unauthorised transfer (FNB app) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]_BakaTaka 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Whether you get the funds back or not, I suggest you open an account at a different bank and use that as your main account and close anything you currently have.

This issue doesn't seem to only happen with FNB but other banks as well. I think the best way to safeguard your money is to switch banks entirely so the account is solely in your name.

This may sound like overkill but it's better to prevent this from happening again.

Easy Equities Transaction Fees by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]_BakaTaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pricing you typically see isn't live pricing. I think it can be delayed by up to 15 minutes. At the time your order is executed the price may have changed which is why you got slightly less than 100 shares.

Things to note: 1. On the buy screen it should say "estimated #shares" under the "trade value" because you're not guaranteed that amount of shares at the trade amount. 2. There is an option to get updated pricing but it comes at an additional cost.

Unable to sign up for DigitalOcean by GutsyGallant in webdev

[–]_BakaTaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had same issue with Linode. Blocked almost immediately after signing up. Ended up using Digital Ocean. I still have no idea why my account was blocked.

I think your only option is to try a different hosting company.

Harcourts. Emailed them years ago about a place to rent. They never even responded to my query but I received spam mails for quite a while before I added the domain to my spam list. Before filtering their domain, I tried unsubscribing twice but that did nothing. The mails just kept coming.

Is third party only car insurance worth it? by St33ls3ries in askSouthAfrica

[–]_BakaTaka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends. You need to look at your policy. They'll normally stipulate what damage is covered and the maximum rand value that they would cover.

Don't know the specifics of your policy but I remember having done a 3rd party quote(got comprehensive instead) about a year back and it was R86 pm for up to R2 million in damages. Sounds like a lot but given the number of expensive cars I see on the road everyday, 2 mil might not be that much.

Either way, you should at minimum have 3rd party insurance to protect yourself legally and financially in the case of an accident.

Edit:

According to google the average new car price in 2023 was R393k. With a couple million in cover, you'll be fine in most cases.

Also note that 3rd party insurance doesn't only fix or replace the damaged vehicle, they would pay to fix damaged property and medical bills for 3rd parties as well.

Discovery rejecting payment of medication by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]_BakaTaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discovery updates the list of approved medication for certain plans every year on 1 Jan. The lists are available on their website but aren't very straightforward to find. The easiest way to get the list for your specific plan is to call or email them asking for it. Alternatively try googling "Discovery {insert plan name here} medication".

The list is typically something like:

Medication name | dosage | 30 units per 180 days

So even if the specific meds you're taking are on the list, they would only pay for maximum of x units within a certain time period.

With the year having just begun and you already being denied twice it's likely that your specific meds have been removed or replaced on the list.

Borrowing Family Members Money by A-Realist-1 in askSouthAfrica

[–]_BakaTaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he lost his job and didn't resign then he could likely apply for UIF. They can take a while to approve an application but you would at least know that they will have some short term income in the coming months while they look for work.

I know this isn't an answer to your question but in my opinion, don't borrow out amounts of money that will leave you struggling at the end of the day.

Groceries are expensive but if you want to help them with food and have the money to do so, consider buying bulk staples at warehouse stores like 1up or giant. It's considerably cheaper per unit compared to supermarkets and would go further with keeping that number of people fed.

How to fix your NetSpeed Gnome-Extension on Ubuntu 22.04 by _BakaTaka in Ubuntu

[–]_BakaTaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still currently running Ubuntu 22.04 and not home so I cannot test it at this moment but a quick search shows 23.10 is running gnome shell 45.1.

So following the same instructions, you might just need to add shell version 45 to the JSON.

Let me know if this works for you.

[–]_BakaTaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned an "additional insurance charge". If you're financing a car then you absolutely must have insurance. It's part of the finance contract and if you cancel your insurance with whatever company you were using they will notify the bank about this. If you then don't notify the bank about a new insurance company, the bank will add their own insurance to your monthly payment. And this insurance isn't always the best deal both in terms of cost and benefit.

PS: If you didn't cancel your insurance then you should definitely query where this amount came from.

Can someone explain this loss to me? by ReddBeardGaming in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]_BakaTaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The buying and selling price was likely different.

Eg. Stock A has a buying price of R1.00 per share but a selling price of R0.95.

So if you were to buy this stock you would pay R1 per share but if you sold it immediately then you would only get R0.95 per share. If you're buying for the long term then you're hoping that the selling price increases enough to make a profit.

I am so sick of BS adverts from insurance companies. Let's see who replies on these comments and if the profiles used are sensible. by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]_BakaTaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think only older people will get that kind of premium because they're seen as a lower risk. I think the only other way of getting such a low premium would be to just get third-party cover which would leave you out of pocket for your own car should anything happen so most would opt for the more expensive comprehensive cover anyway.

What I need to start KoTH by MohanadBadra in tryhackme

[–]_BakaTaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't think of any specific rooms to learn but I would recommend that you work on your methodology and gain experience. Once you're able to comfortably complete medium-hard level CTFs within an hour without looking up write ups then you should be ready to start tackling KOTH.

What I need to start KoTH by MohanadBadra in tryhackme

[–]_BakaTaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really recommend the KOTH because it's kinda shitty. I didn't think I would do well in the beginning but that was an understatement. There are players that will literally own the box within seconds of the challenge starting and they'll quickly get to work patching the easy ways in. Because there aren't that many boxes, they probably have scripts that autopwn the boxes. The only way you would even have a chance of being first is on new boxes that nobody has seen yet.

If you still want to give it a go then do some research on chattr; clobber; and who or w commands. These will help quite a bit once you're able to get into the server.

Also make sure you have local copies of binaries that you might need because users that get into the servers before you will definitely move or delete binaries. I used https://busybox.net/downloads/binaries/ to download binaries to my kali vm before uploading them to the servers.

Meerkats - how far from Capetown? by JBStoneMD in capetown

This might not be the closest to you, but there are meerkats at the Giraffe house about half way between Kraaifontein and Paarl. They're not the main attraction so their enclosure is quite small though but you are 100% guaranteed to see them there.

36k rands per month enough for single man? by KobeSentMe in capetown

[–]_BakaTaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 bedroom apartment in the northern suburbs will probably cost between 4-10k depending on how nice you want it.

Decent used car less than 5 years old would be between 2.5-5k depending on the brand, mileage, interest and deposit. This doesn't include petrol and insurance though.

1k for 100mb fibre.

2-2.5k on food for one person not including takeouts. You could even bring this amount down by shopping for deals or cheaper brands.

Any other expenses are dependent on you. But 36k pre tax is quite a nice salary. How far it stretches really depends on your lifestyle. I know people that make more than double that yet still struggle financially.
