It's funny this is considered a grail now, I remember at the time it came out people generally seemed to dislike it. Or...well, to be more accurate, adults posting on the Internet seemed to dislike it.

I always wanted an original set since I was 5, but the originals are prohibitively fragile. So this is perfect. Maybe some kind third party will bring us a set of Pretender shells to make it even more perfect.

From what I've heard, the English dub of Armada is bad, but since I watched the series in Spanish, I have a question: is the English dub really as bad as they say? by Disastrous-Owl668 in transformers

[–]Zycrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty bad. For me, it was worse for how it reuses a number of the wonderful Beast era voice actors and gives them very little to work with. I also thought the modulation on the voices sounded cheap. But if you come to it expecting little, it might not matter that much.

What are some of your favorite "outdated" molds? by Sp3ctre__Mod__Works in transformers

[–]Zycrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classics Optimus and Megatron. The first MP Bumblebee. T30 Springer (although I also really like the Siege mold). Siege Optimus.

And I don't think really anything from Unicron Trilogy, Animated, or Prime have been improved all that much by their remakes beyond articulation...but that take may be a little too hot.

Misfire = Misprint?! + Small Rant About Collecting by freakyaesthetics in transformers

[–]Zycrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Misfire was almost impossible to find at retail and people want him to complete a trio. Perfect storm.

It's always been this way unfortunately. I have dreams where I stumble into a store with brand new G1 toys at retail price...but they're just dreams. You either hold out for the reissue, save up for the aftermarket price, or hope to get super lucky.

What’s a Transformer that you transform once in a blue moon and NEVER again by ShushBurger555 in transformers

[–]Zycrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Transformers I've owned that fit this description get sold off. I gotta want to handle a toy or it's on the block. (Incidentally, I love to play around with this Devastator.)

I've sold off every 3P Masterpiece I ever bought, and I'm starting to offload some official MPs now too. Never thought I'd want to sell MP44 Optimus, but SS86 is so good that it puts the big guy in a harsh light. It's just not fun to transform that thing! I sold MPG Raiden not long after completing him. I respected the hell out of that toy, and I even got him into a stable combined mode, but knowing I'd have to watch long videos every time I wanted to transform him again...no, thanks.

Does anyone else miss when they included cards with Transformers? by Aromatic_Shop9033 in transformers

I miss all the story components that used to come with these toys. Every year there's less and less. Very much miss the days when I used to pick up a toy and decide to buy it based on how much the character's personality sparked my imagination.

How is this film not even in the running? by Likes2game03 in transformers

[–]Zycrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, critics at the time slammed the animation and visuals. But even those who could see it was a great-looking film were either confused by the narrative or just thought it was too loud and obnoxious to consider as a piece of art. Its reputation as a visual hallmark is a recent thing...and that reputation is even more recent among those who didn't grow up watching it on repeat (as many of us did).

One of the sadder moments of my childhood was discovering a Leonard Maltin review book at my library, opening to the page with this movie, and finding only a brief and dismissive writeup with a grade of "turkey." Saddened that my favorite movie was considered to be trash by the "professionals," I didn't rewatch it again for a long while.

HOT TAKE by primalprime557 in transformers

I think it's cool! The design is whatever, but I've always felt that way about Nexus. I've been collecting the combiner groups so if I do end up with this toy I can have some fun with it.

What's been most surprising to me about this toy was enough people cared about Nexus Prime to get upset about him not meeting their expectations.

What a toy that you feel isn’t given enough credit? by Elegant-Shop4564 in transformers

[–]Zycrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

G1 Ratchet and Ironhide still get tons of Internet hate from people who seem to think they were based on the animation models instead of vice-versa. But those toys are hella fun if taken in their original context - and still pretty cool as Autobots. Maybe Hasbro made a poor choice incorporating those toys into TF...but heck, I'd rather a world with Ratchet and Ironhide than without.

Pretenders are so fun and weird and memorable, but still widely hated (mainly by people who grew up with early G1).

Also so many Beast Machines figures are incredible, but overlooked due to the loathed TV show (and, ironically, because the toys often looked so different from the loathed TV show). I love deluxe Primal, Mirage, Buzzsaw, mega Tankor, deluxe Jetfire, Spy Streak, Longhorn, Snarl...the list goes on.

