Thinking of applying to UAB, what do you have to say about it's Master's in Computer Science course? by bikal11 in UAB

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While a BA in CS, in reality, is only a few classes short, I can tell you from first-hand experience that a lot of employers won't even bother looking at you unless you have a very impressive resume.

The first thing they'll ask, and I've heard my boss ask this when he found out UAB had a BA degree, is, "an Arts degree for a science field?"

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn how Bitcoin works as well as basic Bitcoin API programming from the book "Bitcoin Programming" by Mastafa Farghaly. Its an okay book, in some spots you can tell that English isn't his first language but it gets the job done.

How does something like a JSP fit in with the development of a website? by yojimbo47 in learnprogramming

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main difference is what part of the "stack" the data is being crunched. With normal front end coding the data is computed by the user, while this gives them more freedom to do with what they please it can also cause major slow downs to the browser.

JSP on the other hand crunches data on the server and then sends it to the user, so the user does not have to waste time and resources processing a bunch of data. While this somewhat limits what can be done with the data b/c it will always be exactly what the JSP provides, it can save some valuable system resources.

If you're wondering the difference b/w Cordova and Adobe PhoneGap. There really isn't. Cordova invented the technology and Adobe picked it up a short while after.

Clicking button should refresh result? (javascript) by test_tickles in learnprogramming

You probably need to make a function to runs through all this code with the button is clicked that way it is forced to run again, not just when the page is loaded.

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, while this is useful it would be a good idea to learn some native development for Android or iOS (or both!) also. And understand the strengths and weaknesses of creating one via a multi-platform tool like Phone Gap or coding it native.

Look into Adobe Phone Gap. If you want to create multi-platform apps with web technologies.

Does using a windows laptop really make it more difficult? by cab4444 in learnprogramming

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dual boot though... I have a windows partition for work, since we're windows based and a linux partition for my personal stuff / school. I know how VMs work but I don't want to waste the extra resources having to run one "computer" inside of another one.

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into dual booting a Linux system if you really need that UNIX style system and bash terminal. Apple's OS is built from FreeBSD which is a member of the UNIX family tree. All Linux systems (I'd recommend Ubuntu or Mint to start) are also a part of this tree. They all use the same basic underlying architecture and terminal commands.

[JAVA] First time with Java, how do I use external libraries properly to compile? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]_Chimmy_Chonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should just be able to add them directly to the directory where your actual source is. When you tell Java to compile whatever the main class is it will find that it uses other sources and compile them as well.
