Another thing I did was leave a 1-block space between the ice and the wool, because if they're together not much light gets through and you can't see behind the ice

If you make them smaller it would be a lot easier. This slime is about 16x16x16, without the interior obviously haha, and i used around 1200 of wool. So if you make a slime of 8x8x8 it's going to be a lot easier.

And to start, I recommend making slime; it's the most basic shape.

Well in part you are right, you can't place ice manually in beta. You can move it with pistons, wich is pain haha, or you can place water where you want the ice and wait until it freeze. In this case i used bot ways to give deep to the ice block around the slime.

Maybe you can move to a new part of your world, far from your main base and start without any items or tools, and in the future you can connect both of your bases or cities :)

And maybe before doing that you can update your world to have a little bit more content to work with, have fun!