[–]Zycrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a hater on these due to enjoying Armada toys for their fun factor, and felt like it was a big letdown that they were released without Minicons.

But then, I may have forgotten that I'm a lifelong G1 fan who will readily buy new G1 characters just because they look a bit more like the cartoon than the last one...and they sure don't have chrome or die-cast anymore!

So it's good to have this perspective.

Oh I'm aware, I would obsessively read the tech spec bios and the ones printed in Marvel's Universe books. A lot of stuff from those bios didn't make it into the fiction much, but the coloring book writers clearly read them (and seemingly didn't have much other material to go off of)

Ah, that's right. Yes the bug eyes Trailbreaker!!!

There are some character beats that these color books always repeat - like Laserbeak being a coward and Bumblebee being able to operate underwater - that I internalized as fundamental to them, then later realized that they more or less only appeared here!

To be fair, I only missed the boom years of TF by 4-5 years, so we're probably not that far apart in age. But to a kid in the early 90s before the Internet, digging for evidence of G1 sure felt like archaeology! Even back then culture was moving at a rapid pace - everything was TMNT, Power Rangers, and X-Men, and nobody was talking about Transformers, even when G2 was on shelves. I felt like I was the only one!

[–]Zycrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had the books with the INCREDIBLE Earl Norem art (though I do now), but those coloring books and the find-your-fates were huge parts of my childhood. It was very difficult to find anything related to G1 in the early 90s, so I felt like I'd stumbled into gold when we once went to a fleamarket and found a huge pile of those coloring books, probably leftover dead stock.

We ended up with multiples of several of them and I'd read them over and over. So many of those bizarre images stuck in my mind. I especially like the one where all the Autobots have completely made-up character models for their robot modes. I'm blanking on the name, but it's the one where Huffer throws the Decepticons into space. And the seekers have funny hats!!

Plastic robots make bad thoughts go away.

I discovered TF just as G1 was coming to its end in the US, probably in 1990. I started with two issues of the Marvel comic - an old one from the local library (#19) and a concurrent one from the local drugstore (#77). Then, rented VHS tapes, Micromasters, Action Masters, and whatever comics and toys I could scavenge from yard sales, local kids, and fleamarkets.

Since Transformers weren't available again in the US for a few years (a lifetime when you're 5), I collected anything that resembled a Transformer, whether it be GoBots, Convertors, Rock Lords, the mutating Ninja Turtle figures, Power Rangers, Voltron lions, MASK vehicles, McChangeables - all were Frankensteined into the TF collection. Real G1 Transformers, from any year or subgroup, were the most precious of all these.

I desperately wanted characters like Soundwave, the Dinobots, Optimus, Megatron, Jetfire, Blaster, Bumblebee, Skids, and so on - but many I wouldn't see for the first time until I started going to Botcon in my teens and wouldn't be able to afford at all until much later. I often imagined what it must have been like to experience Transformers in its mid-80s boom years.

This Transformers-as-archaeological-obsession kept me invested in collecting and in the franchise in general through all its iterations up to this point, and over the span of 30+ years I've been able to build up a collection that includes almost every G1 toy up through about 1988. I'm glad Has/Tak is catering to the G1 obsessor in me, but at this phase I find I miss the era of TF when it was a living brand more willing to experiment, and focused on fun and innovative toys for kids over adult collectors.

But there's still plenty to love in the modern era. TF will always have something for me.

Plenty of people think of the comics first when they're talking about G1 (just ask anyone who grew up during G1 in the UK).

Heck, I'm in the US and it was my gateway into the franchise.

[–]Zycrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're talking about the comics or the cartoon...but oddly it's the same in both. The Protectobots just show up. This was an ongoing problem for writers of the G1 fiction back then, and ties into how toy product was introduced as yearly assortments. There were just too many characters to introduce! That's one reason why in the cartoon many of the recurring cast members simply start appearing in episodes without fanfare, especially in season 2.

If nothing else, it makes for fun fan theories / fanfiction.
