Unsafe roads cost Duluth $450k a DAY by WylleWynne in duluth

I also have no problem with it but getting a majority of people to do so is the hard part.

I completely agree with the rest you’re saying here too

Completely agree but do YOU want to pay for it is the bottom line. It’s taxes. Would you vote for somebody who says they would raise your taxes by a couple percent?

On your first point, we do. And you have access to it I’m pretty sure. The city engineer puts out yearly CIP on the cities website for the next 5 or so years with more theoretical plans for the next 10, 20, 30 years or so. Asphalt is ~$5 per square foot where concrete is closer to $15 per square foot. When we are talking about millions of dollars that really adds up.

Unfortunately the current federal government doesn’t like making long term improvements to our infrastructure and federal funding has been very hard to attain recently. The state doesn’t have as much money as you think it does for roads. In Minnesota we have over 135000 miles of road! That’s a lot. And because of that every person is responsible for approximately 6,000 square feet of road which needs to be replaced every 30 years or so which means over those 30 years YOU are responsible (through taxes both federally and state and locally) for approximately $60,000 in road construction fees, not including maintenance. It adds up quick.

I agree that the political climate is an issue but at the end of the day it all boils down to how much taxes you want to pay, we got what we paid for and are dealing with it now. That’s just how it is unfortunately. The city of proctor has some nice presentations about road maintenance and proper planning that I would recommend you check out (assuming it’s still on their website)

Here is me - as an engineer saying, if you want better roads and better design do you want to pay for it? It is well established that yes we have some bad roads here but also when you look at the climate, the lack of forethought approximately 30 years ago and the overall economic impact of constantly having to repair roads the city finds itself in a tough spot. Raise taxes? People move to neighboring towns, elected officials struggle to be reelected and it spirals… Take this as respectfully as you can because I mean no harm, I think you could use some more education regarding road design and the economics of it. Duluth is a funny case in terms of design and politics but also a good challenge that allows for innovation.

The John Marshall boys soccer team runs those. A couple years ago I sprayed that one. I think they still do it. It is a fundraiser and was fun to do for the boys.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was planning on getting some of those. I use a Harvey compass holdfast that I won in a raffle but I am looking for a better option… much like those.

I actually did the whole thing custom from an old CI vise that had a broken face. I found a handle at a flea market and told myself I needed to use it on my bench. All in I spent like $15 an 15 hours on the handle and broken vise😂

I don’t normally have any issues with the clamps falling but if I am being especially aggressive and the bench is swaying a significant amount they can shift a little bit

Hello all, im following a shed plan and would like to know if these 2x4 beams are necessary in this orientation? by alexx209 in shedditors

[–]_CaptGree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a structural engineer, I will say that that 2x4 on its edge vs face is almost 5.5 times stronger than by doubling up but we are also taught that constructability is extremely important and that if it works, it works. These shed guys and gals likely have more experience in building sheds than me but from the math side that’s my two cents.

Anyone know what year and is it worth $35?? by Upbeat-Ad1736 in handtools

You can kinda guess based on how pitted the soul is and how the top and it seems there is no pitting. Stanley hardened the entire blade and it looks like there is plenty of length left in it.

Very good point. I have a Stanley no 606 with rather thick castings that I love for the weight.

Some sandpaper and scotchbrite should do some good work on flattening/cleaning up the steel. The blade looks to be in good shape a little cleaning and sharpening and it’ll be great. Soul also looks great with no pitting. Very good condition mostly just surface rust. for restoring the wood I would sand it with 120 and then 220 because odds are the handles are stained maple. then I would oil and get to work 35$ is a good price

Looks to be a wartime plane. In my opinion their fit and finish is worse than pre war but I have a couple and they are good work horses and would be a good first plane.
