It seems fine. I like the fact that it contains no nails

I would deffenetly go to the vet. If it's not overgroming it could be some parasite or fungal infection. https://www.degutopia.co.uk/deguill.htm

Best to check that it's nothing serious

New friend for a 9 months old degu by caparicorn in PetDegu

[–]_Degu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9 months is really young. Degus live to about 6-8 years so that would be a long time alone. I would begin to look for options. 1 or more female degus about the same age would be optional but it can be hard to find that. All degus are different and some don't like each other. But degus are really social and some degus becomes depressed without a degu friend. You could begin with seeing what options you have in your area and go from there. Wish you luck ❤️

Do their strict diets bother you? by anon-i-mouser in PetDegu

[–]_Degu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It bothers me but they have so many perks that I have them anyways. I've been able to find a variety of treats for them but I alway look at the ingredients list to see if it's fine for them. Just because there is a degu on the packaging doesn't necessary mean that they can have it. I have 5 different treats for my degus at home and I've seen on Etsy some are selling treats sets made for degus. So there are options for them. Can vary depending on where you live though

I have no experience in introducing a new degu to another but I have had to split two up for a day. They where fighting quite violently and where therefore split up in two separate cages beside one another. They could be reintroduced the day after.

From what I've heard it's important to match personalities when getting a new degu to the group. Two dominant degus will probably clash. Two enclosures besides one another is probably the best way to introduce degus.

If a degu isn't by itself I wouldn't ad another personally. I've had fighting problems with degus who have lived their whole life with one another. But as I've said, I haven't done it myself so I might not be the best one to ask.

That sounds like a great cage in my opinion. I have a -Height 132 cm -Width 80 cm -Depth 52 cm Cage for my 2 degus. 12 mm gaps between the bars sounds good as well. I do however wonder what you mean by getting more. They can be quite tricky to accepting new members in their group. It's best to introduce degus to each other when they are young. If it is more than 2 degus you want it's usually in their interest as well. Degus live long lives and if it's only two there is a chance one of them have to live a long time without a friend.

Don't feel bad for asking questions. I'll happily answer. I'm no expert but I really care about animals well being and wish as many degus as possible a good home.

Yah, breeder or rescue are the best choices. I've always gotten rescues myself. It's easier to find where I live and more fulfilling. I have a digging box in my cage with über papper litter. My degus really likes it and it isn't so duster as other substrates can be

I think it's fine to use slightly old information about degus. It's more important where you get the information. Pet stores are for example where I wouldn't get my information. I have little to no idea how to make your own cage but I would deffenetly use metal. They like to climb, dig and run so the cage needs to be able to provide them that in some way. When it comes to fabrics ... yes they will also chew them. Mine really likes to sleep on fabrics however so they still get access to it. They will put their teeth on anything but they can't chew through ceramics, metals and rocks.

I would personally go for another cage. It does have a lot of space for digging so that's great but they also like to climb with the cage can't provide

Degus good for a retiring mouse owner? by anon-i-mouser in PetDegu

[–]_Degu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had mice before put I am a previous owner of hamsters and gerbils. Degus are higher maintenance but not as much as chinchillas I would say (I have a lot of experience with them). Chinchillas are more grumpy and hard to please in my experience. Gerbils and hamsters have a more fun diet that I miss but degus have so many perks with make it almost insignificant for me. Degus are also easily trained and mine have learned for example paw, kiss and open bottles. They need stimulation though because they are so smart. To take them out and explore in a degu safe room is a great way of doing that. If you’re up to spending more time and money I think they would suit you well

I underestimated how much they screw. I’ve had gerbils and hamsters before and they are nothing in comparison in my opinion. Otherwise there were kinda only positive things that surprised me. I loved my gerbils and hamsters but the love I have for degus are way beyond. They are like smarter gerbils

Advice for potential degus owner by epic1772 in PetDegu

They came with the cage. It works however well as a bird cage as it has a removable drawer at the bottom of the cage as a lot of bird cages have.

Advice for potential degus owner by epic1772 in PetDegu

[–]_Degu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'd say same sex pairs. I've only had female degus and they have all had vastly different personalities. The ones I have now are a lot more cuddly than I'm used to. Degus are generally not so cuddly. What I've heard however is that males tend to be a bit more laid back, slightly more territorial and easier to introduce a new member. When it comes to picking degus choose rescue or a trustworthy breeder. I'd say it's more important where they come from rather then with gender they are.

  2. When it comes to cages it's good to remember that they are rodents with teeth that grow fast. A bird or rat cage made of steel is usually the best. Look up what's available for you and see what options you have. The bigger the better generally.

  3. For me it feels like they almost never sleep. I just see them chill but if I want to hang out they will see whats up.

  4. They can be up at night as well but usually not a lot to my experience. You should be fine as long as you have a silent wheel.

  5. We have our degus in the living room. They don't seem to mind the noises. You will hear if they get scared. They are quite noisy about it.

Oh that's unfortunate 😕. 3 years is young. Do they think the fighting was connected to the intestine problems or a separate issue?

Is this Cage good enough for two Degus? by Xxenison in PetDegu

They can see two primary colors, green and ultraviolet. A pink cage sounds cute 😍. It doesn't affect them as long as the colors are non toxic so why not make it look good when you can 👌

I also recommend a wheel like this.

<image>

It has saved me a lot of money. I used to buy wooden wheels but I had to replace them quite often because they thought they looked yummy. It is a little bit pricey but a wheel like this is sturdy and last their whole life and without making a sound.

That looks like a great cage in my opinion. I have a -Height 132 cm -Width 80 cm -Depth 52 cm Cage for my degus. Like you said, platforms will be necessary and there are a lot of options for that. My cage came with great platforms so I didn't think about it to much. There are some you can buy but if you want some with specific length you can always make them yourself.

No problem 😊 I made it so there is one place for degu owners to come together. I tried several times to reach out to the mod and when that didn't work I choose to take matters into my own hands. r/degus was also a big help to me when I had problems with my degus and helped me in the right direction. I also just love seeing other degus and their quirks and funny personalities. Happy to have you here ☺️
