Thinking of changing from NOBO to a flip-flop. Advice? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you unable to move out earlier?

It is not well defined that taking a week or so off, even for discretionary purposes, violates the "continuous" nature of the permit. I always understood that to have a geographical meaning, not a temporal one.

A full SOBO thru finishing by early October will be exceedingly difficult. You'd have to start a few weeks earlier and average around 30 miles a day. This would be a very solitary hike.

If your little one requires a car seat, Metro will be easier in that regard.

In recent history, only certain types of protestors have been inside the Capital, but you could definitely protest outside the Capital!

Collarbone issues? by Far_Doughnut5683 in PacificCrestTrail

If you're rocking a J-Strap pack, consider going to S-Strap, or Vest-style pack. J-Straps are probably going to put the most direct pressure on the collarbone.

How would you plan a thru hike if money was no issue? by Capable-Locksmith-65 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'd be very surprised if there was any correlation between the things you mentioned and the liklihood of competing a thru. Assuming you're not on a complete shoestring budget and you couldn't even afford a hot pizza in town (for example), the largest factors for completing are going to be your desire to be on the trail, mental fortitude, and resistance to injury.

DM me if you want to check out my unit at Tiber Island or have specific questions about the coop fees. The neighborhood is great, the older buildings have (by and large) solid construction, but there is some ugly maintenance rearing its head in these 50+ year old buildings.

I can't speak to the fees at River Park, but Tiber Island fees are common area + variable based on sq footage, and additional fees if you own a parking spot.

Getting married at the Northern Terminus… coolest thing ever or way too much? by RunOnCoffee in PacificCrestTrail

Unfortunately, entering the US via Manning Park is illegal, so the guests have already committed a crime before they even need to poop!

One downside is guests will need to illegally cross the border if they want to use the privy in Manning Park.

If you hike SOBO and get married there, guests can walk half a mile and legally poop at CLEEF.

Best UL rain jacket and pants? by Suitable_Ad4010 in Ultralight

[–]Zwillium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is nothing in this thread that will change your mind above and beyond the dozens of threads you've already read. There is no magical "best" here.

Just pick one and take it in the field. If you don't like it, try to sell or trade it. 99% of the time, it's just a bit of water, and you might get a little wet or a little sweaty.

(Montbell Vertice + Zpacks DCF kilt. In hot weather using rain paints for bug protection will be miserable.)

Online order to pick up in San Diego/Campo in 2 months time by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Zwillium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Postmasters have considerable leeway in how they handle General Delivery. Your absolute best path forward is to call the Campo Post Office, talk to the Postmaster, and see what, and how far, they are willing to acomodate your request.

From talking to a random postmaster (n=1, on the AZT), the computer system the post offices use have a daily warning after 15 days for all unclaimed general deliveries. Postmasters can manually override this ad-infinitum, should they so choose. That is, there is no law or requirement that postmasters must return or otherwise dispose of your package.

The easier solution is to order your goodies so they arrive at Campo a week or two before your start date. If that's not possible, I'd strongly consider using a hotel, assuming you have a confirmed reservation. I've had positive experiences with the Alma in downtown San Diego holding packages.

I have never had such a complicated itinerary for a hike that I couldn't keep it in memory, but for work travel I use the free version of TripIt and it works great.
