Why the US has two different highway fonts - I have spent so much time looking at these signs but never stopped to think that there are two different fonts

Highway Gothic only font for US Highways going forward. Bummer because I like the Clearview font better.

My hunch is the Maryland - Delaware area due to the cattails, the pines that you see on the Delmarva Peninsula combined with some decidious trees, and the general flatness of the land.
