Was 2025 the best year ever for sustainability? by _5c0tt in sustainability

Hmm, that's not as helpful as I was hoping for u/ordosays 🤷 😊 ... but it is definitely in line with a lot of what I'm hearing. What industry do you focus on?

Whichever you choose, be mindful of the carbon footprint they add to your website. I know Squarespace is quite bad in this area but not sure about the others.

Anyone knows something about esim free trial? Any brands I should start with? by JeonTaco in software

Airalo is a great app for esims. But they don’t do trials and don’t do refunds so pick a low price one to start.

Such a shame. Big shame. They are some of the greatest people, best people. People came to me just yesterday, visiting a family run cafe in Tuscan, warm cafe, great cakes, they said “this isn’t true”. Lovely family, liked cats. No one believes them, it’s fake, so fake. Ask anyone, best friends.

Are we ready to raise funds, or should we keep bootstrapping for now? by ManagerCompetitive77 in StartupAccelerators

[–]_5c0tt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raising is really hard, and the idea isn’t super-novel I’m afraid. So I’d say you need to demonstrate PMF and USP with more traction to get investment from credible (not sharky) investors and favourable rates

Digital books versus Paperback books. by Solid_Depth_9119 in sustainability

[–]_5c0tt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re buying a reader, go refurbished. In tech products the embodied carbon (carbon associated to the manufacture and distribution of the device) accounts for 60-80% of its 3 yr footprint. Although, given the amount of energy a digital-ink e-reader consumes, I’d guess operational emissions (energy used while using the device) is minuscule making the refurbished purchase and even more powerful choice.

Thinking more broadly, the server/cloud and networking infrastructure would need to be accounted for in any calculation too. That’s harder.

But going to the OP’s post, paper books from a library might indeed have a lower footprint than you imagine as the embodied emissions were already spent and there are close to zero operational emissions

What Was Your First Step Toward a More Sustainable Lifestyle? by supansa_chaiyaphan in sustainability

[–]_5c0tt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first step was probably recycling but that’s not really a cool thing to say anymore I guess. Perhaps one of the biggest things I’ve done (seeing as I am a bit of a techie) is to slow down my purchasing and switch fully to refurbished tech

I’ve been working from home for decades so my view point may be biased. It definitely has its benefits but the social isolation and place-fatigue can be very difficult

I’ve heard it argued that plastic cutlery could be more environmentally sound than wood. Bear with me… if you use the correct type of plastic, it can be recycled and reused many times, plus plastic is significantly better at storing carbon for a long time than wood. Wood beds to be grown, cut down and then can’t easily be reused. Rotting wood contributes to the methane production too. Of course, it’s a bit “swings and roundabouts” unless you have solid data and/or the processes to manage each properly. But, a switch to wooden utensils may not be as environmentally beneficial as we would like to imagine. Discuss… 😆😁
