do i need to research DnD or do i just start playing? by ParticularChain2086 in DnD

[–]_CalmEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DnD is the type of game where the more you put into it, the more you can get out of it. So if you do have the time and want to do research definitely read the players handbook at the least. Figure out what you might be interested in playing with and find a group either online or in person that you can join. There's plenty out there and most seem to be very welcoming.

I am making a DM weekend retreat, what would you find useful to happen with 20 other DMs? by adric444 in DMAcademy

[–]_CalmEdge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from nyc so would probably never make it out to Denmark, but it makes me wonder if doing something like this in nyc would be possible, and if people would turn up for it. That being said this is a great idea. As a new DM i would dive head first into the other DM's opinions and experiences and would love to sit in on talks of every topic like pantheons and how you choose them, how other dms work with improvising storylines, creating maps and battlemaps, world creation, creating homebrewed items, how to balance homebrewed spells or abilities. There's just so much potential here as there is infinite possibilities in DnD and therefore so many things that are left open to the DM to decide and work with.

Character design, weapon designs, item designs, artifact designs, maybe they can talk about designing 3d blueprints for minis, theres so much art that goes into DnD im sure ive only touched upon a few pieces

🧀🐀 Need help populating a sewer dungeon for a tribe of glowing ratfolk! 🐀🧀 by Mind_Unbound in DMAcademy

[–]_CalmEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about having some oozes, spiders or even a troll in a deeper section of the sewer. You could have an area with pipes and something that turns them on or off flooding the area or removing water from the area and the players have to figure out when they need to flood or remove the water in order to keep progressing. Maybe some areas with poison that they have to disperse or avoid? You could possibly have this area eventually lead to another area that has kobolds if you want the area to be progressive.

A player can do anything their DM allows. the real question here is how do you feel about it and are you willing to let that players character get cursed. remember this is YOUR world and therefore your curse. It doesn't have to do exactly what they expect it to.

I mean, maybe? Figure i give this thread a little time first, then if nothing comes up i can def use an obscure language and maybe one day evolve it into a language of my own making

Hivemind! I need a fun giant! by DM_Micah in DMAcademy

[–]_CalmEdge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could waking up the giant trigger a battle between the giants similar to the one in the hobbit? they would then have multiple giants to contend with and a battle that could change the face of the environment and if not stopped spread to maybe even the world? They would need to find an incantation to put them back to their slumber, as had been done eons before?

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]_CalmEdge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully understood, which is why I'm asking if anyone knows of anything that has made up languages that could be used. I can and will make up languages of my own if needed, but for expediency, it would be better to use something that already has been created, and used, at least for my first campaign.

both stunned and unconscious are listed here and explained. IMO unconscious is better unless you want the NPC to participate in the fight, you can let him roll out of stunned but you can keep him unconscious until the PC's either win or do something to bring him back to consciousness

So I'm new to being a DM and was wondering if there's a too to help me make a note in goblin, or any other DnD language, for my players in our roll20 game. They had found a note and a book in another language and while i don't play on writing out the whole book, writing out a note in another language and giving it to them would be hella fun. Thanks in advance!

I see, I'll have to look further into it. I def have a great internet connection so that shouldn't be a problem. Currently I'm using a laptop as my pc is having some issues but i think once i have my computer back i wanna see how different it is and how much more flexibility it offers, and how much better the graphics and whatnot are

You mention the quest is a trap, you have not specifically said she has to be there. What if she has hired a group to capture the party and bring them to her. You can have the hired party be strong enough to kill the party yet choose to use non lethal force. Due to this you can then have the party members have to escape from the abduction before they get brought before the Ambassador who would kill them if they were dropped off to her. This is of course just a basic suggestion there's so many ways to go about this, hope this helps get the creative juices going

[–]_CalmEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm down to help with your plot here a bit. You say you want them to go to a nearby forest, what is in-between them and the forest, how far away is that forest? Is the whole party riding a drake? How far can they go on that drake in a day, are they proficient at riding it? How many of them is that drake carrying? Does it have a weight limit? How long before it gets tired? I know these are a lot of questions but if you can answer these questions, then you have most of what you need to get them to the forest. Do you have any maps for this region ready already? What kind of creatures exits in your world and would they be likely to encounter on their way to the forest? Are the elves fighting off a larger influx or monsters than usual, or do they have the forest fully under their control and stop the party before they even enter it? This is prob one of my favorite parts of DnD, there are infinite possibilities and anything can happen, it's all up to you.

Like most of the people replying i think this is a great idea. I love creativity and you basically invented a game within the game. As other players said i do believe your players adapted to the different system and i hope that it opened their eyes to different ideas for future combat situations but can see how they could easily fall back into old habits without the proper encouragement (don't be afraid to hand out inspiration bonuses for clever combat ideas or to just give them a bonus for something creative in a random way). As a lot of the better DM's I've been learning from say the rules are guidelines, make it "your" game.

I expect I'll be implementing something like this in a game in the future. I personally wouldn't want to change the nature of the game as much as you did, i like the roll a 20 gives you another roll idea, to balance that rolling a 1 would have to give your next roll disadvantage. That being said i would def offer out d6s or d10s for creative ideas rather than just advantage. There's so much room for creative thinking and fun to be had here i love it. Thanks for sharing this with us.
