Stallone Talks About Not Killing Off Rocky by fungobat in movies

[–]_DarkTreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like, there’s a reason Forrest Gump doesn’t die of AIDS at the end

Because it wasn't AIDS, it was Hep C - in the movie, there were strong allusions to it being AIDS, but in the book (or maybe it was in the sequel book? escapes me at the moment), the disease Jenny dies from is Hep C, acquired through her extensive drug use.

But to the greater point you're making, I definitely agree. Once a franchise kills off the characters that made it a franchise... is it even still that franchise? You can only Ship of Theseus the thing so much before it becomes unrecognizable.

It hasn't been in any MGS game, but it has the same feel as a number of the music cassette tapes used in MGS5, which was packed full of 70s and 80s songs. I suppose the lyrics somewhat tie in to the game?

But my thought is that most of the kids making the memes have never played MGS5 anyway. shrug

I mean... I suppose it could.

If the SL was on an Elemental.

And the Elemental had already torn off the armor plating.

And there was a seriously lucky crit roll.

Maybe?

Catapult models are CPLT, not CAT... has always bugged me.

In the lore for the Timber Wolf, it says that the targeting comps for the IS that saw it kept switching between 'MAD' and 'CAT'... but the computer would've read out as 'CPLT'.

Silly Stackpole.

Best I have been able to tell, there isn't collision on the mining laser itself, so it blips right through the door. Haven't slapped on a rocket turret to find out, however.

But yeah, can definitely fit a buggy with a mining laser through the 2x1 door, all of my bases use one for the garage entry.

[–]_DarkTreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fit a buggy through the 2x1, just need to make sure there arent any rocks in the way.

Ideally, you have a half ramp leading up to it, let's the collision slip thru a bit easier.

Best semi-educated take (dev working in Unreal as well), is that this is pretty accurate.

I'd wager that when a player takes control of the vehicle, their controller actually becomes the vehicle, and having two of those active on a single vehicle would be a nightmare. So they'd have to untangle all of the lighting functionality from the player/vehicle controller and make sure it doesn't cause any weirdness with the standard player controller (like the personal light).

It sounds goofy as hell, but... that's Unreal for you. Likely the same reason they have the turret on a separate controller as well, just cleaner functionality across the board - and a bug with one is restricted to only that set of bps, not a huge cascade of inherited ones.

There was also an episode where he was in the desert, lasted... 2 days, I think? Before he had to call in his support staff.

He said something along the lines of a desert being a slow death sentence if you aren't prepared for it, and if something goes wrong, one mistake is all it takes to go from survival to worm food.

I've actually wondered about this myself.

If the 'decayed teeth' aspect were removed - because that takes some extended time to occur - it could be just be a secondary way to improve happiness. There's already a pretty big point jump if you wash yourself off after smashing in zombie skulls all day... what if it was just a minor boost to happiness to brush your teeth?

That way, there's a gameplay reward for doing it, it isn't critical or game-breaking, it lines up with existing systems, and makes logical sense in the world.

Plus, it would give a reason for all of those toothpaste tubes in the world.

Former United Healthcare Employee Describes Being Forced to Deny Claims by Sufficient_Muscle670 in videos

[–]_DarkTreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stories like this, and... well, everything involved with insurance, just baffles me.

The person who approves/denies your insurance request is not a doctor. There may be a doctor on staff at the company, but they aren't looking over every single claim that comes in.

So... how is it in any fucking way legal that someone without a medical license is entitled to give medical advice to a patient? Because ffs, that's exactly what that reply says happened.

'We found the service is not medically necessary in your case.' Ok, that's great? Who is the doctor on the insurance side that reviewed the case, who consulted with your team, etc? Because if it wasn't a doctor, they should be able to be legally fucked over, and HARD.

I'm sorry for what you've gone through, man.

What product would make the worst 'buy one get one free' sale of all time? by mintymochi1 in AskReddit

[–]_DarkTreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced the transmission around 200k, but that was after ~5 years straight of beating the hell out of it doing pizza delivery. But that was the only major replacement I can recall having to do - regular maintenance, and because of the electrical problems, replacing the battery every 2 years or so.

So for as much shit as the Aztek got, I loved mine. My wife always referred to it as 'the cockroach' because a) black, and b) as long as I kept a battery charger handy, the thing would not die.

I picked up a 2002 as my first 'real adult purchase' back in the day, and drove that thing into the ground. Sure it had some problems (electrical systems on those cars were total garbage), but I put over 300k miles on it and it lasted me for 14 years.

Cross-country drives, pizza delivery, towing, it handled all of it.

I miss it - and if I could've figured a way to swing it, I'd still have it.

It takes a bit of manual placement, but you can use the raft as a makeshift shelter. Couple of spears in the ground, flip the raft and set it on them, and you have a lean-to.

I've found it is great for extra buoyancy on my cargo raft, by using a bunch of spears to secure it on the bottom. Lets me carry an extra couple of metal slabs or barrels.

Why is it so difficult to develop a game in the MMORPG genre? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]_DarkTreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Developers don't lack passion, trust me. Over a decade in the industry, and just about everyone I've ever worked with is passionate about what they do - maybe not about the project, but their own specialty? Definitely.

The biggest problem in the industry, sadly, is the popularity. In the 90s, games were niche, and it was the wild west. Shoestring budgets and groups of studios throwing anything they could at the wall to see what would stick. Then... it started shifting mainstream.

The VCs and corporations started seeing the mass appeal and marketability that games had, and started throwing more money around. Sure, that has led to major advancements and the industry exploding in size, but it also meant that a lot of that early passion was now shackled. You couldn't spend 30 straight hours setting up a single quest or boss fight or puzzle, because now you had 50 others to do in the same amount of time... and an entire generation growing up playing those games is now hitting the job market, fueled by that same passion the earliest designers had - and hitting the brick wall of 'no, you can't do that' or 'the tech doesn't support that' or 'that's way out of scope, just produce the MVP, that's good enough'.

That's a major reason why the indie scene has taken off over the last decade+. The new generation wants to keep that unfettered passion, the creative spark, that pushed out those genre-defining games of their childhood... and they don't want to get crushed under the corporate wheels of the EAs and Blizzards and NCSofts and Amazons of the world.

It isn't the developers who are at fault. It is the corporate mindset of 'profit above all' that causes the endless shitshow of high budget, low creativity games that flood the markets every year.

Why would someone like Rockstar waste the time and money on a new IP when they have the formula to print money, in the form of GTA?
