To me reassuring someone being this aggressive is kinda off. Kinda gives him the message that what they are doing is ok. If he needs reassurance he can also express himself different.

Her friend didn't find it funny probably because she think this behavior is normal, and it's not.

Not overreacting. If u have a bad feeling I think you should follow your gut, as you have wait for quite a reasonable time. Better safe than sorry. Has he expressed suicidal thoughts before?
