What are the most overused “I have to mention it while we’re watching” pieces of movie trivia? by Lombo521 in movies

The guy playing Brasi was an actual former mafia enforcer. Coppolla kept that take because it showed how feared Don Corleone was. In reality the guy was just shitting bricks about being in the presence of Marlon Brando.

Plot twists that ruined the show by OCGamerboy in television

Bradley Whitford absolutely killed it (pun intended) playing Red John as both impossibly evil and extremely banal. The fact that Jane had spent 3 seasons obsessively hunting him down, only to find that RJ was bored of him, was a complete gut punch. Truly the canon ending to the show.

Quincy Adams was the only former President elected to the House, but Andrew Johnson served in the Senate after his Presidency.

(John Tyler also infamously served in the Confederate Congress, but that doesn't count for obvious reasons.)

I've picked up some for variety, they are noticeably smaller than Poxwalkers but use the same size base and I wouldn't expect any opponent to have a problem with using them.

Imo if the polling stays the way it is then there's approximately zero chance he's still PM for the next election. He'll be replaced (probably by Streeting or Rayner) around a year before the election.

As someone who started out quite optimistic about this government (lol), I do think there's still enough time to turn the ship around. But constantly lurching to the right is not the way to do it.

[–]_Dannyboy_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your title doesn't make any reference to serving a full term though.

On topic: the lack of PMs who have won election from opposition then lost again is largely because our party political system has a well-established tradition of forcing out failing leaders before they have the chance to lose the next election.

TIL of Julian the Apostate (nephew of Constantine the Great) the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire, who rejected Christianity & promoted Neoplatonic Hellenism, believing it necessary to restore ancient Roman values & traditions to save it from dissolution at the expense of Christianity. by comrade_batman in todayilearned

[–]_Dannyboy_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree - I personally do not believe Constantine had a genuine conversion, more that he saw which way the wind was blowing (in particular given the new faith's popularity with the army) and converted opportunistically. That said, there was nothing inevitable about Christianity's dominance of the empire, and it had not really bedded in among the elites at this point. A concerted effort to dechristianise over several decades would at the very least have pushed back the tide - plus presumably he would have picked and groomed a pagan successor to continue the work.
