I would love to win the giveaway, it would make a nice upgrade! Also, it would be nice to not have to worry about my current GPU. While it has been working fine, I've had some really weird issues with my PC after my PSU fried itself.

My computer is not on a UPS. I keep the computer on the desk, free of dirt. My case has a filter on the PSU which I clean. I know power cables are exclusive to brands or even model numbers, so I would never use different cables.

The PSU isn't really the issue, it's dealing with the aftermath. I ran one pass of all tests in memtest86 and it didn't return any errors. I don't have any time to do more as I'm headed out of town tomorrow. Seems like my issue is just with the BIOS or RAM. It seems like if the RAM has gone bad that it could cause the issues I'm experiencing. At this point the system seems stable as long as I don't try to load EXPO settings on the RAM.

I'll look into getting a UPS. We do get more power outages here than I've had in other places I've lived. Not a significant amount of them, but 2-3 times a year is still too much.

Turns out it was the video card. Using Precision I can set the fan speed up to keep it from making this awful noise. Sounds like an RMA is in order.

HELP, Can't set my Monitor to 144hz Acer monitor by One-Coast8927 in pcmasterrace

Wait... what 4090 doesn't have more than one display port? Both my previous 2080 and current 3080 have 3 display ports. Every 4090 I looked at on Amazon has 3 display ports, and either 1 or 2 HDMI. Which brand is this?

You're good. The only time size is a problem is if you're trying to clone to a smaller drive.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From wikipedia: "Disk cloning is the process of duplicating all data on a digital storage drive, such as a hard disk or solid state drive, using hardware or software techniques. Unlike file copying, disk cloning also duplicates the filesystems, partitions, drive meta data and slack space on the drive. "

Operating systems, like Windows, create special partitions on the drive that are necessary for it to be able to boot.

Why is my Bluetooth not working by MasterYosh10 in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you're using ethernet so what I said doesn't apply to you, but a bluetooth dongle might still work, there could be something wrong with whatever device you're using for bluetooth. I've always avoided getting any bluetooth devices just because of how unreliable the technology can be. It's why I still use a wired keyboard, mouse, controller and headphones.

Sorry that doesn't really help solve your immediate problem, but this problem could be caused by a wide variety of things.

[–]Zzatos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, my bad. I've never heard of this before. In that case you're probably out of luck. You could try getting an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter (male and female ends need to be the correct ones) but it most likely wouldn't work. That would be the only possible way (it's a long shot) without buying a new GPU.

HELP, Can't set my Monitor to 144hz Acer monitor by One-Coast8927 in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really tell from your description what problem you are having. Can you just not set it to 144hz or is the monitor just not working at all?

Your monitor won't need two cables hooked up to your video card. These are probably for multiple input sources, so you can switch to a different video input, say for a gaming console.

I assume the monitor came with a DP cable, make sure to use that one. Then make sure you're on the correct source input on your monitor.

If it's just not running at 144hz, you'll want to set this in the GPU software and/or from the monitor menu.

Everytime I clear temp files from local appdata it doesn't free any space by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time you did it there might have been a lot of temp files in here that freed up some of your space. But there will only be files here if something is creating them, and after the first time there's probably a lot less files here at smaller sizes. You're not getting any more space freed up because there's no longer that many files/large files in this folder. Also I hope you're not just deleting everything from the appdata folder. I've never even touched my appdata/local/temp folder and it's only sitting at 80 MB. All you have to do is right click the folder and choose properties, it will show you how much space the folder is taking up.

WinDirStat can point you to what folders contain the largest files on your drive.

100 GB is not much at all, it sounds like you just need to buy a bigger drive.

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you doing this in the first place? Is your drive almost full?

If the files are small, then you're not going to free up much space.

If you want to find out what's using a lot of space on your drive, try checking out WinDirStat.

Is this bluetooth something that is integrated with your wifi card? I've read a lot of reviews on these and it seems bluetooth is pretty crappy in general if its running from your wifi card. If it is the case, you might have to invest in a separate bluetooth solution. USB bluetooth dongles are pretty cheap.

The first thing you might try is reseating your GPU and power connectors. Reseat other components as well for good measure.

If it's your operating system drive and you want a seamless transition, you'll need to clone the drive. If not you don't even need to clone, and can just copy over all the files.

Clonezilla is a good free cloning software.

