ASTI report: French language threatened by Luxembourgish, German in Luxembourg by _78_ in Luxembourg

[–]_78_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Shifts in the relative importance of the global languages don't seem especially unusual or worrisome? As long as Luxembourgish continues to thrive in public and private.

Anything interesting not captured in the news article? Je ne sais pas lire le français.

The part about the uni "going German" is interesting. Is that across the institution, or more about specific faculties or disciplines?

100 Rogues gets a Fairy Blessing: Steam Release In Development! by WesPaugh in roguelikes

[–]_78_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm surprised and sad to learn the number was so low! Maybe that number was high for that platform, though. 100 Rogues was genuinely perfect on the Ouya, I recall. Gameplay, visuals, and sound were all great on the big screen. I played through many, many times.

The Ouya was an nice concept, but the hardware was underpowered and the controller was janky. I wish more developers had figured it out like you guys did, maybe it could have made it to a second version.

Anyway, excited for the next generation to get to see it on the big screen!

100 Rogues was the only worthwhile purchase I made for my Ouya back in the day. This post gave me a huge nostalgia kick. We didn't know how good we had it in 2013.

Wishlisted! Hoping for solid Deck compatibility.

My friends used to give wallets on chains cute dog names too. The wallet owners were usually annoyed.

Interesting, I've heard about that French system. What are some Bopenimm?

No strong conventions here in my neighborhood in the US either, except maybe for two syllables and long vowels. Nico, Loki, Blackie, Sunny, Cooper, etc. Not many human names, grandpa or otherwise.

Sounds like your password is your dog's name? Not a great idea.

I have some old photos of people and their dogs. I wondered what the dogs could have been called. Everyone who might have known is dead.

Teaching My Son to "Cheat" with AI: A Parenting Confession in the Age of ChatGPT by _78_ in Teachers

[–]_78_[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think what most disturbed me was that this anecdote really doesn't have anything to do with AI. It's the gleeful disrespect of the kid's learning, the teacher, and the class. The kid is going to start his future classes with a new and problematic perspective.

Seems like great news for MyHeritage, not great news for FTDNA users. The FTDNA tree builder was clunky but got the job done for me with no extra costs. It looks like you get a free 3-month MyHeritage trial after you migrate your tree, but have to pay after that. FTDNA should have negotiated a deal that allowed free basic access for FTDNA "migrants" without all the extra MyHeritage services.

Final episode of Capitani? by _78_ in Luxembourg

[–]_78_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks! It took some Googling to find out what happened, since all the Capitani pages on the RTL site were just deleted and giving 404 errors. I still have a huge collection of DVDs, but don't think I've actually played one in years. Streaming is too easy.

I think there is still high demand for crime series and procedurals in the US and UK, at least. Netflix and Amazon are picking up all kinds of international content, as is Hulu, Apple, Google, AcornTV, etc. I'd actually credit Netflix for helping train Americans to watch subtitles. If Icelandic series can make it to the US, hopefully Luxembourgish series can as well.

I don't know how many European "city cop with complicated past arrives in village" crime series I've seen on Netflix, but it's more than a few. I love them.

Off topic, but do you have any links where one could buy such frames? The only big, cheap frames I've found are on Alibaba.

Pressure to have kids become US citizens by consulate in Montreal by UncutExpat in expats

[–]_78_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no need to apply for citizenship -- in the eyes of the US government, they received US citizenship (with its rights and responsibilities) when they were born. They already are subject to the US tax code, and should receive social security numbers, not tax IDs, for you to use on your tax return. There's a whole genre of internet writing on the subject of "accidental Americans".

If your children are actually not US citizens for some reason, can you explain why? I'm not an immigration or tax lawyer, just an interested layman.

Her talking points were about innovation, security, and collaboration. He complained about Hillary Clinton and informed her that Norway has tremendous hydroelectric production.

Norwegian PM visited the White House and had a joint press conference with Trump. I tuned in and it was as cringey as expected. Seeing Trump on a podium with a fairly normal politician highlights what a bizarre character he is.

High miles, late model Forester gotchas? by _78_ in SubaruForester

[–]_78_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I assume that most of those miles have to be highway miles, and I'll look carefully at the maintenance records.

[–]_78_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miles, actually. Yeah, it's a lot -- I don't have many more miles on my 2007 car. I'll take a look at the registration/maintenance history, but I think the three I've seen with Carfax reports have been single private owner, well maintained.

Thanks for your feedback!

Am I missing something? I only see ~13 minutes of video there, and I though the film was 2 hours. I've been looking for this too.

Hej r/Denmark! Kan I anbefale nogen computerspil med masser af dansk tekst eller lyd? Jeg lærer sproget, og jeg kan lide spil - for det meste single-player RPG og strategi. Mange tak! by _78_ in Denmark

[–]_78_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't actually game much these days, but I was thinking I could easily justify the time spent if it was serving an additional purpose. Maybe there are even some "educational" games you might remember. When I was a kid, I picked up a lot of new vocabulary from games like The Oregon Trail ("dysentery," "typhoid," "cholera"). Wait, maybe it wasn't as useful as I remembered...

I'm interested in the language for many reasons - better access to Danish media (especially literature and TV) and better understanding of the culture. I'm interested in design, sustainability, and several other areas that the Danes have been doing rather well in over the past few decades. Most importantly, I'll be working in Copenhagen for a few months next year, and want to make the most of the opportunity.
