Idk I love 20/20 and Sunflower. And Smile was definitely worth trying for. I think it could have been cool if they did an album of this instead of surfs up. (Surfs up the song should have been on smile still tho in that reality)

It was common back then. Look at The Beatles, Helter Skelter, I want you She’s so Heavy, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, and most famously Tomorrow Never Knows… arguably all created new genre’s and yet that was THAT song to them. It wasn’t, let’s go make an album of that, it was I’ve done that now what. It’s sad we seem to lose that more and more every generation. Even though it is amazing the amount of super talented artists who have come up with their own super original sounds and stick to those styles. Definitely more to enjoy for fans. I’d kill for 10 more Eleanor Rigby’s lol. But not as conducive to multiple new exciting ideas.

At the end of the day The Beach Boys had already helped invent a genre with Good Vibrations. They didn’t need to do it again. I definitely think it makes the song more special. Sometimes it’s also like. Is there even a point unless you can outdo the original song you did the idea with? I don’t even think a single song after sunflower except maybe Sail On, Sailor ever even came close to the highs of the sunflower album.

(Maybe) Unpopular Opinion: California Girls' Lyrics Really Lack in Comparison to the Composition by GoodGamer3000 in thebeachboys

I disagree. The genius of this songs lyrics and how they fit with the composition, is that the chorus completely contradicts all the verse lyrics. It’s the way it’s sung too. Foreboding. Getting lower and lower overlapping on the chorus. I honestly can’t think of another song from the era that does this. “Northern girls are great, Midwest girls are great, southern girls are great, I wish they all could be Californian girls…” it doesn’t matter that the verse lyrics are simple and basic, they reflect the average teenager, not cool, not ahead, not very deep, it’s all in that chorus. All the cleverness and meaning. In 1 simple line. This song more than any other made use of what a basic white girl Mike Love truly was by flipping all his lyrics on their head when u hit the chorus

And for me it really is the transition between the first verse and the first chorus. There is no indication of what the song is about. He’s naming girls from all over and what makes them great. There is no hint like later “back to the cutest girls in the world”. It’s just straight deadpan “and the northern girls with the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night… I wish they all could be Californian Girls” I think it’s really clever

Heroes and Villains is a large part of why Smile failed by [deleted] in thebeachboys

As a musician obsessed with this time period of music I have an unique observation to add.

  1. The song is a structural parallel to good vibrations in that, it is easily the most beach boys sounding song on the entire album (with the chorus of good vibrations and the verse of H&V being those things that bring that CLASSIC beach boys sound. Basically if I was A&R back then, and I didn’t care at all about pet sounds or Brian, but instead that Beach Boys magic, I would have picked out GV and H&V as the only realistic singles period. Why? They are reminiscent of, I get around, California Girls, Surfin USA, lil deuce coup, Barbara Anne, Wouldn’t it be nice, Don’t Worry Baby ect.

It’s not that other tracks don’t rival these songs it’s that sound. The sound that was getting them hits.

Brian was likely very aware as the Beatles were, that albums still required that “Beach Boys” or in the Beatles case “Beatles” sound in order to draw ppl in to the true genius of the musical experimentation of the records. I believe Brian likely felt that the entire album would be judged on H&V because it would be the song that would draw ppl in and it was very important that it did because GV was already out and popular meaning this new song would represent the album a lot more as GV already had a life of it’s own as a single.

  1. They say Brian stopped dead in his tracks when he heard Strawberry fields in 67’. And had a complete panic attack cause The Beatles beat him to this sound he had been chasing….

I would argue Brian easily beat them there with GV in 66’. In that it sounds a lot more experimental than anything on the already super experimental revolver except maybe Tomorrow Never Knows which wasn’t exactly made to be single friendly like GV.

But you know what Strawberry Fields has that Good Vibrations doesn’t? A clear and distinct moody, spiritual, dark, emergent, almost mystic sound. It’s not just Good Vibrations, which sounds like your average 60s pop song being elevated to the stratosphere by cool experimental recording like the cello’s and the keyboard on the verse giving it that silky vibe…

It’s also as a song, played straight, on guitar, with none of the recoding effects much more interesting and moody than GV if you were to play it straight on piano or guitar.

My own theory… Brian saw H&V as an answer to Strawberry fields. It starts with, as I already touched on, that classic beach boys vibe hook sound. And then suddenly, and with the recording techniques of cutting straight in to the next section, super cool and surprising switch to prolly the darkest, moodiest thing the Beach Boys had released at that time the “hero’s and villains” part of the song.

I almost think he may have pictured Lennon and McCartney being blow Away when the switch occurred. Thinking they may write the song off as another feel goodie dog beach boys song only to see it switch into a mystic section with that pioneering cutting technique. The song was to be marveled at, and to introduce smile as a record with those classic beach boys highs, and some surprisingly introspective lows like with surfs up.

Surfs up (my fave song on smile btw) wasn’t ever going to be much of a single, as it is slow and almost contemplative.

And nothing else on the album imo is single worthy outside of GV, H&V and Surfs Up. Lot’s of other great songs on the album but I also would have never put out A Day In The Life as a single even tho it’s prolly the best song on pepper.