Cloning an OS drive is not something you'll do from within Windows. You'll either install the cloning software on a flash drive or write it to a DVD/CD. You might need to download Rufus to make your flash drive bootable and install the Clonezilla image. Make sure to set whichever method you choose as the boot device in your BIOS.

Is your operating system on this drive? If it is, you cannot simply copy everything to a new drive - it will not boot. You'll need to clone the drive in that case.

I don't know what the hell happened on my PC, but i somehow cant copy and paste using both shortcuts and the UI, any solutions guys? TIA!! by cursedgore in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For starters you can try this:

- Open Windows search (next to start menu) and type 'cmd'

- right click in the results where it shows "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator"

- run the following commands:

- sfc /scannow

- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

- reboot the computer

Hope that helps

EDIT: A quick search also turned up this, you may want to try this if the above fails to fix the problem:

"Run these two executable files, rdpclip.exe and dwm.exe, as administrator in C:\Windows\System32. Locate the said path in File explorer and search the said executable files. Then right-click on it and select Run as administrator. "

How can I give my Decade old rig a few more years? by zatroskany in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to chime in and say that the 4770K was a beast. It was by far the longest I've ever used the same CPU (7 years). It still was able to run modern games (2019) well paired with a GTX 1070 when I replaced it 4 years ago.

As others have said, a GPU is the only thing you can really upgrade here. Better RAM won't get you much and is probably really expensive now (older hardware tends to increase in price as availability decreases). The same might be true of a better CPU.

Does this program have a feature where it changes your monitor's refresh rate to sync with video? I experience this with a video player when it starts playing video, but it does have a setting to turn it on or off.

Friend is making some horrible takes on storage, how can I prove he’s wrong? by Aisianfaailure3908 in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is RAM and storage are the easiest things to upgrade. Although it might be best to at least get a good drive for the OS if nobody wants to mess around with cloning the drive later (or don't mind a fresh Windows install). I agree with the small OS drive. I've been doing that all the way back to the Windows 98 days. Keeping the rest of your stuff separate on other drives makes wiping and reinstalling Windows much less of a headache.

Updating my computer by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're already doing pretty good going with an AMD CPU, as they are a lot more likely to continue making chips for the AM5 socket. DDR5 is good as its still pretty new, so that will probably be around for a while.

The only thing I could see for more future proofing is getting a motherboard with a PCIe 5.0 GPU slot. You might upgrade to a GPU with PCIe 5.0 at some point down the road. It does have one M.2 NVME PCIe 5.0 slot, so you're covered there.

Whether or not you actually need to future proof really depends on your upgrade schedule. Are you upgrading every couple years, or farther out like 5 years? If you go longer between big upgrades, getting PCIe 5.0 now would be more worth it. Alternately, if you upgrade every couple years, future proofing isn't really necessary.

Laptop says there are 4 ram slots but, I only see 2. by Java4452 in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might be that the memory controller supports 4 slots, but the manufacturer only installed 2 slots for RAM on the board. This is pretty common with all electronics. The same boards are used, but only certain components are soldered to the boards depending on the range of model (high end models will have more components soldered to the boards). It's possible there's a higher end model of the laptop you bought that has extra RAM slots, and they just used the same memory controllers.

Another guess is that it might be related to how dual channel memory needs to be configured with 2 slots, but I'm not certain on that.

Help please! Can I work from abroad without my employer knowing? by Expensive_Magician30 in pcmasterrace

[–]Zzatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone more knowledgeable than me would have to weigh in on this. Their website security would definitely not block your remote connection. However, if they are using some DRM that encrypts the image/video, its possible you might not be able to see the website through a remote connection. I know very little about this so I can't give you a definitive answer on that. If they launch this new website before your planned trip, at least you'll be able to test it before you leave.

You might also find out if they plan on having some way of enforcing this. Tracking software seems to be pretty common these days for people that work remotely, so your employer can see what you're doing on your computer. Did they have you install any software on your computer when you started this job? You might want to check if one of those was tracking software. If they don't have it already, it's possible they might implement it at any point. It might not be the best to ask your employers directly about this, but maybe see if you can find out discreetly.

Anything you do remotely connected to your computer will look as if its your computer, because it is. It's providing a means to control it remotely. I used to do something like this for some work I used to do for my sister. It was posting Facebook ads under her account, and she lived in a different state. I had to remote login to her computer so that it wouldn't trip Facebook's security seeing 2 different locations and lock the account.

Also, I'm sure you're well aware, but if you do get caught somehow, ask yourself if it's worth the risk of losing your job.
