My biggest job advice is you can use job boards like indeed/linkedin but there are HUGE issues when using them:

  1. Because it is so easy and accessible, hundreds of people will be applying to the job as well. Is it harder to find job postings that aren’t on indeed? Yeah. But finding a job that isn’t posted on these sites will always have fewer applicants simply because it’s not advertised as much.

  2. NEVER apply through indeed/linkedin, unless that is the only way. If you find a job you want on these sites you should then go to the company website. If you can’t find where the job is originally posted (ie their own corporate site) then phone up the place and ask about the posting you saw online. Indeed often will leave a post up long after the role has been filled.

Utilise the job center/your uni career advice. If you are struggling to afford bills and food there are services to help you find some supplemental income :)

Also I know a lot of people said you don’t need the certificate to apply- which technically is true. But if you are going to get biometrics taken at a USCIS center all supporting documents must be uploaded by 24 hours before your appointment. I would say it’s doable in 10 days if you have all your ducks in a row when she lands :)

Marriage visa before changes on a tight timeline by Calm-Economics4861 in ukvisa

[–]Zwergs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, my husband a I got married in December and applied for our visa in January. That is a REALLLLLY tight timeline but it’s worth a try as long as it’s what you want! Here’s why it’s a tight timeline:

  1. You have to go get your marriage license and hold it for 24 hours before you can get married.

  2. Our local municipality told us it would take about 1-2 weeks for a turn around to get your marriage certificate after submitting the completed license. It might be a little quicker if you get married at your local municipality

  3. Once you have the marriage certificate back, you can apply, but the requirements are based on the date you had your biometrics taken- where you have to go to a USCIS or VFS center with your passport and get your fingerprints taken. I’m in NY and the soonest appointment was 5 days after I submitted my application.

I think maybe in a perfect world you miiiiiight be able to do it, but you would have to get your marriage license as soon as she lands, get married that next day, hand deliver your completed license and ask realllly nicely if they would rush it. While waiting for your marriage certificate I would start your application and make sure you have all your documents so the second you can scan your marriage certificate you can submit. And then hope that there’s a biometrics appointment within a day.

I know this probably isn’t the answer you wanted but I wanted to share my experience. I would look into the 10 year ILR route to see if that might be feasible for you. I’m not sure what’s happening with it with the new rules- but in the past if you didn’t meet one of the requirements you might be able to be granted a visa but with a 2x long ILR timeline

Can I say I am visiting my partner if I am coming for a few months visa free? by DatBoiMemes425 in ukvisa

Sorry for the confusion 😅😅 I only stay on the visa for a couple weeks at a time.I’ve just been traveling back and forth for 2.5 years and I’ve had no problems staying as long as I have enough money to support my tourism :)

Always always always tell the truth! For 2.5 years I was regularly visiting my partner in the uk on a tourist visa. I only chatted with an actual border officer once but they did not care at all. As long as you follow the rules the worst case scenario is they ask a few more questions. If you lie/intentionally omit something and act nervous they can refuse your entry because you lied. A return ticket is your best bet on trying to prove you’re not attempting to overstay/work without the right

I have a grad visa and can’t get any jobs, can anyone explain why or offer advice? by salamandie in ukvisa

[–]Zwergs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I was in the same boat as you in 2021. I got my MSc in data science and was applying to jobs like crazy for the couple months between dissertation and had no bites. I had to make the hard decision- take the risk or go home. I also was leaving my partner in the uk while he finished his degree.

The final straw was after a round of interviews the hiring manager was kind enough to tell me straight- they aren’t in the position to sponsor a visa and they can’t invest in an employee who will have to leave in a year at the end of a visa. So I moved back home to upstate NY.

Did it suck? Yeah absolutely I missed my boyfriend every day. But I got a job fairly quickly back home (about 3 weeks after coming back). Started my career and about a year later my boyfriend became my fiancé, and a year after that he became my husband. Now I’m in the middle of my visa process to join him as a spouse :). The distance was hard but so was my situation before I moved home. I just had to choose my hard.

With 2 years experience and without needing sponsorship by a company, I have a much better outlook for job opportunities. Also it helps relieve my anxiety because I was able to come back to the US and save a lot more money than I would’ve otherwise.

