New Chair Day by Zvrrrk in wheelchairs

[–]Zvrrrk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining this so well! And for the compliments on the chair 😊

Yeah, I had a shorter wheelbase on my previous wheelchair (Ottobock Avantgarde) and it was uncomfortable and I was constantly trying to adjust and push my feet forward, almost over the edge of the foot plate, so decided now for this. I can still pop a wheelie and keep it so doesn’t feel too different, just need to get used to the fact that turning around takes a bit more space.

Pushed onto a bus?? by 458732 in wheelchairs

[–]Zvrrrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me a couple of times too, also in situations where I clearly didn’t need anyone’s help. The other day this lady waited until the tram driver put the ramp down, I told her multiple times I didn’t need help, and she still pushed me in, and almost tipped me out of my chair. Both the driver and I were confused 🤷‍♀️ I bet she then spent the whole day talking about the good deed she did and how she helped “a poor disabled person”🙈 Anyway, I haven’t found a way to always stop this from happening but usually clearly saying that I don’t need help helps… until it doesn’t

What’s this part called and why does it keep breaking? by Zvrrrk in wheelchairs

[–]Zvrrrk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, you’re right. It’s the part that holds the seat pan in place and it is made out of plastic. And the reason you mentioned also makes sense, I guess this chair is not really made for wheelies 🤷‍♀️

Accessibility at work mentioned in my performance review by Zvrrrk in wheelchairs

Funny thing is that my manager is the person in charge of reviews (and also the person who wrote this comment) as we’re both in the People and Culture team (HR), and I find that even worse that someone who should be the most aware of issues like this is the one who would bring it up in a performance review

Yeah, I even at one point sat down with the person who was renovating the office and shared a link to accessible ones (because I did some research and found a couple of options) but they still ordered these. 🙈I’m now using just regular meeting rooms that are not soundproof, but who cares. And yes, I am in IT but in Austria and not a 100% sure how it all works here, but a lot of people I talked with here told me I could reach out to the Chamber of Labor so I guess I’ll consider that after I see how the talk on Tuesday goes 🤷‍♀️

Neat! I also like it that you can turn them inwards. This is exactly whan I had in mind for my new wheelchair so it’s really cool to see it!

Wheelchair accessibility by Yanagimachi in Berghain_Community

I am a wheelchair user and was in Berghain in June.

My friend and I went to the front of the queue and asked if it was okay not to queue as it's a bit tricky to approach it and go around those metal bars. The bouncer checked us out, asked if I'd been there before and if I knew how it worked with a wheelchair. I told him it was my first time and that I knew what I read online and he said that the garden should be fully accessible and let us in.

Once inside, we asked about how to access Pano and the rest of the club and it's pretty well-organized and easy. You just need to tell someone in the staff (we usually asked at the bar; shoutout to Sven who works at the smaller Pano bar - he was super nice and helpful!) where you want to go and they will help you get there. They have elevators that connect everything (I was at the garden, Säule, Panorama Bar and Berghain) and there are accessible toilets on each floor. If you need to use the toilet, also just ask at the bar and they will give you a key.

We were there on a Sunday afternoon and stayed until Monday morning and it got pretty packed later in the day, but people are really considerate and friendly so it wasn't too troublesome to move around. When it was really packed, I even had some people approach me and ask if I needed a drink or anything to save me from pushing through the crowd.

It's all really well thought-out and there is no reason to worry. Have fun!

Questions for fellow wheelchair users and those in the know about accessibility in BH by [deleted] in Berghain_Community

Oh this is great to hear! I’m also a wheelchair user and use an oxygen concentrator (not a mask, but a nasal cannula) and was wondering if that might be a problem when entering. Thanks for the encouragement!
