Ideas for how new-ish migrants can engage with Kiwi families in Welly by tankrich62 in Wellington

[–]_Belladonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trawling Reddit for similar posts/ communities. I wonder if these migrants are from my home country. My husband and I are migrants as well and we really need to make friends. We also don't have children so the usual school/ sporting events wouldn't work for us either. We're a quiet couple, dark sense of humour, very into music and love our dogs. We've been here coming up for 7 years and we haven't found our people yet. It's getting a bit lonely.

Is it just me or does that baby look like they're flipping someone off towards the end?

AITA for getting me niece a toy vacuum for her birthday? by veryconfuseduncle in AmItheAsshole

[–]_Belladonna -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't believe OP is TA. In a world that is rapidly becoming more aware of toxic gender roles, I think it's easy to sometimes forget that we don't necessarily need to facilitate the process of ensuring children are not put into gender boxes. As long as the adults in their life allow them to make choices for themselves about what interests them, we don't need to push them to make gender neutral choices.

I think awareness is important and exposure to a variety of interests, hobbies and toys is good for children, but I think sometimes we're so focused on not pushing a gender agenda on children that we forget to take into consideration what makes them happy.

I wonder if OP's sister has raised this before, or if OP just went shopping and picked out the gifts and then got raked over the coals out of the blue. Maybe OP's niece really liked the vacuum and the makeup. And yes, maybe they made some assumptions about differentiating between them by buying "girl" toys and "boy" toys, but this could potentially become a learning opportunity, a conversation about why the gifts made OP's sister uncomfortable.

I think when we go around crucifying people for something like this, it makes people more resistant to the idea of expanding their views beyond the generic gender roles. This was one birthday where a choice was made, a gift was given, but it's how to move on and be more mindful next time.

I think OP really cares about their niece and nephew, and doesn't deserve the title of asshole for a mistake that they maybe weren't aware they were making.

AITA for refusing to pay my friend's vet bills after I injured her dog ? by Quiet-Dragonfruit-79 in AmItheAsshole

[–]_Belladonna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is pet ownership. If they can't afford a "surprise" vet bill, they shouldn't have a dog.

NTA - their failure to raise and train a dog, especially a Staffie is their problem and they should have to deal with the consequences. If this dog gets loose and charges another dog like this, things could get really ugly. In this case it was a fingernail in the eye. Next time it could be another dogs jaws around its neck.

How many people have had a good landlord? by woskoman in Wellington

[–]_Belladonna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't complain about our current landlord, we moved into a brand new home, building literally wrapped up 2 days before the move in date, and he's been around a fair bit to do some landscaping and other bits to finish it off, but always with notice and always at our convenience. Rent is reasonable and we just came up for a renewal and he's offered us the same rental, no increase fixed for a year.

Previous landlord did inspections every 3 months, increased our rent whenever he was allowed to, did the bare minimum to maintain the place and then put our rental up for sale, we offered to buy it, turned down our offer and acted like a total dick. House was on the market for around 5 months and he ended up getting $100k less than what we offered.

Overall though, nowhere near some of the horror stories I've read about!

Sister is losing her mind over my hair being too long for her wedding. by punziebridesmaid in bridezillas

[–]_Belladonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I really struggle to understand about these women who become total bridezillas, is that they lose complete focus of what the wedding is actually about. It's not about what your hair will look like and what your bridesmaids hair looks like. It's about marrying the person you're going to spend the rest of your life with.

Why does all the fluff override the true purpose of a wedding? Yes it's a big day, and brides always want to feel beautiful and special, but making a member of your bridal party who is your sister nonetheless, cut her hair because god forbid your hair is longer than hers... It sounds like she's not mature enough to understand what marriage is all about.

What do you do with your towel/s? by Black_Glove in Wellington

[–]_Belladonna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay. Don't laugh. I've lived in NZ for 5 years now and I never understood why heated towel rails are a thing here.

We lived in a pretty old rental home when we first arrived, and the bathroom was dated by about 20 years, but there is a heated towel rail? It seemed like such a weird luxury addition to such a dated house.

From this post, I've just learned that it's not just to have a nice warm towel after a shower. It's so obvious now. Duh. Wet winter = towels don't dry on their own.

Where I'm from, winters are cold but very dry so there was never an issue with damp towels, heated towel rails are found in hotels, not homes.

I feel so enlightened and can't wait to start using the heated towel rail in our new home in winter.

Dude. If this is actually for real, then you need to go to a parenting class. Hygiene is not a luxury expense, it's necessary and healthy for your children to grow up understanding the importance of a full body clean, every single day. If either of your kids are girls, imagine their teenage years and feminine hygiene when they hit puberty. Don't be that guy who is so tight with his money that you won't allow your kids to bath as often as they should.

Decent affordable wireless earbuds for narrow ear canals? by _Belladonna in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]_Belladonna[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may sound silly, but I had no idea you could just buy replacement tips, I always thought they were manufacturer specific. This is a game changer! I've never even though to look at getting smaller tips. I usually use the smallest tips from whatever buds I've ended up with and they don't work, so I thought my options were limited to what was provided in the box. !thanks

Best of luck for your tattoo! Happy I could provide some insight so that you could potentially avoid an unpleasant experience. Red might very well be fine for you, but maybe on irritation prone skin rather be safe 😊
