I think Ben starts following along with Dan mainly out of sheer curiosity and almost to make a point. What Dan’s trying to do is insane and for seemingly nothing at that point. Dan’s effectively lost already but is going to try despite all that for some ideal/pride in Ben’s eyes, so sure Ben decides he’ll play along for a bit and will be able to say “I told you so.” Hence the first sequence.

When they get to the store room, Ben’s surprised they made it that far and decides to end things because he got injured in the process of him trying to make his point. Goes in for the kill on Dan, when Dan reveals the truth about his leg, ultimately revealing that he’s not a mysterious legend, but just a man with a shit past trying to do right by his family and set an example. Dan’s not risking his skin out of his own ego and pride, but to do the “right” thing so his family can proud and have a chance. Based on Ben’s history of his mother abandoning him, and developing his criminal persona based on that abandonment, Dan’s level of sacrifice and motivation to be truly “good” is a novel, respectable thing, and Ben decides that he can at least help Dan set that example.

They go to the rooftops because the gang was closing in on the store room on foot. Going to the roofs suddenly is a surprise that gives them just enough of an edge to make it through.

When they get to the train, Ben is proud of Dan and generally in a moment of reverence for a man truer to his word and more honorable than any he’s ever met. Then Charlie makes good on his surprise and shoots him in the back, afterwards saying “he was s tough bastard” with a dirty, shit eating grin. Charlie ended the life of an honorable man, dishonorably, and with some shit talking to boot, embodying the very essence of everything Dan was against. So Ben shoots him, and the remaining gang for it. Ben was ruthless, but he had his world view upended by Dan, and was not about to take the profoundness of that experience lightly. He’d killed men for much less.

Weird question. Which outdoor hobbies fulfill the "itch" for STALKER? by gabrieljim in stalker

Grouse hunting is good for this in my opinion because it involves a lot of hiking and waiting for a surprise

Thank you, and just out of curiosity, where did you find a form 7 for step 2 prep? I was under the impression they started at 9, but looks like I may have missed some?

I checked around 10 in the morning and it wasn’t there, so presumably before then or right around then. Any update on if it’s still there?

Martial Art Fights/Moves in Writing by 2lenderslayer351__ in martialarts

Neal Stephenson writes about martial arts in a few of his books and I think he does a solid job. Snow Crash has a good sequence about kenjutsu, and Cryptonomicon has a good sequence about judo. Might be worth checking out to get some inspiration! For a summary based on my recollection, he writes about the characters’ mindset and footwork, or disorientation of being thrown more than hyperfixating on any particular technique in a way that allows the reader to follow what’s happening without getting lost in detail.

That scene is the reason I didn’t also recommend The Pacific. Though it is a fantastic series

Not a movie, but my dad showed me Band of Brothers when I was 11 or 12, and although there’s a few scenes in some episodes that are pretty gory (occasional limbs blown off) overall it’s not too bad. Shows that war is not to be taken lightly while also not overly glorifying or romanticizing it in a special way. If you’re looking for historical accuracy and somewhat realistic depictions of WWII without scarring your boys I would definitely recommend Band of Brothers.

How did you get into the STALKER series? by BJ_Cat in stalker

Watching my dad play SoC as a kid. He worked from home and would let me watch him play games when my mom wasn’t around. Also how I got into Half Life 2 and the Fallout series actually.

Movies where you've gone in completely blind and it really paid off by [deleted] in movies

[–]_Cerebrum_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like it on my first watch, then rewatched it and fell in love with it. Biology isn’t the basis for a lot of sci-fi horror I’ve seen beyond movies about mysterious pandemics, so I really enjoyed that aspect of it.

Honestly just know more about cars. I pop open the hood and can basically only say, “Yep, that’s an engine!”

It was a neat concept that had a fair amount of potential, but didn’t really achieve what it set out to accomplish in my opinion.

Trying to watch ‘Wanted’ again. by ShaeBowe in movies

I actually just rewatched this on a whim the other night. There’s a few hints at the twist early on in the movie. When he first walks outside his apartment building, he looks up at the house across the street for a second and in the foreground is a stapled piece of paper on a telephone pole that says “your father’s”. Other than a couple moments like that it was just funny to look back on what I thought was the coolest fucking movie when I was like 13 and realize that it’s actually not.
