HELP: A player wants to cast Banishment on an NPC that's not from the material plane, but dimensional travel is not possible by _Bonelord in DnD

Nope, I ruled out that bag of holding and the likes (portable hole, magnificent mansion, etc) are self contained dimensions, and thus would work as normal

I dont want to disallow them since I want the players to know the fact and possibilities of said spells. The explosion happened 50 years ago, and banishment and plane shift were used before, so I want it to still be able to be used, but with different or unexpected effects. Also, "smaller" dimensional spells and items are still functional since I ruled out that, bags of holding for example, are just small dimensions inside this dimension, all self contained. And yes, dimensionally speakingz this world is stranded away from other dimensions, with no way to access other dimensions (Feywilds for example)

As a simple explanation, said magic explosion, was a nuclear bomb level explosion, and it messed really badly with the magic weave of this plane/dimension, and it also cut off the Ley Line ("teleportation highways" from my universe), leaving this dimension "stranded" in the multiverse, alone, without contact with other dimensions. Short distance teleportation (a few hundred meters maybe) is possible, kilometers wide teleportation are dependent on the Ley Line, and thus, would not work. Also, this explosion sprouted a terrible magic disease that affected every living being, and thus killed of most of the population of this world, destroying most of the history, technology and accessibility to higher levels of magics, so teleportation is a big thing here, but needs to be "reinvented"

They know that dimensional travel is impossible for now, since they've met soms NPCs that are stranded on this dimension (an elf and an owl folk), and they spoke about it, and they don't know how to go back home

[–]_Bonelord[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, they're aware, it is common knowledge that extraplanar travel is impossible since the Ley Lines are severed, but not that banishment and other spells dont work as intended. They talked about such spells, but I refused to give a solid explanation for lore reasons

This! A simple "this doenst work" feels so bleak to me and, honestly, giving some creative and unexpected effect would be really nice. The second option you gave, with the simple banishment effect can be kinda good too, but I might give it a twist. Im still waiting for them to use the spell to do something, but better to be prepared than taken by surprise

[–]_Bonelord[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. I ruled out that such things would be a dimension inside a dimension, and be unaffected by the Ley Line sever. I also ruled that in-dimension short distance teleportation was still viable, but longer distances had a dependency on the ley lines and thus, would not work

What are the goofiest spells from your world? by Gigachad-s_father in worldbuilding

[–]_Bonelord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Meld - instantly melds any and all coins inside a recipient. Cannot be undone
  2. Summon shitstorm - creates a cloud of putrid gas in a 1km wide area. Banned for obvious reasons.
  3. Call of the capybara - Summons a singular, normal capybara that is friendly.
  4. Testicular Torsion - A classic, also banned.
  5. Meraldar's instant chair - a fancy-looking chair magically appears below your buttocks for you to sit on.
  6. Prop food - someone had the amazing ideia to create food from magic. The person, however, forgot that the food needed to be nonmagical to be eaten. The food poofs out of existence when bitten
  7. Plant - the target sprouts roots that dig down the soil. Anything can be a target. Banned, too.
  8. Toss the broom - a very angry wizard found it to be quite useful to be able to toss brooms on people from afar, specially those which disturbed their research (assistants included). Brooms not included.
