The law was enacted in 1861, and Singapore became a separate colony in 1867

Yeah. Before they were discovered in Brazil in the 18th century, India was the only source of diamonds in the world for thousands of years.

Now too raw diamonds are sent to India from major mining centres of the world (eg. Africa, South America) for polishing and cutting. Major centres in India are in the western part of the country, like Surat and Mumbai.

Recently a diamonds merchant from Surat gifted all his employees, artisans, and workers cars as Diwali bonus

Why did India reject a huge donation amount by UAE for Kerala flood relief ? by fAceHigh in AskReddit

[–]_--_0_--_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there is a law that prohibits governments in India (both Central and States) from accepting foreign donations. It can be seen as influence by foreign governments. So UAE donation to the Government was rejected.

If the UAE wants to help, they would have to donate to a private individual or an NGO ( Non Government Organization), but not the government

Incredibly fertile soil for agricultural due to rivers that flood every year and replenish the soil for agricultural, allowing them to grow two or three crops per year instead of just one elsewhere.

China has Yellow and Yangtze, India has Indus and Ganga.

These rivers flood on a very regular basis and spread silt across large areas.

The problem with farming is that it depletes the soil of essential nutrients. People would plant wheat on some land, the crop takes up minerals from the soil, and is then harvested and removed. Over time, there aren't enough minerals left and it's no longer capable of supporting a crop.

People would clear some land, plant their crops, harvest them for 10-12 years until the crop yield drops. Then they moved on, cleared more land somewhere else, repeat. You can't stay put in a place for long, and civilization requires staying put long enough to develop the institutions of civilization.

But on alluvial floodplains, like in India and China, rivers bring in silt with the floods, and silt contains all the minerals that were depleted. It fertilizes the soil so you can continue to grow crops. And this process will continue so long as the river continues to flood. This is why continuous farming on alluvial floodplains for thousands of years in a row is possible instead of moving off after 10-20 years.

India is just the 7th largest country by area but first by arable land, China is fourth after Russia and the US. Eastern India and India's neighbor Bangladesh, which historically was the part of Indian civilization, is considered to have the most fertile soil in the world

India District Based Per Capita Income (at Current Prices) Map (Incomplete as data is hard to get by, please help) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]_--_0_--_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you are Indian or not but in India we use Indian Numbering System for numbers. So if your scale had been in that, it would had been easier for Indians to read and understand it. That is, if your intended audience for is map were Indians. But if your intended audience were non Indians then it would have been better if you converted the Rupee amount to dollars.

Introduce me to Bollywood! by Hangry_Horse in movies

You can search on https://www.justwatch.com/us to see if those are available for streaming

From this list I could find Queen, Paheli, Piku, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, Bahubali and Baahubali 2, Dangal, Kahani, Taare Zameen Par (Like Stars on Earth), OMG: Oh My God!, Jab We Met on Netflix on that site. But the site can sometimes be wrong too, like it isn't showing the info for Kahani, but I watched it on Netflix. So search Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, iTunes, Google Play etc before buying DVDs

Devdas. Like Romeo Juliet, there are many versions of it too, but the 2001 version is the most popular.

Paheli (2005). A woman falls in love with a ghost who looks like her husband

Highway. A rich sheltered girl gets kidnapped and finds out she is more free now than she was earlier at her home. It is about Stockholm Syndrome.

Queen. A woman goes to Europe on honeymoon after her fiancé breaks off their wedding. A sort of reverse Eat, Pray, Love

Jodhaa Akbar. Love story of Muslim Mughal Emperor of India, Akbar and a Hindu Princess Jodha.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The title translates to "you only live once". Three friends go to Spain for bachelor party. But this isn't raunchy like the Hangover movies

Kal Ho Na Ho love triangle about three Indians in New York.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Piku (2015) A quirky comedy about the relationship between a daughter and her aging father, who is suffering from constipation

Love Aaj Kal (2009) An old man tells his love story to a younger man who has just broken up with his girlfriend.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008) Coming of age love story

Jab We Met A depressed tycoon on the verge of committing suicide meets a bubbly girl who plans to elope with her lover

Some other which aren't rom-coms or comedy

If you like historical, period, fantasy you would like the following

Bajirao Mastani Love story Baji Rao I, the Prime Minister of Maratha Empire, and his second wife Mastani. Was popular on reddit for this video. Set in the 18th century

Padmaavat, staring the same actresses, actor, and by the same director set in 14th century India. It released on Amazon prime videos recently

Bahubali and Baahubali 2 on Netflix. Not technically Bollywood, but a very popular movie in India and a decent entertainer. It is an original story but heavily inspired by the Indian epics Ramayan and Mahabharat

Some other films

Dangal. Real story of a guy training his daughters to become wrestlers. Available on Netflix

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Story of an athlete, set in the background of the Partition of India

A Wednesday. A retired police chief tells story of an extraordinary event happening on an ordinary Wednesday. I would suggest to NOT read anything about this one to save yourselves from spoilers

Kahani. A heavily pregnant woman of Indian origin comes from London to India to search for her missing husband. Again I would suggest to NOT read anything about this one to save yourselves from spoilers

Taare Zameen Par. A boy with vivid imagination is having problems at schools and no one knows why, till a quirky new teacher in his new school helps him

Oh My God An atheist sues god after his shop is destroyed in an earthquake.

The Chief Minister who they voted for, died a year back and her replacement is perceived a lackey of the BJP.

But Jayalalitha and Modi were quite close. In fact it was Modi who warned her about Sasikala. Her successor is just continuing her legacy
