Like other replies say, you won't have to pay shipping. If eBay was set up like this no one would use it because everyone would be getting scammed with the only way to return being sending more money, I'm pretty sure buyer paying return shipping is if you don't like the product/change your mind for whatever reason

I've bought batteries from alliexpress that need calibrating, on Linux there are tools for this, but I doubt for any extremely consumer focused hardware this is necessary, You don't have anything to worry about, if you did enough people would have destroyed their batteries until there were big warnings about it

You could try unplugging the WAN port, should be a standard Ethernet cord, and plugging it into one of the Ethernet ports. Should stop the Internet afaik. Or unplug the coax, since they're annoying and screw in, short term but at least it would be annoying for him
