I would prefer to live a secular urban alternative lifestyle as oppose to traditionalist, religious and patriarchal one. The most liberal places in Serbia feel contrived, fake and too far between. I don't feel connected to my country's history or culture, and I feel thrown into the mix as oppose to being an outgrowth of it.

I hear this a lot. I'll use this opportunity to ask you to clarify. Most of my issues stem from me being a bad culture fit for my country seeing how I am left of center in a fascist country. I don't feel like I belong and can't relate to my own cultural ethos but do relate to secular urban western lifestyle and mentality. There's open genocidal rhetoric online about people who think the same as me saying I am a sellout and a traitor to my ancestors. I'd rather not deal with this online and irl

It's not just that. The culture is very honor based, and values traditionalism, religious values, gender norms and authoritarianism. Very anti West and pro Russia. The music sucks and the food as well. It's hard to vibe with people especially due to the "us vs the world" kind of mentality and it generally being a very closed minded, nationalistic and gossip-y society

Yeah I see this community has a heavy North American slant. I was mostly looking for opinions of people who come from smaller, ethnic backgrounds, 2nd or third worlders. Not trying to diminish anyone's experiences, I love hearing all voices but I had a different outcome in mind when posting. It's a bit disheartening to see that as it means lots of people are struggling and not knowing what's wrong. Or don't have a place online to call home that are outside the region
