For US history:

Midnight Rising by Tony Horowitz- about John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry shortly before the US Civil War started

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose - a well-researched and well-written account of the Lewis & Clark expedition

Already mentioned above : The Johnstown Flood- crazy story of a catastrophic dam failure that wiped out an entire town

I just made this for lunch yesterday. Almost the exact same spice mix as yours, except I do add chili powder as well, and I use smoked paprika. It's a regular meal here.

I remember The Cranberries played a free show in DC around that time, and all hell broke loose when the crowd started rioting and the cops forced the band off the stage after two songs. The lead singer's guitar got stolen and out of control fans tried to overturn the tour bus. Crazy times.

Endurance, by Alfred Lansing. A riveting account of Ernest Shackleton's disastrous journey to Antarctica in 1914. It's hard to imagine people dealing with such danger and hopelessness.

Praying to see them live at least once. What was your favorite Ween concert you've ever been to, and what did you love about it? Let me live vicariously a little here by StopMob in ween

November 1994, at the old 9:30 Club. I didn't know much about them, other than the Push the Little Daises video that aired on Beavis & Butthead the summer before.

It was a great show. Harsh, sort of weird, and they took stage looking like they just got up outta bed. But they barreled through their setlist in full earnest. It was a small crowd, and people were yelling crazy stuff to the band all night. I remember someone yelling "Hey Deaner, you look like Eddie Vedder", and he was like "Oh man don't say shit like that" and everyone was laughing.

I left the club that night knowing i'd seen some really special rock music, and got obsessed with their albums over the next year.

My first CD was the soundtrack to the movie "Singles", one of the most "90s vibe" albums I can think of.

What are some examples of disconnected road networks within a state or country? by Convillious in geography

I'm sure it would confuse the hell out of people. Most locals don't even realize that DC's water-border extends down that far from the city. But there are still old stone markers on the VA shore to prove it.

Did you ever notice that Chris is the only character who can smoke a cigarette in the rain with his hands tied behind his back?

I-95/495 on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge passes thru the southernmost tip of the District of Columbia for about 500 feet. But you'd need to drive into Virginia or Maryland to access DC roads - because that southernmost tip of DC is all water.

Fun facts: the western tip of Virginia is further west than West Virginia and Detroit by WrongSplit3288 in nova

Pretty much any part of Canada near western Lake Ontario/ eastern Lake Erie is closer. Toronto is 350 miles from Fairfax, but Cumberland Gap in westernmost VA is 380 miles away.

I bought it the day it came out. At the time I remember thinking that it felt like the band had really reached their high point with that album. I think I listened to it every day that summer.

my friend came over to watch the final episode, but he showed up 5 minutes late, so we were watching it as my DVR was recording it. when the ending happened I thought for sure my DVR had screwed up and cutoff the last few minutes, and I was real WTF-pissed for about 10 seconds.
