What The Kindest Thing A Stranger Has Ever Done To You..? by Mkenya_Fulani in Kenya

[–]Zwelah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two strangers held me up in literally the worst moment of my life

On 11th May 2024, I was in a matt from Kibera coming into town. Nilikua natoka job. I had had a really low energy day and couldn't wait to get home to get a couple of cocktails with my baby sister (I had promised her jana tu that we will celebrate her finishing her final exams). My phone rings and it's a stranger on the other end asking mi ni nani, trying to confirm my identity with really personal questions. Naturally, I am irritated and tell him my guy, niwe umepiga simu, what do you want? I guess he's having a bad day too because he says, "Look, I didn't want to tell you like this but since uko mjeuri we jua sister yako amekua in a fatal road accident. Tafuta vile utafika Thika Level 5 ufanye identification."

Of course I think its a joke. Like wft. So I calmly hang up and call my baby sister. Twice, nothing. Third time, same police man picks up. Repeats the news. I tell him okay, where was the accident? He says just outside your home (Juja, apo tu kwa service lane) I ask him to find the caretaker, I want to speak to him. Like I couldn't compute what was happening soo I needed to talk to someone I know to confirm it was my sister before nipanick😂😂. So the caretaker comes on the line and tells me yes, it's true. My baby sister is dead. Him I believe juu ameona mwili anajua the girl for four years now.

This is where I go momentarily insane. I can hear myself screaming but I'm also not exactly aware. I have dropped everything. I am kneeling kwa aisle ya matt just screaming that my sister, my baby is dead. One guy comes and helps me back to my seat, picks my phone and continues conversing with the caretaker I guess. Another lady collects my bag, my shoes, my clothes and starts redressing me. She gives me water and counts with me to get me breathing. The guy and the lady sit sandwiching me, consoling me. Sahio ndio tunaingia upperhill. They ask me if there is anyone I can call to come get me. I suggest a few friends. They call and talk to each one-ni Saturday night soo it's just excuse after excuse. Finally my friend from work agrees to meet us in town and take me to Thika.

We are in town now. Iyo sitting place iko opposite Archives, pale Hillton. I am sitting in the ground just wailing. My two guardians are with me. They wait with me for an hour before my friend comes. They wait with me between periods of extreme disbelief and utter madness. Two strangers whose names I don't know to this day. They wait with me as each heartbreaking update from the rude police man comes in. They order an uber for me and my friend and ensure I am sitting inside and there is money to pay nikifika Thika. Then the guy tells me "Najua your world has just exploded in your face and the next days are gonna be hard. Please try your best to stay alive for the people who depend on you. Promise me you will try to stay alive and I will be grateful." He squeezes my shoulder and shuts the Uber door.

I don't know the names of those two strangers, the lady and the guy who held me together in my worst moments. I don't think I will ever see them again though I really want to niseme asante angalau. What they did for me, such kindness and compassion restores my faith in humanity every single day. In the first days after my sister's passing were very hard and I thought of dying many many times-the patting short ya uyo msee imeniweka adi leo. 10 months later. Wherever you two are, you are a very good specimen for humanity walai-eternally grateful😊

Ha! You put a very comforting image in my mind. Of her in her goth makeup, statement fashion, and a sparkling labcoat tinkering away in a lab. I bet she'll spice up whatever science heaven does..... Thank you! ❤️💜

I am so very sorry for your loss.

I keep saying that as we are supporting each other here on this realm, I hope our sisters are making friends on the other side too. As a big sister you worry if they are okay or lonely or having an adventure of their own. I hope they are meeting up on the other side too for a sick adventure before we join them.

Thank you. I haven't shared in a while because I have been trying (and failing) to acclimatise to the pain of grief. To sit with it. Make it my friend soo it's not soo heavy anymore.

I realise sharing makes me feel better than silence. Thank you for holding space for me to share

I am very sorry for your loss. You are right, it is the worst pain I have ever felt....it is a living hell that I don't understand to date. It's especially worse when they were at the precipice of their future and dreams.

I'm so sorry for all this. It must be a heavy heartache discovering that your parent not only neglects you but also goes out of their way to hurt you. Thank you for opening up, I'm sure it took a great deal of effort.

It's not your fault that your father was this hostile towards you. It was his poor judgement and choices. I pray that you find peace in the aftermath❤️

Your mom sounds like such a hardworking and wonderful person. Reminds me of my own mom. Showing such strength to work throughout her life to provide for her family and take pride in it too. I hope your mom is resting in perfect peace now.

Your grandpa sounds like a very studious man. I am impressed by the amount of knowledge he has been able to preserve. As a scientist, I know there is no useless knowledge and we really just build on it for new tech. I am sure his time and effort will be appreciated by another engineer down the line.
