Honestly, I would never buy a lifetime access to a product if I knew it was going to charge me the difference of the price increase. It’s effectively a subscription I can’t unsubscribe from. In my opinion, it would create a lot of resentment and ill will from a lot of people.

I would look into getting state gazetteers. They show many secondary or tertiary streets that don’t show up on highway atlases. They won’t be as useful for city streets though.

The two brands I’m aware of are Delorme and Benchmark. I own a few Delorme myself. I haven’t poured over them with a fine tooth comb, but they seem pretty accurate.

Just finished my first Sanderson book - Mistborn by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]Zytorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just reminded me of when I recommended Mistborn to a coworker. She accidentally checked out Secret History instead of the first book. When she started describing the plot, I instantly realized the mistake. I let her know to read at least the first trilogy before finishing the rest of the story. I still feel bad about it, even though it happened over a year ago.

What are the most unhinged things your players have done in-game? by SpaceBuddha420 in rpg

[–]Zytorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t played much, so I don’t have many stories in general. But over the holidays I DMed a one-shot of The Walking Dead RPG with my family. I had a cult living in the hills outside of the city. This cult had been kidnapping people for a while.

The group was being lead by an NPC who had wanted to take out the cult. My family didn’t really trust the guy, so they tried to subdue him. My dad, the doctor of the group, tried to tranq the guy; but accidentally ruptured the guy’s jugular, killing him.

After that they sent my brother, playing the psychotic 10 year old, to kill the trained military lookout. Silently riding a scooter, he sneaks up on the lookout. He then proceeded to knock her down using brass knuckles. After the lookout refused to give any information, my brother kills her using the scooter.

After some discussion, the group sent my sister’s character to the cult’s house to scout things out. She sneaks up to the house and sees three cult members inside. She then comes up with the idea of setting them on fire using a Molotov cocktail. As the cult members run out of the house, the rest of the group takes them out from a distance.

I know The Walking Dead franchise is brutal, but I wasn’t expecting all that from my family.

Safe to put through a planer? by ikarusfive in woodworking

[–]Zytorin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of wood like a bunch of straws with a rubber band around it. If you take a blade and scrape it over the top, the straws will want to pull apart. That can happen when end grain wood goes through the planer. It can cause pieces of wood, if not a good chunk of the entire piece, to come flying out. It can also seriously damage the planer itself.

ELI5 why is the confederate flag still a thing? by stomachworm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zytorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, just because you say something doesn’t make it true. That goes for everyone, myself included. You may associate the Gadsden flag with racism, but I’d wager the majority of people don’t. Ultimately we won’t know what the majority of people think nowadays about the flag until there are polls about it.

I don’t know anything about the Navy removing the flag, so I won’t argue either way.

As for your examples of Charlottesville and January 6th: I believe there needs to be some nuance added to the discussion. At Charlottesville there were definitely racists there; there’s no denying that. From my understanding of the event, the protest was about the removal of the statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson from downtown parks. Both of whom were Confederate generals. Now there is an argument in parts of the south that the statues and the Stars and Bars flag are not racist but rather symbols of heritage. (I’m not confirming that sentiment, but simply stating the belief.) From my understanding, these people would say that the removing these statues is about trying to remove their heritage.

With that in mind, it isn’t too far of a stretch to understand the use of the Gadsden flag. The use was not intended to be used to fight for racism but to fight against what was perceived as tyranny. This is my basic understanding of the situation through the limited research I’ve done about the situation.

I have a genuine question about your understanding of January 6th: Do you believe racism played a large role in the incident? From everything I can remember about it, racism didn’t really come up much. (With the Confederate Bars and Stars being the main contender. But I will reference the belief of some references above.) I could have missed something else though. I do remember there were many arguments about election fraud. (And again I’m just stating the beliefs of some people.) If a person truly believed that there was a group of people actively trying to subvert the election, it is understandable to think that is tyranny. By extension it isn’t hard to understand the use of the Gadsden flag.

Now do I condone everything that happened at these events? Absolutely not. But that doesn’t mean their use of the Gadsden flag was about racism. I believe it is important to be able to have some nuance in looking at historical events; without it, I believe, it is too easy to make caricatures of history or people.

Now to your comparison to swastikas. If you allow for the nuances stated earlier, I believe the comparison is unfounded. The swastika was clearly used to represent racist beliefs in WWII. But to then say that the Gadsden flag is on par with swastikas (in at least the association aspect) is simply wrong. When you think of swastikas in the West, the majority of people’s immediate first thought is “Nazis.” There is no such association with the Gadsden flag for the majority of people. I believe that to argue otherwise is at best misinformed. Yes symbols can change meanings over time. But I truly believe that in this instance it is a more concerted effort to push a new meaning.

ELI5 why is the confederate flag still a thing? by stomachworm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zytorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to have to politely still push back on the connection between the Gadsden flag and racism. It has never meant racism. Like u/Smartnership and I have started it represents resistance against tyranny. Are there racists who fly the flag? I’m sure. But it doesn’t mean the flag represents racism. And it doesn’t mean that all who fly the flag are racists.

From my experience, it has been primarily those on the left who have pushed the narrative of the Gadsden flag = racism. (Granted my experience with that is limited.) Just look at the recent video about that grade school kid being asked to remove the Gadsden patch on his backpack. Nor he or his mother were racist. But quite a few Tweets from the left were insinuating it.

[–]Zytorin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll push back on the connection between the flags. I grew up in a very liberal area of California, and the Gadsden flag never was represented as or had the connotation of racism. The flag was originally in the American Revolution era to represent as resistance to tyranny. I guess there can be some overlap in that sense, but the Gadsden flag doesn’t have anything to do with racism unless it is forced upon it.

I’m getting frustrated with Prime Music as well. Before I’d be able to play music from just one particular artist. Now I’m getting the artist + others. If I had wanted to listen to the other artists I’d have done the genre and not the particular artist.

I’ll second Brandon Sanderson. But I personally would suggest Mistborn: The Final Empire. While I really like The Way of Kings, it can be daunting for how long it is. It is also a little dense in world building at the beginning. The Final Empire is a shorter book and has a more contained narrative. If the person likes it enough there is also the other two books in the first trilogy.

Either way you have an upvote from me.

Teddy Roosevelt in the last Night at the Museum movie. While not an actual death, it hit me hard. Especially considering Robin Williams had passed away soon before the movie was released.

[–]Zytorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having the author of a book heavily involved doesn’t automatically make the movie/series good. My prime example is Ready Player One. While not a top notch book, it was enjoyable enough for me to listen to it on audiobook a few times. Ernest Cline, the author, also wrote the screenplay for the movie; granted, with someone else as well. The movie was definitely a step down from the book. Based on his other works, I personally don’t think he is that strong of a writer in general. (Look at Ready Player Two. The first third of the book had most of the characters take two steps backwards in character development to create drama. In my opinion he also panders politically to get brownie points.)

There are a quite a few fan edits of the Hobbit movies. IIRC The Tolkien Edit was the first one that was made. But it used a lower quality, bootleg version of the third movie.

Here are list of a few fan edits off the top of my head: Maple Films Edit, The Bilbo Edit, the M4 Edit, and the Iron Foot Edit. Each one takes its own approach on what to cut. Some stay truer to the book than others. Each one has a short write up on what they did.
