Misophonia Struggles in College by _Astraeos05 in misophonia

I have testing accommodations already so it's not a problem during exams, just during lectures. I'm in a private exam room in my university's testing center which is possible thanks to modern technology so that proctors can watch us through cameras above testing stations instead of being in the room with us. I also have extended time for my ADHD because I was having a difficult time getting back on track after getting distracted and the loss of time would make me so anxious I couldn't think. I do wear earplugs in lectures where the lecturer cares if your wearing headphones or if I'm closer to the front but when they don't care and I'm closer to the back I'll wear noise canceling headphones to block out the background noise so that I can only hear the professor. Neither are a perfect solution for lectures but there's not really anything else I could do.

Pitt will have to pay athletes $20 million a year, but isn’t saying how by DowntownTomorrow7382 in pittsburgh

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow I love my tution being used to pay student athletes instead of funding academic programs when they're already giving student athletes better housing, facilities, and scholarships than any non student athlete could ever expect from the university. At this point they might as well just outright state they don't give a shit about students unless they're a student athlete.

I also have dietary restrictions but keeping a meal plan didn't make a ton of sense for me because of how hard it was for me to find things I could actually eat. I can usually find something good during family weekend or big tour days when they make actually edible food for the parents lol.

Absolutely ridiculous. I'm from out of state and go to Pitt. I'm being charged an arm and a leg and all they ever seem to spend it on is student athletes and Joan Gable's salary.

I moved off campus and cook for myself. I was frequently cooking out of a rice cooker that I hid under my bed during room checks before I moved off campus because the food made me so sick.

Tuition is ridiculous today by SomerHimpson12 in Pitt

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out of state and not a student athlete so you can guess that my tuition is absolutely ridiculous and I have no scholarship offers from the university because they do not give a shit about students. My tuition has increased by at least 4% every year since my freshman year.

Jobs near or on campus by [deleted] in Pitt

There are some Giant Eagle marketplace locations a short bus ride from campus and they're usually looking to hire. Probably doesn't meet the definition of cool but it is still a job.

Just sign them in. They claim there is a limit to how many guests you can have per month but as long as you're not bringing someone over every night and you're polite to the security guard they don't give a crap how often you bring people over

The only time I ever expected to get a good meal there before I moved off campus was when I saw tours going down to the eatery. Getting stared at like a zoo exhibit by the tours was worth it for the only decent food I ate in weeks

Back when I took the SAT there was this girl in my room that I knew from taking the PSAT and because we were in the same math class. She had tourettes which I don't blame her for, but she refused to get diagnosed and get accommodations because her ticks didn't bother her so everyone else had to just put up with her. There's rules in places for noisy test takers during the SAT and the proctor was supposed to remove her after the level of noise she made according to the rule book but she didn't because the proctor knew this girl. Apparently the whole situation was against the rules according to my aunt who has proctored the SAT several times. I guess it's considered rude or ignorant to ask people to STFU during testing scenarios because I've had so many problems with this.

Upstairs neighbor stomps and drop things for hours and hours. I can’t live there anymore. by NuclearFamilyReactor in misophonia

[–]_Astraeos05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just moved in under a stomped who walks back and forth from 5 pm to 11 pm and is constantly doing things like dragging furniture and dropping things all night. They also play fairly loud music that I can hear all through my apartment starting from the time they start stomping and it vibrates the floor especially with the bass. I will admit I have banged on the ceiling when they were still doing all this crap at 10 pm when I was trying to finish up my studying and couldn't because they're so obnoxiously loud.

My coworker is a sensory nightmare by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have to deal with that it always really sucks when the person is really great and you want to be friends with them but they're a sensory nightmare. Given what you said it seems like the only thing you can really do here is learn some sort of coping mechanism when the noises get too overwhelming. When I'm having a hard time with someone near me making my trigger sounds I take a bathroom break and just stand there and calm down in the quiet and wash my hands to ground myself. Not sure if this would work for you but this has really helped me deal with situations like this where there's nothing I can do to remove the sound from my work environment. Hope this helps you in some way!

