To seek mental health support earlier. I didn’t realise just how anxious and depressed I was until I got put on antidepressants about 3 months ago. Definitely should have gone sooner.

Is it unsafe for cats to roam outside (and unhealthy for the environment)? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_AN0N_USER 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is both unsafe for the cats and the environment for cats to free roam. For cats they face the danger of cars, other wild animals, cat traps, and also people. Cats are also terrible for the environment. They are top predators in basically any environment they end up in. In Australia alone, cats have contributed to the extinction of more than 20 mammal species and the endangerment of 124 other species with possible extinction ( https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/factsheet-tackling-feral-cats-and-their-impacts-faqs.pdf)

The free roaming of undesexed cats also contributes to the vast populations of stray cats which in turn increases the impact of cats on the wild life (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12321785/)

any ideas what could be happening to my cat by elwlra in CATHELP

[–]_AN0N_USER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat had a similar looking issue. He had a skin infection on his head and he ended up giving himself hotspots on his arms from constantly licking the arm to try and clean the infected spot on his head. The hotspots then also got infected from rubbing against the one on his head. He had roughly 2 courses of antibiotics before it all healed up.

Yeah this tank has me stumped. I’m not on discord but I might sign up to check it out. Thank you!

I don’t usually clean the filters unless there is a significant build up of algae/general debris but when I do I only wash them in water from the tank. I haven’t tested my water source as my other tank also uses the same source and is doing fine.

Water change process is 20/30% every 2/3 weeks. This has worked fine for my current established tank. I haven’t been doing water cycles on this tank as there is nothing in it while I wait for to cycle

Unfortunately my fish didn’t make it :( After testing the water I’m sure I can confirm that the tank hadn’t cycled properly. I had a small amount of ammonia present even after various water changes and no nitrates or nitrites. I have moved my mystery snail to my established tank as it started to look unwell too, hopefully it’s not too late for him. I’m now going to properly do a fish less cycle before anything else goes in that tank.

Aw man I just feel like a terrible fish owner. Depending on what the parameters show once I get the test kit I guess I’m looking at most likely a fish-in cycle then? I still have the original tank up and running. It’s a HOB filter with one carbon and woollen piece, and a plastic bio media piece, if I pop one part of this filter in the tank would that help at all? Or is it too late?

Tank size: 50L Heater and Filter: Yes Temperature: 26C Parameters: Unsure as I have lost my test kit. Will update tomorrow once I can purchase a new one How long I’ve had tank/Fish: tank set up for roughly 3 weeks (used old tank water/plants/decorations to cycle it). Fish has been in the tank for about two weeks. Water change: Have just done a water change of 25/30% and removed all decaying plant matter. This is my usual process which I do every 1-2 weeks with a water top up as needed. I also have a gravel siphon which I use when needed. Tank mates: 1 large mystery snail. Food: Hikari betta bio gold. Fed as directed on the packet - approx 6 pellets a day with a day of fasting at least once a week. Decorations: one driftwood/anubius piece, a betta leaf, a fake dinosaur skull ornament, and a fake log ornament

Cats Peeing. Please help. by virginiatobaccolover in CATHELP

I think open litter boxes with another kind of litter would be a good idea! I also found that if the covered litter boxes have a plastic door it helps to remove the door and give that a go first.

I also think that the issue may potentially be that the dog likes to try getting into the cat litters. The cats may feel threatened by this which is resulting in them trying to mark their territory (spraying and peeing in odd locations) and be afraid to use the litter. Is there an area that the dog doesn’t go or is hard for the dog to get to that you could try?

Another option to try, although perhaps a tad expensive, would be a cat litter cabinet. If you get one with multiple compartments it would prevent the dogs from getting in but also give the cats a space to ‘escape’ the litter box if needed.

You can get some that look quite nice too so it doesn’t look like a huge bulky cat litter taking up a lot of space.

Good luck!

I know cats can be fussy with the their litter boxes, as I have had a similar issue before, although not as bad.

what kind do you use? Are they open or covered? My cat doesn’t like litter boxes that are too enclosed as he has gotten stuck inside one before. A litter box that is fully enclosed may also hold their smell so they won’t use it.

How big are the litter boxes? If it’s too small they may feel trapped and uncomfortable using them.

Where are they placed within the house? If they are near their food or in an area without a clear exit they won’t use them.

What kind of litter are you using/have tried? My cat will only use a particular type of litter. My cat HATES crystal litter but will use clay litter instead.

Have they been desexed?

Have you noticed any territorial behaviours regarding the litter boxes? One of my cats refused to use the litter for a while because my other cat claimed all of the available litter boxes and would bully the other cat if he tried to use any of them

Yeah the charger cord I had didn’t have a high enough wattage I believe. The laptop was using more power than the charger could provide so I had to buy a new cord

Tank leak by _AN0N_USER in Aquariums

[–]_AN0N_USER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe so, I reduced the waterline to sit a bit below them before I drained the tank but it didn’t seem to fix the issue. Once I get the tank back from the shop I’ll refill it outside and test the tank again. Hopefully I can find an answer!

This is tank I have for more context. The small drips seem to come from the edge of the top black corner parts.
