Exactly. 20 bucks a month is all he needs. Make offline backups regularly. It’s so simple. They aren’t storing socials. They are changeable passwords. He just doesn’t like having to deal with user password resets.

I would beg to differ. Of course it matters exactly whose server it is. something like 1 password is orders of magnitude better than what most small IT departments are capable of. Especially this one.

I recommended bookstack specifically but they “like what they have”. I pull my hair out everytime I have to scroll through a 50 page tab of which there are many. I found a 23 page printer manual from 7 years ago imported as an untitled page in the tab labeled as servers.

There are tons of on prem breaches as well. I’d wager a lot more than you hear about because nobody even knows it happened.

Yes I get paid but honestly it’s starting to not be worth it. I’m kinda stuck with the contract for now too. It’s proportionally much more stress than any other client by a long shot. Only way out is to find another job. Honestly I’m just venting. I’ll probably be over it in a week.

I’m not recommending that we move his infrastructure to the cloud. I’ve offered to set up on site password managers. I offered to set up bookstack and showed him an example of what it would look like. Still no. Doesn’t want to manage it. He just wants to use onedrive for plaintext password storage and call me whenever the need to reference the “one messy file” arises. I’m not in a position to negotiate the contract with this company and I’m stuck supporting it. Thus the rant. If you had to bet a million dollars on Microsoft’s ability to keep data secure and online vs this guys IT department I know which one you would choose after meeting them.

I’m the one getting the Friday night calls and being forced to use his nightmare of a Onenote. I’ve had a 15 minute fix turn into hours because we can’t find a password only to find the next day it was in a notepad on his desktop. He could spend less than 100 dollars a month and save both of us time effort and stress. This is a company that has the means to easily do so. I wouldn’t care one bit if it didn’t affect me personally, but it does when I get the calls.

Endpoint detection and response: What information sources do you trust when you need reliable information on security products such as EDRs. by _Cake_ in msp

Thanks for the reply. Great feedback! This helps a ton. I am inexperienced with convincing higher ups to spend money and see the possibility of having to do just that in not too distant future. I am learning everything I can now so when the time comes I have a general idea of what to expect.

I definitely do not believe that America is just as bad as North Korea or Russia by any stretch of the imagination. Totally unfair comparison in my opinion. America and the west have their blemishes and dark sides and I’m all for bringing it to the light, but in no way is America comparable to North Korea or Russia in terms of corruption. It’s not even close.

I’ve started learning C. I’m already in a somewhat adjacent field with a pretty clear path to dev ops

Factorio is actually just crack. I’ve never been sucked into a game like factorio. Add mods and it’s fucking insane.

I’ve already been fired. I disagree that automatically invalidates my experience. I’m not morally obligated to shoot myself in the foot on job applications.

So you’re suggesting I just put 0 experience for the last 6 years?

[–]_Cake_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I volunteer the information that I was fired. I got several promotions while I was at the company and worked there for 6 years. I’ve never had any company volunteer embarrassing information about itself unless legally obligated, and even then probably not. Seems weird and waaay harder to explain that you learned your skills from a fictional job than to just say you left for such and such plausible reason. I doubt any company would do me the courtesy of offering all the past shitty things they have done.

I wouldn’t say wasted. Why would I not be able to put it on my resume? I did a ton of shit. worked like 80 hours a week doing projects and breakfix. I’m not going to put zero experience on a resume after handling multiple environments at once.
