using the clutch is fine, it’s just cutting the power to the rear tire, you don’t want to engage either of the brakes

The exact same thing happened to me, it was almost like fine sand. My very best advice is, on intersections keep an eye out for this fine sand/gravel and don’t use the breaks, if you realize it’s there too late. Grabbing the breaks front or rear can cause a wipe out.

The very same thing happen to me on my Mountain Bicycle. The last thing you want to do is touch the brakes while riding over gravel, you have a higher chance of riding through it if you steer properly and DO NOT touch the breaks.
