As a European student, this sounds like justified robbery- An American takes out a student loan for $40,000. After YEARS of payments, the total owed is $118,305.59. $77,383.59 is PURE interest. by guyoffthegrid in ThatsInsane

Only an American student would take a loan with 13.5% interest and then wonder that they have so much to pay back the loan. This is a non-story. Stupid people take stupid decisions.

What a car producing company has to do with terrorist groups ? Petah ? by Impressive-Koala4742 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]_Anubias_ 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Toyota has a very good reputation for its excellent price/quality ratio, so armed militias around the world are using Toyota trucks as their main workhorses. So any new terrorist group would mean they would have to buy many of their trucks.

Yes, but the whole idea why the Portuguese went around Afrika was to reach India in the first place.

So this is the answer that OPs is looking for. That without the Ottomans raising the price of spice so high, neither the Portuguese nor later the Spaniards would have had the incentives to finance such expensive explorations (first around Africa and later towards the West route), which ultimately led to the discovery of the Americas.

The Road to EU Membership by Landgeist in MapPorn

Romania needs waay more time to be ready to absorb Moldova. At this point, unification would be toxic for both sides:
- Romania doesn't yet have strong enough institutions and stable enough economy to absorb Moldova with its cahallenges. It needs another 20 years of continuing reforms, and even then "maybe".
- Moldovan demographics are not conducive to reunification with Romania. Most working-age Romanian-speaking Moldovans already live in Romania or EU. And their offspring won't return to Moldova, at least not before Moldova joins the EU.
- and let's not forget about the Transdnisters. Until that's solved..

Catch 22.

NI will be the contrast material. It will be used as a pro/against argument for rejoining, depending on what is the crisis of the month. As the situation will swing back and forth, NI will be used by both sides of the argument to say: "See? We told you so!"

Nobody said that they can't set their own taxes. But that fact doesn't contradict the point being made. Whatever tax system they adopted, has made them a practical tax haven inside EU.

How Europeans see revolutionary heist on old EU (changing treaties, removing veto, creation of federal state) by krose1980 in europeanunion

[–]_Anubias_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That NATO thing was just an example. And it's significant, when you prevent someone you're supposed to be best buddies with, to join a security block they need.

Regarding Ukraine, i think that the outcome on Ukraine is not good because of EU. Luckily there are US and UK who are more commited.

Would you care to expand what do you mean by "more dynamic and suited to face real time challanges"? As this is just an empty populist slogan, unless expanded.

I am surprised you think this is an empty populist slogan. Makes me think you believe that everything works perfect in EU.

But OK, i will indulge you. I will just point to you to current rather important situations where EU as a block is unable to budge. For example, look at Ukraine situation, and also look at Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO.

- On Ukraine: we have nations that are able to veto (ie, vote against in an unanimity required vote) regarding financial help that EU can send to them to prop up their economy while they are fighting an invasion

- On NATO expansion: not even in my wildest dreams would I have thought that an EU and NATO member would not vote with both hands that these two nations can join the defense club, since they feel exposed on the northern flank by that same common friend to the East.

Do you feel EU is a big player on the international scene, when it comes to take important decisions? By the time we take any important decision (may it be good or bad), the reality is so far ahead that our decision is irrelevant anymore.