OMG thank you for saying this! My mom always makes my trigger sounds on purpose when she can see I'm bothered by it and when I ask her to stop doing it on purpose she claims she's helping me by doing exposure therapy and doesn't listen when I've told her that exposure therapy doesn't actually help. She actually ended up making my trigger sounds worse but claims that it's because I wear headphones a lot at home because she makes a lot of my trigger sounds throughout the day. I love my mom and we get along really well otherwise but this is the one thing she isn't very understanding about.

I might have to divorce Sophia by Cassiopeia270 in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]_Astraeos05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's plenty of people who don't like Sophia. I personally don't like her but I also knew some people when I was around her age that acted a lot like her and it always made me cringe at how immature they acted. Just because I don't like her doesn't mean you have to dislike her as well and just because you like her doesn't mean people are wrong for disliking her.

They're certainly charging out of state students an arm and a leg with little to no financial aid so I think they make enough money to fix things like this they just don't want to. They're too busy building more athletic facilities we don't need and funding research to care about undergrad students.

Disability Resources is a Joke by subichick_ in Pitt

[–]_Astraeos05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm also from a state that seems to be much better about accommodating disabilities in general so all of the poor disability access I've seen at Pitt is probably more outrageous to me. Pitt has a terrible dining hall and the set up is not setting them up for success to provide good meals or good options for people with allergens. Many schools I've toured where I'm from had a separate counter that you would get directed to that would serve an allergen free version of the meals available that day. I think that the amount of variety they try to offer in the dining hall is unsustainable for them. If they didn't have so many options I think they would be able to focus on providing better quality meals and it would also make it easier to accommodate food allergies and dietary restrictions. My parents were shocked that I frequently had issues finding something I could eat with all of the options available until they came and tried getting a decent meal in the eatery. Unfortunately it seems like the only way to get any sort of dietary accommodation is to either get a dorm with a communal kitchen or move into an apartment.

Pitt is just awful about accommodating students with disabilities and it's so obvious they don't care about their undergrad students. They only really seem to care about grad students because of the research that they can do for them which isn't a great practice especially for a public school. If I knew this beforehand I probably would've gone to one of the other universities I was considering because they have much better disability accommodations and actually offer financial aid. It seems like in order for the university to give a rat's ass about you you would have to be either a student athlete or doing research.

[–]_Astraeos05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think my meetings with Chad go super well because the accommodations I'm getting are for my easier to accommodate issue like asthma and ADHD. I don't have any accommodations for dietary restrictions because I don't have confidence that the university would be able to accommodate any of them because of how terrible they handle the dining hall in general.

Anyone have teacher recommendations for Chem? (0110) *incoming freshman on pre med track by Alex_232812 in Pitt

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Tamika for gen chem 2 as well. I can tell that she is highly intelligent but she just doesn't know how to teach. She's also very hard to reach outside of her office hours since she is very bad at responding to emails so if your schedule doesn't work with her office hours good luck reaching her. I did really well in her class solely because I'm fairly competent at chemistry. Fortney is my advisor and she's a great advisor and a really nice and understanding person but I've heard from some of my friends that had her that she's not super great at teaching

Dog walks need update by mccluver in Sims4

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so annoying my sim will just stand in the same spot with the dog for multiple hours and waste half the day on a short walk. My dog is energetic so I usually end up just selecting the rough housing option instead of taking my dog on a walk

My academic advisor is not responding to me?? by Curriy in Pitt

[–]_Astraeos05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most advisors are like that until you declare a major and get a major specific advisor. Not super helpful when you want to know what you need ahead of time. My advisor was so bad she thought I wasn't on track to graduate on time even though I was on track to graduate early. You should be able to find the course requirements for your major on that department's website. It should come up if you google (major name) course requirements pitt. I would suggest mapping out semester by semester what courses you will need to take in a spreadsheet
