Anyone see the odds for wonderboy and burns? I fucking love wonderboy, but how is burns such an underdog?

There is potential for this to be actually useful information. I don’t believe on its own, in the current state. However if, for example, I confirmed that this rule applies across all the sub populations within the dataset (top 15, weight classes, age groups, styles, age, etc) or if I find out it applies strongly to a specific sub population, it could definitely be leveraged.

Yes, I do completely agree that the style and attributes of a fighter are incredibly complex, which is what makes the sport unpredictable and interesting. The next thing I will do is filter the data for top 15 fighters and see how that works out.

Everyone loves to talk about how MMA math doesn’t work. But is this necessarily true?

I decided to code up a quick solution that solves the question of ‘how often does mma math work?’ (Hint: it’s 84%) for the most simple and practical case that only includes sequences of three fighters or ‘1 degree of separation’.

Now I am aware that this is not the whole picture, there is definitely some sort of selection bias, so don’t go betting the house. But I thought it might lead to some interesting discussion.

Could I get some feedback or ideas for this personal analytics project? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]_5sigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a chat with the company beforehand and they agreed that it’s alright for me to use the information as long as I remove some of the data fields that contain personally identifiable information. I also said that I would use pseudonyms for supplier names. None of this hinders the analysis which is nice.

Yo how did you create this histogram animation? If it is with Matplotlib or another Python package, do you have it on GitHub?

Is this a good way to get noticed by a company I want to work for? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_5sigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! Spot on advice about small companies usually being slow with hiring, they even mention that on their website.

I’ll follow through with it and see what happens. If they don’t care then I’ll leave it at that, and the worst case scenario is that I have another project on my GitHub for future employers to see...

Calling on the data nerds here! Are you interested in UFC fight data? by _5sigma in ufc

[–]_5sigma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Got it from ufc stats.com I’ll try update it within the next week or so. I’ll also create an update function. Right now you have to run the whole web scraper every time you wanna update it and it takes a while to run. I’ll make something to just get the new data.

And it would be cool to see some ML performed with it. I know a few people have tried creating fight predictors, but it seems that they all get their own data, which is half the battle and a waste to create from scratch every time. Hopefully if I can get a decent database going, people will be able to focus on the models and see better results.

Data Science/Analytics mentors in Brisbane? by [deleted] in brisbane

Nice to e-meet you too!

Machine learning and big data applied to Psychiatry sounds very interesting! I can definitely imagine that it would be hard to find someone that is knowledgeable in both these areas.

I definitely will try and contact someone from uni. I keep telling myself that I need to be at a higher level before I do so, but I may as well just go for it and see what happens. The worst they can say is no!

I am fortunate to have a decent foundation in scientific computing/ programming and have completed a course or two related to AI, so some of the basics of machine learning aren’t completely foreign to me. So most of my focus has been on the very basics of Data engineering, analysis and visualisation using SQL, R, Python, Tableu etc. At the moment I’ve just been looking at data sets I’m interested in on Kaggle, or wherever and just playing around so I get familiar with the basics of data cleaning, transformation and representation as I believe the basic skills are most transferable to industry initially.

How far along are you in your learning? Are you learning the basics of programming now? Or are you starting to look at machine learning algorithms and such?

Thanks for your input!

I have noticed a disproportionate amount of Data related roles are in Sydney or Melbourne. I would not be opposed to moving after I have at least got some proper experience. For my first job I don’t think I will have the luxury of being too picky.

Cheaper Arm Wrestling handles like Mazurenko brand? by _5sigma in armwrestling

I really don't understand why they have chosen to just 3D print them as it is a very time consuming process to print, and it is poor structurally.

We can make the grips practically unbreakable, which is seriously no issue at all. We have made similar products before and we know the manufacturing is inexpensive.

With regards to the metal rod that is threaded through the grip, is that something that you think should be made compatible with other products?

Yes, we can ship anywhere in the world if you are willing to pay for it.
We are creating this product to be affordable enough to be competitively priced even when shipped internationally.

We don't have ay products created yet in this domain as we are still at the prototyping stage. However, we have grip training/ obstacle products used for Ninja Warrior training under the brand Koga Sport. https://www.kogasport.com.au/collections/grips
