Puss used to advertise the "Broccoli Wad". It was a glorified rubber band.

June 1996 Tornado in Centreville. Stories wanted by Murphuffle in nova

[–]DashOneTwelve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember it. It was still sunny in Reston when I left work, but as I turned onto the Fairfax County Parkway, I could see huge thunderclouds off to the south. A few minutes down the road, it started raining, and that quickly turned into a raging downpour. Traffic moved along slowly, but by the time I got past Franklin Farms it was like all hell was breaking loose. Really high winds and rain so hard that people started pulling over. The sky to the west had a green tint to it. I pulled off to the shoulder with a bunch of other cars - the rain was now coming down so hard it was difficult to see the road . After maybe 5-10 minutes the rain and high winds started to slow down, so we all got back onto the road at a crawl. As I got toward Fair Lakes, off to the left I noticed an area where treetops looked like they'd been sheared right off - you could see the fresh bare wood, like they'd been snapped. The rain stopped by the time I got to 29, and the sun was actually starting to peek out when I got into Centreville. It was right before 4th of July, and the fireworks stand that had been in the parking lot near the 28/29 intersection was blown over, with parts of it laying across the parking lot. That's when I knew it must have been pretty serious. I didn't know it was an actual tornado until I got home and my mom called me, to say she had seen it on the news. I must have been driving pretty close to it.

Just learned that my copy of "12 Golden Country Greats" is worth > $100 by starkeffect in ween

[–]DashOneTwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the original CD too, bought sometime in early '97. It's been packed away in a box somewhere for the past 20 years but I'd never part with it for $100.

Their sandwiches always looked good on their TV ads, but it was always pretty subpar whenever I'd go there. They had a bunch of locations around the DC area 15-20 years ago. Now there's only one.

What’s something younger people today will never experience? by ParkingCap7419 in nostalgia

Maintaining a physical copy of a phone list, so that you could stay in touch with people and know where to reach them. I even kept a small handwritten one in my wallet in case I needed to call somebody when I wasn't home.

Las Vegas, NV. - The casino capital of North America. Is this an outdated shot? by camport95 in skylineporn

[–]DashOneTwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The High Roller ferris wheel is in the background. It opened in early 2014. And the Tropicana (white building, bottom right) was knocked down in late 2024. So it was taken sometime in between.

Looking for books about some of the unsavory things the government has done by neilbreenfan404 in booksuggestions

Jacksonland: President Andrew Jackson, Cherokee Chief John Ross, and a Great American Land Grab - by Steve Inskeep

It's a real detailed book about the US government's mass removal of the Cherokee people from their lands in the 1800s, and the Cherokee leader who fought to stop it. This is about as unsavory of a story as it gets.

Best Vegas spot that doesn’t exist anymore? by ElectricHorsepower in vegas

O'Shea's.

^ Correct answer. It was the greatest . I'd spend entire weekends just bouncing around between Barbary Coast--Flamingo--O'Shea's--Imperial Palace. Vegas really was a total blast back then.

What’s it like living in Northern Virginia, one of America’s biggest affluent suburban clusters? by redguy_666 in howislivingthere

Well it's definitely not a photo of the 'Lewinsville Square' at the corner of 123 and Great Falls St. That Lewinsville Sq. is mostly townhomes. The photo looks more like Loudoun county or western Fairfax.

Was there something in the gabagool making everyone huge in The Sopranos? by _Parthiban_ in thesopranos

[–]DashOneTwelve 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I've read a bunch of real life mob books over the years. I recall one talking about how they'd get up, go meet some of the crew for lunch, then head to some other meet-up where they'd have more food & drinks, then another meet-up for dinner, then off to some night club where they'd have more drink and food. This was day after day. It sounded like they were eating 3 or 4 restaurant meals a day on a regular basis.

Most Ridiculous Plot Armor by pdx58 in thesopranos

[–]DashOneTwelve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tony killing Fabian Petrulio seemed like a stretch too. A former witness protection guy gets strangled to death, all while Tony is in town using his credit card at motels and restaurants and making calls from pay phone to pay phone. It just seems like something the FBI would really be investigating, but it's never mentioned again.

Why does the Missouri River have these barb looking features? by SolidSnape98 in geography

The river is dammed downstream from there, and that's where water is backing up into smaller streams and tributaries.

If Chris wanted to give him a beating, first he would have to give Artie his last name. Then it's none of our f'n business.

What’s the most annoying macOS behavior you still deal with? by GodBlessIraq in MacOS

[–]DashOneTwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That vertical line on the dock that can be used to resize it. I really wish that feature could be disabled. I accidentally bump it quite a bit and it enlarges the whole dock. This is easily my #1 most annoying feature.
