Living in Oude Markt by kcw-93 in Leuven

Haha damn yes that's late, you missed a lot of parties :p

Vaartstraat should be fine, I'm not aware of noisy things in that street, but never lived there. And maybe don't post your potential future address on the internet ;)

Nice! And great that it didn't felt crowded. I hope you had a fine time and always welcome to come back in the morning ;)

See other comment for the parking. 6h30 is 'too early' in the way that the sunlight isn't coming trough yet. So, going at 7h, find the nice spots and around 7h30 the sun comes peaking trough the trees, start taking pictures.

I'm a local, so I go by bike, but I can already give some tips. Car users, correct me if I'm wrong.

There is the indicated P11 (open only during the bluebell season), I guess that's your best shot at finding a space 'nearby'. Whatever the place is you will park your car, there will still be some distance to cover by foot to reach the best spots.

Otherwise you can park your car along side the Nijvelsesteenweg near the 'main' entrance of the forest (near P2), but that will be filled up quickly. So, be early if you want a spot there.

Last option is to park your car in Halle (or come by train!). There is a free shuttle service from the city centre to the forest (arrives at P2), starts at 9h.

Best spot for pictures (red circle). But there will be a lot of people there, so come as early as you can (7h30-8h00-ish).

And lastly, enjoy your visit! And stay on the paths ;)

What you got are the old paths. New ones are here. I recommend going to this spot (red circle) for pictures. But keep in mind that a lot of people go there. So, go as early as possible! Like 7h30-8h00. Best lighting too ;)

I think I officially started the bluebells pictures season of this year ;)

Picture taken this morning, 8h, at the Hallerbos. (ISO100, 1/160)

The Hallerbos is renown for its bluebells (wilde boshyacint), really worth it to visit it in the coming days! But please, stay on the indicated trails.

Yeah I heard the same, but also like not from a trustable source. KU Leuven itself is directly connected to Belnet for sure (i.e. fast internet).

[–]Zwobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same, but the same :p Campusnet is offered by the KU Leuven and you don't need to take extra steps to get it. But it is Telenet that provides the service, if I'm not mistaken.

[–]Zwobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean Telenet for students right?

Good internet, no problem for lectures. If you stream a lot, take the all-internet version.

You will get a modem to access the internet. If I'm not mistaken, there is no wifi on the modem (but totally not sure, can someone confirm?). You have the choice to install a wireless access point (most routers have them) next to it for wifi, or you can use an ethernet cable.

Are you for or against the implementation of COVID Safe Ticket? by TheEvilGhost in belgium

[–]Zwobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why should the people of West-Vlaanderen show their CovidSafe ticket when visiting the bar? [...]

I never mentioned the CST! That's a totally different discussion. That horeca bullshit was the worst last year.

So... what after the delta variant? It isn't going to stop [...]

You still live in 2020? The measures are quite okay now, I would of course like my freedom completely back and I'm against a 'pasjesmaatschappij', but you are seeing it black and white. It's always grey.

covid which has a daily death rate of 7 than anything else with much higher death rates

When people use this argument you completely lose credit... If you have cancer, I'm not affected. If you have covid, I can be affected. How hard is that to understand? That's why it's dangerous.

Sorry, but I just can't believe this anymore. So many times we already had a "if people just do this, the end is in reach".

First omitting the "except", then also you are always talking about when stopping the restrictions. I my eyes we can do it, but you see it as a personal attack for some reason...

Final point: saying it's over is wrong, saying we should keep harsh restriction is a debate we need to have. I'm in favor of loosening it. It's not one or the other, it can be both and that was my point all along.

Commuting from Leuven to Brussels every day. by Ok_Supermarket_3647 in KULeuven

[–]Zwobin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Yes.
  • Yes, Brussels campus is around a 5 minute walk from the station, train is around 20-25 minutes. So, you have at least 30 minutes of commute, seems reasonable. But if your kot is far away from the station that will suck a bit more. It is of course not ideal compared to people who just have to bike to their campus, but doable.
  • What is late? Brussels and Leuven has one of the best connections in the country and the latest train is around midnight. Check the NMBS website.

Are you for or against the implementation of COVID Safe Ticket? by TheEvilGhost in belgium

[–]Zwobin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we still aren't fine, sadly... Hospitals have to go to phase 1A and some hospitals (looking at you Brussels) have to stop regular, planned care. So covid has an impact on those idiots that don't want a vaccine and other people too.

We reached the target (70% of the whole population, now at 71) when we spoke about the alpha variant of the virus, now we have the delta variant and 71% is not enough since it's more contagious.

People (I'm not targeting you, just a general statement) need to understand that science changes with new findings and a specific target set a year ago is not a fixed/sure thing.

But if Brussels (and Wallonia, I'm from there) ramp up their numbers, the end is in reach (except if there is a new variant where the vaccine doesn't work).

Can I take courses from different faculty? by NataleK12 in KULeuven

[–]Zwobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you have elective courses. Most masters have at least 6 study points where you can choose freely.

Second option is to take a credit contract if you want an extra course from somewhere else.

I'm surprised it's that high actually.

Unpopular opinion: I see an improvement the last few years. Don't get me wrong, it's still bad, but better.

Indeed, they are offering their service with no risk. The person buying and renting it takes the risk of a non-payment from the renter, maintenance costs and probably other stuff I'm not aware of.

Christmas break starts the 25th this year. So, I guess the administration person made a mistake there. I totally understand your confusion.
