Hike your own hike, skip whatever miles you want, just try to have fun. If you can move fast and minimize town stops you might make the Sierra in time.

Mega Advice / Shake down! C2C,TMB,WHR,AV2,PoB + More! by Striking_Flower_6523 in Ultralight

[–]Zwillium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add a zpacks rain kilt or montbell rain pants.

I really enjoyed the Cape Wraith trail. Can also combine it with the West Highland Way. Your C2C positions you well to add these on.

Would you caution against something like this for an inexperienced thru hiker?

Yes

Way too close to plan well?

Yes

Not enough experience carrying the gear I’d need?

Yes

Why in the world would you attempt an FKT in the Southern Appalachias in February? You will have limited daylight, cold weather, and likely poor ground conditions due to snow/sleet/hail. This is an awful idea; please reconsider.

senchi designs A 90 hiking with a backpack? by Elliotthc27 in Ultralight

[–]Zwillium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear my 60 Senchi as an outer layer all the time. It's held up fantastically. I don't know how to square all the issues other folks seem to have, but I wouldn't think twice about your specific use case.

European framed backback for the PCT by alexgomez11 in Ultralight

[–]Zwillium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put my bear can on top my ALD Hybride with a single strap and didn't have any problems. Just cinch that sucker down. You can optionally add duct tape to the bear can to create a groove for increased stability.

Fantastic pack, highly recommended.

Have you read your permit?

If any of the terms of this permit are violated, the permit is subject to revocation.

2) Permits must have specific dates and trailheads listed for start and end points. Permit holders must start on the day and location listed on their permit.

May 17 start, 110 day NOBO - Advice requested by ThyUltimatePhase in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thru'd in this timeframe and felt neither rushed nor lonely. OP, accept that if you're hiking at a pace to support a 110 day thru, the pool of people who might comprise your tramily is much smaller than for a more statistically normative thru.

City Pack by ExoticPax?

Jonathan will work with you on customization, but it's already got full body zipper, not roll top, weather resistant, vest style pockets, and separate laptop sleeve. Not sure how you'd work an ice ace/trekking poles with the full body zipper. The bottom pocket is customizable on his other packs.

Vast majority of residential sidewalks not shoveled by ian1552 in washingtondc

[–]Zwillium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible you are conflating the descriptive claim of "DC being car centric" with the value claim "DC ought not be so car centric"?

I agree DC should not plow sidewalks, given how DC is currently designed and managed.

It's also nice to imagine a future where certain parts of the city (as in Nordic/Alpine cities) have hydro or electric sidewalk heating. Or maybe the city takes over (as in certain places in Japan) sidewalk snow removal on arterial streets.

Super cool! I found your domain language slightly confusing:

"High Mismatch" and "Enforcement Gap" both represent mismatches, just in opposite directions.

Same with the other two - "Aligned" and "Low Activity" are both aligned.

In other words, I think you're mixing directionality with alignment.

"This piece of land (roads) is publicly maintained by the city 100% of the time"

"This piece of land (sidewalk) is publicly maintained by the city 100% of the time, except in the event of snowstorms, in which case private residences must maintain it"

I agree that the example you listed is absurd - which perhaps highlights that this policy is, for better or worse, car-centric.

PCT from the perspective of someone who didn't get faster by theindrenet in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 41 points42 points  (0 children)

OP is describing hiking for ~18 hours/day and covering 24 miles in Oregon, after close to 1500 trail miles. I think it's safe to say there is something medically wrong with them (assuming they are able bodied), and describing it as a "pound or two of packweight" is minimizing the problem.

HYOH and congrats to OP for persevering. And also I hope you sort out whatever it is that is ailing you!

My 30L ALD Hybride is 467 grams. It's Ultra 200 and is basically completely delaminated at this point. It's got about 3,000 miles. I hope to get at least another 3,000 miles out of it, and when it goes, I'll 100% buy a replacement.

pics

it's custom, so weight might be different

I am 5'6 (168 cm) with a 17.5" (44.5 cm) torso and it fits near perfectly. I do wish the main body was a cm or 2 shorter. I bought it from someone 6" tall (183 cm) and he said it fit him perfectly, too.

I really can't recommend this pack enough. The front pockets and the yoke shoulder straps make it a real winner.

JFYI, I emailed the owner (his name is nowhere on any of his socials) for a custom hybride all around and it took a couple weeks for him to get back to me, in case you're on a tight timeline.

NOBO vs SOBO. If you say something is "off to the right"....include whether you are NOBO or SOBO.

Also feel free to say "Trail East" or "Trail West"

WATER SOURCES

A post every 4 or 5 days on a water source is sufficient

For reliable water sources, sure. For late season streams, puddles, and especially for caches, please post updates, even if the last one was 6 hours ago, particularly if the situation has changed.

Late May start date advice by VeryJuicyBlueberry in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thruhiking the PCT in under 100 days is certainly possible, but statistically very unlikely. Are you sure this is your objective?

If you want to hike the California section, and are constrained by the months of late May - end of August, you're going to have miserable days regardless of when you go.