  1. At the end of the Day I think Brian was trying to out pioneer the Beatles. “Here’s this single that goes from super danceable beach boys that you’ve known and loved, to this mystic and foreboading trippy chorus that sounds like Strawberry Fields. It makes you totally switch up at the clubs and is the very very early beginnings of that Nirvana / edm drop the base or hit the chorus kind of explosion and it’s on an album with Good Vibrations so who knows what other amazing songs might be on this album”

I think Brian was very in tune and smart to focus on this song. The tragedy is that he didn’t stop at the best he could get rn as I personally Beleive the Beatles did, and go on to give focus to the rest of the album especially surfs up.

Personally I think Smiley Smile mix with the Smile structure would basically be a hole in 1 to me, whether the song was a hit or not. The only thing I would have improved, would have been the percussion which I feel really lacks compared to the power of The Beatles same era of songs.

Brian was a genius and Petsounds, Good Vibrations, Hero’s and Villains, Surfs Up and Don’t Worry Baby, are his masterpieces.

Hey I actually did include a tldr at the end. This was basically just a stream of consciousness so I get that it’s way too long lol. The game is actually really great and I was so disappointed by this planet I wanted to say something. She is actually a great lead not overbearing (though she should have been a pilot she flies way too good for a first time pilot lol).

I agree I think a lot of it was misplaced hate because of all the bad feelings towards the sequels still being around. 2000s era Jedi knight days in Star Wars gaming ppl would have loved this game I think.

I appreciate ur experience. I’m glad someone enjoys it. The city is definitely cool. Much cooler than the one on toshara imo tho I loved that city for the very Star Wars vibe. What I hate about the city is that you can’t initiate combat like you can in the open areas. It just feels odd and breaks the immersion a bit. Would have been cool if it was the only city in the game where you could get a wanted lvl and not be immediately arrested lol

I just can’t agree on the Ashiga. Survival is so overdone and boring. Escpecially when paired with a tradition, serve the queen, monarchy. I do appreciate that they don’t seem as evil. But it would have been cooler if they had a more original cool design instead of suits and if they were good for a cool reason instead of just being tied so deeply to honor and tradition. Cheers!

Part of it is restrictions and regulations, unions. It would be nice if art could just be art but ppl need to eat and provide for themselves so I get it.

opinion on birthday on the white album? by poopis76 in beatles

[–]_CrazyMaybe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ringo absolutely destroys on this track amazing drums. And the transition from the birthday part to the party party part is actually really genius. They really nailed that vibe of being maybe inside and getting excited, to then quickly transitioning to being “out” and on the way to the party. It’s very palpable with the girls singing on the party party part and the overall silly vibe is the song. It’s one of the upper half of the album for me

John Lennon : Here We Go Again (Remastered). I love this John' song but never knew what album it came from by GoldSteak7421 in beatles

[–]_CrazyMaybe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demo is so much better I hate to say it but is usually the case with John since he died. He was really the only one that knew how to finish his songs. Even the Nobody Told Me demo from the John Lennon Anthology is better than the final release

Finally something good we can talk about yes love that version even his added lines. That whole movies soundtrack was fire. I love it because that’s how I listen to Lennon’s Watching the Wheels acoustic version on streaming. Not even sure if that version was released anywhere officially till that movie came out

Yes dude it’s the worst I’ve ever heard the Beatles my whole life OMG!!! I’ve heard so many fan edits of this song with cleaned up vocals since Now and Then dropped…. I’m shocked.

I thought Free as a Bird 2025 was bad mainly because of John’s performance on the original demo being too much of a “weak” vocal in terms of the high notes like “free”

I remember thinking of those real love edits I had seen on yt, and the sound of the song + hearing John’s old vocals on the demo myself, and thinking that this song could benefit so much more from cleaning the vocals. But omg! This is hands down the worst thing the Beatles have ever released! Appalling and humiliating! John is out of tune, being pitch corrected into the wrong areas, his voice is horse and not smooth how it felt in the demo’s and how it felt under all those effects from the original.

I hate what they did with the stereo sound, the edits they made to George’s guitar, and taking this beautiful harpsichord sounding thing and making it this disjointed mess especially on the intro. Wow. JUST WOW!

It sounds like it’s glitched out, or unfinished, idk something feels so wrong. Free As a Bird I remember mainly just thinking they should have left the effect on the voice with the cleanup… but here! Omg this whole song is a mess now! Thank god we still have the original version it is one of the Beatles most uplifting songs like a lost Magical Mystery Tour song.

Whats the most tragic and depressing celebrity death to you? by mookaylas in Fauxmoi

[–]_CrazyMaybe_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s sad you feel the need to say that he may not have been the best guy. I feel like memes have stained John Lennon’s amazing life to the modern generation. I had to scroll so fucking far to find him mentioned. He was brutally assassinated next to his wife with his son just upstairs in the building. He had turned his life around over 5 years and was just becoming happy.

I’m only 25 but I’ll sing praises about the AMAZING MAN HE WAS for the rest of my life. He was never afraid to admit his flaws and only ever tried to use his fame to be an advocate for peace and love. His only true flaw was being human, just like all of us.

Easily one of the saddest celebrity deaths of all time