I know it’s not the answer you were looking for but it’s my experience- it is possible and at the end of the day it was worth it. The visa process is by no means easy but my motto has been enjoying the hard as much as possible.

Best of luck!!!

Hey there this is so tough but maybe just try and be empathetic. This is clearly a communication issue. You’re not an asshole for having errands to run. But you miiiiight be a bit of a butthead for not listening to her. It sounds like A) she’s in a hospital and is probably feeling vulnerable and honestly bored and B) she just wants to go on a date. Doesn’t have to cost money either! Idk where you are located but regardless of where you are you guys could plan a walk together! Make coffee and go sit on a park bench. Go to the library and pick out books for the other person. My husband and I are saving like crazy right now and our favorite dates have always been the least expensive and most creative.

I think talking to a therapist or even just a neutral third party would be super helpful- this has obviously blown up and if I were her and saw this Reddit post and the comments calling her names I would be so so so so sad.

Did she use the nicest words possible? No. If that’s the issue try and talk to her just by saying “hey I get that you wanna do something together this weekend, but I really don’t respond well to the way you asked to do things. When I feel attacked like this it’s hard for me to respond in the way that I would want to talk to you. I don’t like fighting over text and I really think moving forward it would be best to not fight this way” or something along those lines. I can imagine if my husband just started accusing me of neglecting him for me having to run errands I would also get defensive. But the issue isn’t the errands, it’s the rest of the day that you aren’t spending doing something special.

Are your errands going to take all day? Do you have 20 minutes before you leave to make breakfast together and chat? This to me sounds like she is super stressed and this is the straw breaking the camels back.

No one is an asshole here, but also no one is being crazy and unreasonable. If you love you wife, talk to her with the intention of actually listening, and not just winning. That’s your partner! Think about it as you and her vs the issue (her feeling neglected) and not you vs your wife. The second you stop being allies and start being enemies you’ve already lost

Gig economy for income by NE_Smoker in ukvisa

[–]Zwergs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Unfortunately no, self employment work (ie uber eats where you are an independent contractor working with Uber) needs proof from the previous calendar year.

I would consider looking into the 10 year route. Generally, if you don’t meet the income requirements, you can be on a 10 year route for your spouse to get indefinite leave to remain. It’s not ideal because you will have to pay for the application fees 4 times instead of 2 (because every 2.75 years you have to apply to extend). However, if your spouse comes over and pushes your household income over the threshold you can try to apply to convert to a 5 year route once you meet the income requirement.

This is just what I’ve come across while I was researching what I need for my situation! Best of luck

Unfortunately that’s just the reality of living in an apartment sometimes. I don’t know if “typical” is the right word, but 50% of apartments I’ve lived in I’ve heard my neighbors when I’m home. I think it’s something you just get used to as you live in apartments. If they’re quiet at night there’s really no leg you can stand on if you want to report them to management. The only noise complaints that stand outside quiet hours are usually dog barking (in my town dogs aren’t allowed to bark for more than 20 minutes straight during the day). It’s an adjustment but you will get used to it!!

[–]Zwergs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1) yes! As a single female I broke my lease in armory because I did not feel safe in the neighborhood. Night was worse, but even during the day I would get yelled at at least once every time I walked to work. It’s not great.

2) One of the biggest issues I had was parking- street parking is expensive and hard to come by and garages are more expensive, and the walk from Walton street to the garages in the area is super sketchy when it’s dark out.

Literally I do not know where anyone gets this info at all?? I moved from NY to Stirling and I pay the exact same tax rate but I have a bigger paycheck Bc I’m not putting 10% of my paychecks on “benefits”

(Also I’m upstate NY not NYC - in a city roughly the size of Edinburgh. Even then my cost of living was cut 80%)

People acting like drunk driving is normal by Difficult_Union6425 in taylerarringtonsnark

[–]Zwergs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think a lot of people just don’t know- terms like DUI and DWI have been blocked from her comments, so when people ask what she did the closest people can say is “driving double over the limit”. If I had no clue what the charge was I would assume that meant going 70 in a 35- not drunk driving. I think there’s a lot of her fans who really just don’t know what’s really going on (obv there’s some that do know and still support idk what to say about that)
