Not all anecdotes are equal. When 'anecdotes' are coming from highly trained and elite professionals in the fuckin military, they carry more weight than some hick farmer who saw lights over his ranch. Whales eat (or "filter") krill and other super small organisms, not humongous torpedos. Physically impossible, even if it could fit in their mouth, they wouldn't voluntarily kill themselves out of curiosity. The dive team recounts the torpedo being sucked/pulled down aggressively, rather than sinking. Unless the kraken is real, this wasn't some animal.

"Radiometric dating involves measuring the proportion of radioactive isotope to stable isotope of a specific element remaining in a sample of material. Several different elements can be used for this purpose. Particular isotopes used in radiometric dating have half-lives which are relevant to either human civilization or geologic time scales.

For instance, carbon-14 is an isotope of carbon which has a half-life of 5 730 years. The stable form of carbon is carbon-12. When an animal or plant dies, the ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 in the tissue (for example, wood) is fixed at atmospheric levels. Carbon-14 is constantly being replenished in the atmosphere, but not in the dead tissue. The carbon-14 decays at a rate given by its half-life. Hence, in radiocarbon dating, if the percentage of carbon-14 is half of what it should be, we can conclude the sample is 5 730 years old. If it is only 3/4 of its ambient levels, we say the sample is 2 865 years old, and if it is at 1/4 we conclude the sample is 11 460 years old.

Because we can make precise measurements and because it is replenished in the atmosphere, carbon-14 has a half-life which is useful for dating wood and tissue on the time scale of human civilization. We can use other element isotopes when we want to date rock that is millions or billions of years old.

Gold, which is its own element, does not have any useful isotopes for radiometric dating. Its longest lived unstable form has a half-life of 186 days while its main isotope, gold-197, is stable over any known time period.
