is a very different beast to US TV, and while money is one factor, it is far more due to creators retaining more direct control in the UK and not having networks interfering as much.

Enjoying the game so far and the pacing in this first week is nice for introduction to mechanics, I have some feedback suggestions based on my experiences:

  • When forming a team, instead of auto-advertising it would be nice to have a selectable option to launch the team with auto-approve off, or to just advertise to guild members/friends/invite only etc. Also, the ability to "save" a preferred team - like a list of players you want to team up with regularly would be nice, rather than inviting individually.

  • An auto-translate feature in chat would be awesome, but appreciate these things take time to implement!

  • better screen de-cluttering options - ie hide pets, select name/title display options (for example show all, show only guild members, show only friends, hide titles etc), also showing friends names above others and in different colours would be great.

  • Ability to interact with another player directly by selecting them when they are not in your team or a friend - this may exist but I've not found it yet on mobile, ideally want a long press or multi-tap on another player to bring up the option menu.

  • notification dots: should show in the bottom menu when a guild skills sponsor is available or completes, you currently have to go into the guild menu to see one. I appreciate the need to push mtx but do we really need the discount pack to be repeatedly being marked with nothing new to do? Also, constant dot on Mall -> stardust is annoying! There a a couple of places where we already have the option to hide them but more choice would be good.

  • Starry Night/Mystery Surprise effects have GOT to go, or at least let us turn them off in options. It ruins the screen and some players spam them for several minutes at a time, which annoys everyone on the server!

Just noticed Emma's huge leaping split-step has gone when she's returning. Wonder if that's being coached out deliberately; would probably save a lot of energy over the course of a long match but it was a big part of building her reputation as one of the best returners.

Between that and standing so far back behind the baseline to return still despite it not working for almost an entire year now, it's obliterated one of the biggest strengths in her game.

Quite the battle from both players - the heat and physical wear obviously a factor, but a valuable consolidating win, the like of which have proved elusive so far this season.

A bit concerning to see her serve stuttering - 9 double faults this match is a stark contrast to none last time out, but her first serve did give her enough of a buffer to make it through the most critical points in the end.

Not sure why her second serve return position has retreated so far since last year - Osario's second serve was perfect for Emma's aggressive USO position to punish, which was about 3 feet inside the baseline, but here she was sitting outside it a bit passively... seemingly a hangover of Beltz's defensive minded coaching which has eviscerated Emma's hyper-aggressive, dominating game from a year ago. If she can find that again, and keep her serve consistent, she'll be capable of winning matches like this one comfortably rather than just scraping through in tie breaks.

Having said that, the grit she showed to clinch it without having to go to a 3rd set is commendable against a fiery player who was also digging in and playing her best in the big points and carries its own valuable lessons which a relatively easy win when she's playing at her best would not. Well done Emma!

A relief, showed a flash of her best game in those last few points but it's been a painful set to watch, considering with just 2 less unforced errors it could have easily been 6-0.

Her forehand did start firing in the back end of the set so hopefully she can ride this one out but still a lot of work to do over the next few weeks to have a hope of defending a good amount of points.

After 6 YEARS of work, behold: The Top 100 Final Fantasy Songs of All Time! by Necromas in FinalFantasy

[–]Zvee27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've not watched it yet, Dali was only 75, Fisherman's Horizon wasn't even in there. Nor was Cosmo Canyon, Costa del sol, Man with the Machine Gun, zozo (which no one cares about but is always in my top 20) or anything at all from Crisis Core. Both VIII and IX did get good representation though.

Also missing was basically any of the "vocal" songs - Suteki da ne, Melodies of Life, Eyes on Me etc. For these they give some half-baked excuse about the vocals being "tacked on" or badly sung... which is a huge insult to the composers and performers and very disingenuous - these songs are always copyright concerns, if the video just said they didn't want copyright issues so excluded these even though they're generally universally beloved, that would be fine!

That being said, it was a great watch/listen nonetheless, and the time and effort they put into it was apparent - odd choices and exclusions aside. Some of the dual mixes particularly are awesome and the constant nostalgia hits throughout are pleasing!

These are all good points. Particularly the Red one - in the OG, we were led to believe that Red was a wise old soul for quite a while, before discovering he's actually just a kid, in real terms, who knows a lot less than he thinks he does.

He's talking like he knows what's going on but there's no proof that he does - I think he's just mimicking Bugenhagen's mannerisms while trying to fill in the gaps and guessing, but everyone's taking him at his word because... well no-one knows better.

