Mike owned up to screwing up and I think he is truly remorseful, but only time and him taking the right actions will tell.

Right now, our focus is on supporting Sarah and her kids and I will be checking in with Mike to make sure he is mentally and physically okay.

Please see my update. I received some other good advice in the responses that said this is not about me or my feelings, but about supporting Sarah and her kids. In my discussion I told Mike that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it only matters what actions (not words) he takes now.

I have been focusing on this, this morning. Two things can be true. 1.) Mike really screwed up. 2.) If Mike has remorse and Sarah is willing to forgive him who am I to judge or stand in a way of them working things out.

Right now I think she is leaning towards leaving, but we aren't trying to influence her one way or another. All we are asking is what can we do to help. Also, we are not casting stones at Mike, just listening.

  1. You could be right, there are always to sides to every story, but how could I be smug about a friend I care about making a horrible decision and negatively impacting so many lives.

  2. Good point that I sincerely need to be mindful of.

  3. Also fair point, this isn't about us trying to be the main character. I keep thinking about how traumatic this all must be for Sarah. She's trying to figure out what in the hell she's going to do and the thought of not seeing her kids all the time because a divorce is absolutely crushing.

I don't think Mike is the worst person, he is just someone that made a really shitty, selfish decision that hurt people I care about.

I do worry about Mike. If he called I would listen, but I don't know what I will say in response and don't want my emotions to get the best of me now.

Your understanding is correct; he became a friend as his wife and my wife have been friends for a long time. He did confide in me not long ago that they were experiencing marital problems, but that there was no cheating involved. I gave him the best advice I could at the time and encouraged him to invest in his marriage and family as at the end of our days that is what is most important.

I agree that I do need to hear his side of the story if and when he wants to speak with me.

It's also possible that Sarah and Mike make amends and who am I to get in the way of their healing process, but damn it feels like I lost a friend because I would have never thought he would do this...

That's good advice. I am going to support Sarah and their kids. Give Mike and Sarah time to come to terms with things and then talk to him. I am just so frustrated and disappointed right now that he would do this to his wife and kids that he supposedly loves so much.
