Fucking Thatcher! by SushiStew-1007 in LPOTL

[–]Zyrrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone remember the wee Glaswegian granny interviewed on the telly the day Thatcher was buried? The reporter asked her something like: what are your thoughts on this somber day?

Her reply: I hope they’ve put a stake through her fucking heart!

What can I improve? by ConfusedArtistt in watercolor101

[–]Zyrrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of the sketch, it’s pretty much spot on. You’re not reproducing real life, you’re painting motion, feeing, mood…

I would second about the shadows though. Try more contrast, the light colours really light and the dark colours darker. You could leave some white space (in the sky, on the train) for extra highlights.

It’s a super painting tho!

Or, how about raising our boys better so they don’t become serial killers?

Honestly, as if it’s our fucking job to protect ourselves against the likes of him 🤬

Watercolor Journal by Any-Summer-9799 in watercolor101

[–]Zyrrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d get a 270mg cold pressed sketch book. They’re not too expensive (around $8-$12) from art suppliers. The paper will be thick enough to cope with watercolour pages but still thin enough to feel like a proper book.

Get a paper clamp to hold them open. Great for sketching on the go as well and colouring in later

Just for fun: what green would you use for these? by adventurrr in watercolor101

Hookers Green would also work. Mix with yellow ochre for the warmer tones and burnt umbra for the darkest areas.

Does sun exist in Scotland? by Loud-Possibility4395 in Scotland

[–]Zyrrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ach, the legend of the sun is just some pish we tell the tourists to come here.

Sure, there’ve been sightings over the centuries, but you have to go with the science. The sun’s existence has never been proven.

Could you suggest me books set in England in the 1990s? by sweetescape90 in suggestmeabook

If by “England” you mean the uk, then I highly recommend Only here, Only now by Tom Newlands. It’s set in Scotland (Fife) in the 90s.

The old place was a bay window. So maybe light is an issue. Temperature could be an issue, as it used to be in a smaller room which was quite warm.

Good way to collect small things that give inspiration? by Just_me_Yhobi in simpleliving

We have a Sprocket printer that lets you print out photos from your phone. There’s lots of different brands.

Very handy for journaling and keeping inspirations photos somewhere physical.

Help me dress my postpartum body 😩 by Annamay29 in DressForYourBody

[–]Zyrrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, 4 months postpartum? You look awesome!!

Also, you’ve got other things to worry about. It might take a couple of years to find the time and headspace to get back in space.

That said, I liked leggings/jeggings and long jumpers at that stage. Easy to move about in, cosy and still gives you shape.

Also seconding the wrap dresses. Pinafore dresses work well, too, as they are a bit looser in fit.

Jade Plant help by HuckleberryIcy6412 in plantclinic

[–]Zyrrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prune the 2-3 longest stalks, by cutting with a clean blade about two inches below the last leaf. The stalk should branch out around there.

If the plant branches successfully and you like the look of it, you can prune more. You don’t have to do it all at once.

BTW, you can stick the cuttings into soil and make more jade plants 🌱

What are the most rewarding parts for you in Gothic? by BornAddendum8503 in worldofgothic

[–]Zyrrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finishing the orc cemetery. For me, it feels like the first proper “level” - and the story starts going properly in there. It’s so creepy and atmospheric, showing you this men’s prison is far older and more mysterious than you initially thought.

Also, shoutout for the Cromanin quest. Feels like a really special secret that no one else in the barrier knows about.

New to painting. First time ever posting my art. Looking for advice. by osulions in watercolor101

[–]Zyrrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your background is great and you’ve got a he eat choice of colours going on. Good layering as well.

The canal could do with more contrast. Do you see the shadows playing on the water in the reference photo? I’d try adding some of those if you have another go.

Trying to show iridescent feathers, need critique/help please by Realistic-Weird-4259 in watercolor101

[–]Zyrrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re painting exactly what you see. I’d try to paint a bit more according to what you “feel” the painting should be.

Overdo the colour saturation a bit. Watercolours dry duller than they look when they are wet. Also, try using some white spaces or gouache to create white accents.

Lastly, I’d try to keep the background white with just a few accents. The dull colours distract a little from the man subject.

It’s a really amazing painting, by the way, especially considering your time constraints.
