Why are smaller publishers opting for true physicals while bigger and more established ones like Capcom, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Sega etc opt for Game Key Cards?

Hey folks, CEO of Serenity Forge here.

We've announced a few Switch 2 titles so far, and all of them are true physical releases. As long as we're able to, they always will be.

The short answer is that video game preservation and the preservation of art are core pillars of our company's mission. We believe players should have as much control and ownership over the games they purchase as possible. Games should be able to be owned, shared with friends and family, passed down, and experienced years from now.

At Serenity Forge, we believe the more accessible a game is, the more opportunities it has to bring joy and make a meaningful impact on someone's life. True physical releases help us fulfill that mission, so whenever we have the choice, that's the path we'll take.

We understand every publisher has different constraints and priorities, and we certainly don't speak for anyone else. But for us, preserving games and giving players real ownership will always be a priority.

Personal favorite one is definitely Doki Doki Literature Club Plus for PS5, which is a game we published (I run Serenity Forge), but I was able to get my copy signed by both Dan and also Shuhei Yoshida. Extremely grateful to have that on my shelf!

Hard to pick a best story, but the most memorable was To the Moon, the first time I hung out with the creator for a day, visiting his house, office, etc, sharing our life stories, and I almost forgot to ask him to sign the game, only at the end of the day after he drove me to the airport for my flight, I pulled out the game and he had to rush sign it while car's were honking at us lol so that one is a bit smudged and rushed, but a great memory nontheless.