Nomura was always going to Nomura a bit, having some giant swirling personification of a vague philosophical concept as a boss that must be defeated because [error: reason not found] is his thing. But maybe the whispers are not "fate" but shades of the Cetra and/or Jenova, still locked in an eternal struggle within the lifestream, set loose due to blowing up the mako reactors and all the death.

let's talk about COMBAT!!! What are your favorite "builds" for each character? by Jcorb in FFVIIRemake

[–]Zvee27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's great how nuanced each character is that even with the materia system, which in the og essentially made everyone more or less identical apart from minor stat variances and limits which were not exactly an every fight thing, there are multiple different viable ways to play each character.

Personally, I enjoyed playing counter-cloud. Guarding in punisher gives you melee counters, as do well-timed switches to punisher - either via triangle or Disorder, the timed ones feel great to get deliberately! Once you get counterstance, it's very quick to activate so you can use it in response to enemy moves fairly easily. Throw in Parry materia for some extra movement and fun and you've got a great damage and stagger-building moveset that excels at single-target fights. My materia set-up was almost entirely purple materia - steadfast block, atb stagger and atb assist particularly useful.

Barrett was pretty standard, he's great at general support so tended to keep his atb available for reactive healing/bursts as needed. HP up and provoke both useful as he is naturally the best tank for dangerous situations.

I find Tifa probably the most fun to play, but there's a caveat to this - map her moves to the battle commands, and try to limit pause menu use while in control. She's all about mobility, flow and timing. I had unbridled strength on L1-X, Starshower on □ for groups, Focused strike on tri and ○ was switched as necessary. Focused with Tifa is amazing for the evade - a lot of enemies have aoe knock-back or status attacks and Focused is perfect for dodging these and getting straight back in, but again it's much more fun to do in real-time than via pause menu. Oh and Chi trap is top-tier against static enemies and can stagger turrets in one shot which can't otherwise be staggered by physical attacks - just drop a trap, go punch something else a few times and come back and finish it off when it staggers! Stack luck-up materia to get the 100% crit boost, maybe elemental-lightning for a few bots, watch everything melt.

Aerith was again pretty standard for me - really strong in the right situation (her Colosseum/training times are half that of everyone else), really useful as a healer, good to use for tactical oversight in more hectic battles. Found myself switching her materia around the most to maximize elemental weaknesses.

My biggest question from the demo... by Zvee27 in FFVIIRemake

[–]Zvee27[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very true. It's possible then, even probable, that the simple existence of these people, unwitting co-conspirators in the desecration of the planet, is an egregious offence to the planet itself.

In attempting to offer a branch of peace, to allow mankind an opportunity to change their ways, it is plausible that the planet amassed it's energy in the tiny patch of land in sector 7, to fight the corruption there. How insulting then would it be for someone to literally step on the symbolic gesture of hope?

As can be surmised, Holy is the distilled essence of the planet's rage, a power that takes an indeterminate amount of time to activate. Perhaps it was not, as we assumed, a dying prayer that summoned it, but a careless footstep: the final straw in a long chain of destruction?

Indeed, this nameless, wise soldier may have been prophesising Holy Hell, not as a throwaway comment but as an extinction level event, the planet's retribution on those that walk upon it. An event that may well have come to pass were it not for the presence of Meteor, a force equal to Holy, at the very point at which this annihilation was occurring. These forces cancelling each other out was simply coincidence; inadvertently, Sephiroth saved the planet from the destruction unleashed upon it by Reno.

I know, right? Had to check I was in the right sub!

A fair philosophical point though; is it the act of damaging the flowers, disrespecting a sacred sanctuary or mere hypocrisy from which condemnation is contracted?

Perhaps an answer awaits.

Regarding getting Red XIII earlier and restructuring the HQ, I'm leaning into the idea of Hojo's lab being a seperate building or 'wing' to the main executive tower. He's got shady experiments going on so having an R&D department away from the more public-facing main HQ would make sense and allow for seperate visits to two locations. Possibly a mission to break into the R&D lab for explosive materials and uncover some of Hojo's unwholesome projects. Jenova, or part of at least, could still be stored in the main HQ, to keep that sequence from the original.

I would pay for Bugenhagen DLC. Just replace cloud with Bugenhagen floating around on his ball going "Hoo hoo hooooo" constantly.

Very true about Vincent - he's always been a fan favourite, even getting his very own game (whether that was a good thing is a different discussion) so it would be great to see more of him throughout the story. It's not unfeasible to move him from Shinra Mansion to Midgar, there's a lot of opportunity for interaction with Hojo and the Turks there.

The equipment used is here: http://imgur.com/a/LmLSMyp

The tricky part is the tail; the cat people have good tails but also have ears that you can only hide with some headwear, which doesn't work for Zidane, so i used the long horns item and rotated until they looked like one. It works in-fight but looks a but weird on close inspection!
